I LOVE your commentary about gaming. I think a lot of people in this hobby really take for granted how natural a lot of these rules and mechanics feel to people within the hobby, but outside wargames are actually a really complicated system to grasp.

That’s an excellent point actually. It’s also the same for painting in a way isn’t it? Think the way Alex explains not only how he paints certain things but he breaks down the barriers of entry for people who may be new to the hobby (or experienced but have certain nuances gained over many years).

@ivanbigazzi3 ай бұрын
@@BlizzAz On the Army builder app, the Caledonian Highlander Army is listed as "playable but out of catalog", and there are no official statements from CB about an upcoming refresh of the model range. This means that, while the army remains fully playable and has its full set of rules and profiles, some models might not be up for purchase from the Corvus Belli webstore. Yet, Infinity allows for full proxy of any model with any other model from Corvus Belli (as long as they are of the same size) so you can pick anything from Kosmoflot (the latest Ariadna sectorial army) and proxy your Caledonians, or sift through the second-hand market.

15:00 Infinity's reputation for complexity is well deserved. Code One does an excellent job to help. If there are Infinity players near you they will enthusiastically help you through the learning process by only introducing special rules in stages. Finally, if you are starting, Crimson Stone or Blackwind, the Operations Boxes, comes with 5 missions where they go from 3 standard troopers up the the full box contents while introducing more special rules each mission. If you are the person introducing the game to your area these boxes are incredible. There's also a great discord community.

I hope they’ll get more details published before October on the sparsely-mentioned fate of CodeOne going away-as someone who had just started learning with it, I’m hoping it’s mostly a rebranding/repackaging to integrate Essentials more closely with N5 rules and cards, similarly to Spearhead in the new Age of Sigmar edition (which is an ironic back-and-forth of “inspiration”! …)
@TylerProvick3 ай бұрын
@@spesterwecial codeone is a great idea which I fully support (see my failed and abandoned youtube channel for my views on it) but it had the issue of confusing people. "I want to play Infinity, does this CodeOne box work?" Also, people who played n5 didn't look at CodeOne rules and thought it was a bigger change that would require them relearning the game, so were hesitant to play codeone. So instead, the idea of stripping special rules is just going to be included in the core rules instead of a separately named product.

I actually think the only thing that gives Infinity a reputation for complexity is the bizarre insular Infinity community claiming it is complex. It really isn't. At all. In fact a lot of it seems positively quaint and dated in the modern era of skirmish wargaming. Not to say Infinity didn't introduce new cool ideas...of course it did. But I feel like it's been resting on its laurels for a long time and any complexity is simply due to poor communication and framing of an otherwise cool and unique-ish system.

Infinity is my favourite miniature wargame by far. I left 40k after discovering it. We started in a similar way with stripped down rules and slowly introduced hacking, fireteams, etc. It's a great universe and system and well worth investing some time into. The models work well with the brutalist scenery you've been building but future games will definitely need more line of sight blocking terrain. It's worth putting out that the card scenery Corvus Belli make for Infinity is great and cheap so it's not tough to fill a board
@philgee4863 ай бұрын
I genuinely really enjoy playing Infinity, I was drawn to it by the beautiful true scale scifi models that I saw online and was genuinely surprised by how uniquely great the game itself is - there is honestly nothing else like it. I'm thrilled that Alex has taken on explaining Infinity to new players, I can't think of a better guy for the job, he's an outstanding hobby thinker and matches that with an absolute gift for explaining - Corvus Belli made such good choice here. The rules are free, if you have some proxy scifi models, some buildings or other multilevel terrain (yes in extremis game boxes, piled books, kleenex boxes and rulers for bridges between, all work if you squint your eyes, most of us started out gaming this way 😉) and a table you're off. The models will draw you in to Infinity in their own right and so Corvus Belli wisely know they won't ever lose out, the rules are free for the same reason Don't be put off by the metal models either, they're of a finish quality you haven't seen before and go together easier and better than modern GW 3D puzzle kits, you can tell what an arm is without a part number and a picture. Plus with the "sprue" you get a few free paint bottle agitators lol It is a challenge to play competitively against experienced players, when you play the full game rules it's all sorts of future conflict you haven't seen before but I really enjoyed the challenge. Much more sensible is to play against another learner or just find an opponent who will play at a simplified level. Alex is 100% right that the core of those rules can be played right off and is easy to find for yourself as you read. As you love and enjoy playing the game you'll get to love the way the rules serve you in game, and you'll bring in more. Give it a go, raise it at your local FLGS, try it with a mate and then both of you can tell others what a joy it was to fight in a future that feels like the future and not medieval rules with lasers and plasma just grafted on. Great job Alex!

