The thing I like about this list over others is that it delves into things that aren't your standard hobby staples; it looks into inspiration, some classical art bends, as well as things that intrigue the mind. The ground cover blends are something I'll check out, as well as A War Transformed because it doesn't follow the same tropes of weird war with the typical vampire and werewolves. I've recently begun dipping my toe into Bolt Action (and as a result, Konflict 47) so the alternate WWI history looks really engaging. Love the folklore concept, and the art style on the cover is great. Thank you, Alex, for a gem of a video at the holidays. I look forward to what 2025 holds, as your content is something that is always thoughtful (and thought out.) Yours is one of the channels that if I watch when I'm painting I have to stop and pay attention because I know there'll be something that makes me think, which is a treat.

Thanks for the suggestions! Solvent based pigments are interesting bunch I haven't tried before; as for the "issues" with their producers... While it's definitely a dividing factor, the angle I like to think with is that these guides can (and probably often are) used for museums for vignette reproductions. It's better to learn from history, than to shun and forget it altogether. Either way, happy holidays!

@@52Miniatures Alex Im afraid that you dont realize that this is standard practice in scale modeling. I entered the hobby at the age of 12 to 13. The summer that the Golf War started. You know what were the main articles in the modeling magazines? How to model F-117, F-15, Tornados and other machines that were killing people at that very moment. A bit later Yugoslavian Wars. Articles how to model a modified t-34/88 used by Croats to blast Serbs at that moment. Fast Forward ''War against Terror'' yeah guess what was on the modelling guides online and in print. Somalia, Syrian weird home brewed armor, Israeli tanks (all time classic). Its not weird at all in that hobby space to do themes after an ongoing conflict were people are killed. Its military scale modeling. On top of that I can name some Ukrainian scale modeling companies that offer these very vehicles and figures (including up to date unit patches... well at least not the spicy ones). Remember that Ghost of Kiev hoax? Well Its already offered in scale model form by Ukrainian companies. Blaming AK for a failed marketing video is one thing, blaming them for actually doing their job is another.

The vehicles on the cover of that book are both Ukrainian examples of the Soviet arsenal. I understand people not wanting to go near a current conflict in their modelling hobby, but it's far from Russian propaganda. People just tend to half-truth things in an attempt to be offended and cancel others.

It's not the cheapest, but it does the job really well. I'd love to hear some alternatives for AK. I hadn't heard about their most recent controversy, and it really makes me wonder if they learned anything at all from the Condemnation debacle. I'm working through some AK Ultra Matte varnish, and I really do love it. If anyone has suggested alternatives for ultra matte varnish, especially through airbrush, I'd love to hear them. Thanks!

I feel compelled to say, with respect to the AK thing, that one of the things that makes this really awkward is that the hobby is, well, _wargaming._ And I'm not convinced that everyone is here to learn terrible history or to sharpen their military skills against the day when an outside aggressor threatens our own friends and family. I think it's fun and games. About war. Ick. And here am I, consuming this content. If ever there were a genuine example of a slippery slope, of a situation where we can't be sure where along a scale from light to dark the condemnation should start, it's this. Of course they're imaginary, but how much thought _do_ we give, for example, to the imaginary families of the imaginary slain? You see what I mean.
@52Miniatures7 сағат бұрын
I know, there is room for different games. I think I talked about this in one of my Space Marine diorama builds. The worship of conflict, war and killing machines. Moonstone is an example of a game where things don't have to end in death. I guess a lot of the more humorous ones like blood bowl and such can be looked at too. Even though gruesome it's pretty playful. But also more skirmish fun games that are not necessarily about genocide and such....
@stephenspackman55736 сағат бұрын
@@52Miniatures I think I may have babbled in your comments before about my imaginings of a game about strategic rituals and the meetings of religious communities. The painting might even become part of the strategy; I'm sure the gods care about colour theory more than mortals do; after all, they made it ;). Myself I tend to paint the things for the sake of painting the things, and when I play wargames they tend to be the ones with the cardboard counters that are a little more tied to history in one way or another. But that's a matter of taste, and I do-or on days when I'm weak, I merely think that I should-hesitate to condemn. Even in the case of modelling Russian tanks in Ukraine, I'm sure there are some to whom this is like model railways: it's a thing in the world, and it's legitimate, even right, to model things in the world. To others, it's a literal celebration of ongoing evil. And then there's the question of profit, isn't there? It's a complicated world. Thanks so much, Alex, for having a channel where these kinds of thoughts, these kinds of discussions, can exist. I might go to Vince for the technicalities, and I might go to Sam to be blown away, but I come back here for a warm and safe place to think. Thank you.
