Infinity Train Review: S2E6 - The Lucky Cat Car

“The Lucky Cat Car” features many cameo appearances from train denizens we saw in the first season of Infinity Train, in addition to Grace and the Apex showing up at the end of the episode. However, the central focus of this episode is very much the strong bond of support that has formed between Lake and Jesse.

I read into the cat's tone about Jesse more as a conman seeing a wide-eyed starlet -- someone attractive that people would love but was easily manipulatable (which is true!). I couldve just been projecting what we'd already learned about the character though.

I really like that the Apex are formally introduced in The Mall Car. Apex is a synonym of “climax” and the ending of The Mall Car is the start of the climax of Book 2.

I guess I’m curious what your analysis for the apex will be. Personally I find narratives where the audience knows something and it takes a long time for the characters to find out very frustrating if the characters are going the wrong direction. I love the foreshadowed reveal and the slow growth, but people staunchly in the wrong really peeve my cheese

You gotta appreciate the well written character dynamics and flaws in this show,. Even if the passengers learn their lesson, they still have to work to maintain their morals. Something Grace clearly neglected and even outwardly rebels against. People and denizens alike get to grow and change from interacting with each other. .... .... This is why I stand firm in my garbage tendency to ship. Emotional interaction just tends to be more overt in romantic setting, and can intensify previously platonic ones. Not to discredit platonic relationships. Again it's really the nuance that changes depending on perspective.

To piggyback on what you said there's ways we can gauge their emotions. And that's through *Sternberg's triangular theory* on love. Sternberg gives each side of a triangle a feeling. Passion, intimacy, and commitment. And to each feeling a corresponding attribute; depending on how many feelings a given person might display for another person we might mark 1 to 3 for a total of seven different outcomes. Passion is to infatuation as intimacy is to liking and commitment is to empty love. For me Jesse and Lake(M.T.) display both a deep commitment for each other while with what they've gone through an intimacy (hence Jesse's questions). Not yet passionate for each other though so that places them in compassionate love. The building blocks for a romantic relationship are there but short of actual recipication will never become one. They are just good friends for now (platonic as it were) and that not bad. For love is a spectrum and to me shipping (no offense to the shipper) is in line with the toxic masculine thinking that says women in general just want to be f***.

So we can all agree that Lake is trans coded as hell, right? Struggling to live a normal life and have her identity respected despite society constantly knocking her down, naming herself after the first inanimate noun she sees, the butch vibe, police conflict, is extremely uncomfortable being associated with the identity she was previously forced to take on, etc? I'm not saying she IS trans. Just that she's so trans coded that I relate to her waaaay more than I did Tulip. Which I kinda why I liked season 2 so much more.

@@Excelsior1937 She's not misunderstood, they know very well what she wants, the system is just straight up against her will, it's more a reflection on a totalitarian goverment more than anything She also never was ok with that old identity, she just put up with it because, what else could she do? get executed? for trans people is just fear at being shunned, Lake clearly doesn't care about being shunned, she's just concerned for her own life

i had a random thought just now that a cool scene in the next book might be if grace's number plays a part in doing something like, i dunno, lighting the way in a dark train car? and she in the moment has enough development as a character to have her number start dropping rapidly, obscuring the way...like, maybe she does something un-selfish for once and it's such a big leap in character for her that her number plummets, but it also comes into play as an obstacle just because she's losing the light she was using to find her way......probably not going to happen but if i were a writer on this show it might make the cut lol