Phil I missed your comment in the backend jungle. I mightily enjoy them though so please never stop. I think there's a lot of misconceptions floating around in our relatively confined part of the world. All it takes is one or two folk on youtube saying "metal minis are a paint" or "games should not need more that a few pages of rules" or "custom dice a terrible" and all of a sudden half the viewers think the same thing without testing for themselves. I've enjoyed just trying to paint some Infinity and play a few games, I now know I like it and it would be very cool if more tried the same approach.
@philgee4862 ай бұрын
@@52Miniatures Alex, you know my mouth runneth over no matter what :0) Never worry that I'll be too quiet or even too concise! I couldn't agree more, I watch vids where paints are compared and Kimeras are dismissed as unuseable by folks who don't understand they're pure pigments to allow you to yourself make any paint colour you can imagine, that it would be pure coincidence if one of those pigments turned out to already be the colour they needed. Then they put GW paint at the top and I just sigh. With games it must be so hard to bear for the creators, all the folks being turned away by someone who's playing (and defending) a d6 with modifiers system that was out of date as a basis when fantasy Warhammer was new. A dice with an average roll of 3.5 and a maximum of 6 doesn't give you room for any mechanics to shape worthwhile distinctions reflecting future weapon systems, it was settled on to barely allow the difference between a shortbow and a long bow. This then has to give a host of special rules for tactics and individual models instead and that sells a library of essential rulebooks every few years. You go whilst I sit down and read your rulebook, then I'll go and you can make a phone call, really?? In 2024 and ten revisions of the rules? Infinity is a beautiful system, more sophisticated, yes! The model count stays down to offset this but still gives you all you want in play. instead of one, five or ten models a unit is one two or a scant few - but they play with much more flexibility and that sophistication. It's no Kill team, it's a full on ttg battle. Fewer models gives you a real chance to do these just plain superior figures justice with your painting. Painting them is a joy that has to be appreciated and they don't have to take an age as you've so ably show, these sculpts will help you. A lot is made of them being in metal, white metal was the material of decades ago when it was all we had, These are not that. It's forgotten that metal casting has it's own strengths in really crisp lines and details. you don't have to enlarge hands and heads for the plastic to be reliably pressured into. Moulds for metal ruin quickly and cost the manufacturer over and over again, Corvus Belli quality control keeps the consequences to a minimum impact by throwing those moulds out and grabbing the next one. All the benefit and no more clean up than most plastic, they work hard to enhance the connections so they stay glued, do buy a decent superglue or two part epoxy but then off you go with complete confidence. Infinity deserves a genuine look by everyone, not for everyone but you have to make sure or else you're likely missing the game of your life - and! cheaper as it is to create your army and own all the rules, you can still collect and paint 40k for your shelf! Ideal!

It's great that you're using terrain that's made specifically for Infinity by Ryan over at Brutal Cities. Infinity such a athematic game and having great minis, great terrain, all painted to a high standard really helps bring you into the action. The mechanics help keep it flowing it's why I've been putting for over 10 years, having hundreds of minis and over 10+ tables of terrain just for Infinity. 🤟

Infinity miniatures are fantastic to paint - they lend themselves so well to washes and contrasts, all the fine and crisp detail really doing the work catching highlights easily as well. I speedpainted soooo many of them with pretty much your approach, it's great. Fun and deep game, loved the hell out of it when I was actively playing it - but it's by no means simple! It takes a good while to pick up all the nuance, but it feels so tactical once you do. It is very demanding, however. Not exactly the type of game to kick back and chill with, you have to be constantly engaged due to the reactions system.

I still have my old infinity models, always enjoyed using them as proxies for other games (primarily as I don't have any local friends that play infinity)

I love iso for a quick clean before airbrushing. Unlike other options it dries fast so if you remembered only at the last minute (as I often do) you aren't delaying your priming. I use an old toothbrush though.

Love the models, love the paint schemes. I hear ya on the rules thing. People keep saying things like D&D 5e is really simple and streamlined, which it is compared to 3.5e or 4e from what I've heard, but having played even simpler games, I have to say that 5e is not a simple TTRPG. Likewise, I think there are some simple wargaming rules out there. Check out Mobile Frame: Zero - Rapid Attack if you ever get a chance. It's a mech wargame where you design and build your own units using a fairly simple build system and as they get damaged, they lose systems, and thus effectiveness. It was designed with using models made of Lego in mind, but it is mini agnostic. I will say it is fun to have a game end and the board be strewn with blasted bits of your units all over the place, though.

There are games out there that deserve more than Warhammer deserves.

I've always loved the look of Infinity. Reminds me of Ghost in the Shell plus Aliens. The complexity has always scared me off though. We recently picked up Cyberpunk Red Combat Zone, so maybe once we get a few games of that in I'll come back around to Infinity.
@philgee4863 ай бұрын
Ghost in the Shell 100%, you have the sense of it right there and I'd never made the connection, I love it for a bit of the sense of Altered Carbon
@redbaron6713 ай бұрын
The complexity really comes from trying to use the entire ruleset at once. Once you have the core gameplay start tacking on other things like camo units and or hacking.

Pretty wild to see Corvus Belli going all out with the marketing blitz. Those who know, know it as the "other" game that has probably been the best sci-fi wargame out there for a while now. Hopefully this is able to pierce the Games Workshop echo-chamber most hobby fanboys seem to be heavily entrenched in to give it a try. CodeOne is a spectacular entry point.

For reasons GW is like a separate entity and I don’t think we can compare. But we can always support what we like and make sure it lives on :)

6:34 from my experience stripping metal mini's I know that isopropanol alcohol doesn't interact with super glue, so you don't have to be careful cleaning them. Acetone however does dissolve super glue and paint and thus is a great option for stripping metal mini's that you want to reglue as well (or have them in parts for any other reason).

What a great Video! I really appreciate your content, due to your smart and humoric style - infotainment at its best. Im happy that you present this awesome game - one of the best in my opinion… Finally i love the results of your paintings - as always. Thanks for doing this and i would love to see more infinity content. P.S.: The brutal cities terrain is fits nice ti the cyberpunk settings, but i would recommend more buildings and walkways ;)

Love the video Alex, hope you get more into the game! I’m going to a tournament next month, very excited. Also good to see that you’ve got some nice terrain for the game already hehe, I designed all those buildings for Infinity N3 which had very specific terrain rules. For a full 300 pt game as I’m sure you know now you’ll need about 2 thirds more terrain for a balanced and fun table, due to the ARO mechanic. Again, your speed painting colours are just so lovely! There’s a speed-painting guide on my blog written by a local Infinity painter player (Tom Boele) and he has some really unique and effective colour methods I never knew about (I went to a painting class he ran a while back)

@@52Miniatures😂 two choices: 1) Lots of terrain. 2) only this much terrain and lose half your army in your active turn 😂 Of course this is perfect for a tripped back game. I really love how deadly shooting is in this game.

I have not wanted to touch a mini for wargaming in nearly a year. I have only done Gunpla and Scale cars but I am going to get out my JSA to finally get some paint on them this weekend.
