Infinity Train Review: S3E3 - The Debutante Ball Car

The Debutante Ball Car, which is filled with living ornaments and aristocratic Cthulian people, requires that anyone passing through must first "enter society." That means Grace, Simon, Hazel, and Tuba have to learn how to ballroom dance. In the process, Grace opens up to Hazel and Tuba about her past, and by the end, Grace even starts to feel low-key empathy for a denizen of the train. Simon, meanwhile, learns nothing.

KZbin is having some technical difficulties with uploading subtitles at the moment, but subs for this video should be available as soon as that gets sorted out (hopefully not too long from now). Also, the finale to Book 3 is releasing 10 minutes from now! I'm jittery just thinking about it!

Namis-Draws sometimes it gets uploaded on KZbin or other sites that have collections of cartoons/anime. If you wait a couple hours and at most like a day, then you’ll be able to find it. I caved today and got hbomax so I can support the show plus KZbin spoiled me.

i like how in the bubble car- the goal was to not "burst someone's bubble" or they might bite. It was a car about boundaries, something that Simon had a consistently difficult time doing not only with the car, but with grace as well.

Another thing about grace's backstory you didn't mention is the implied pressure to succeed and be better than others from her parent's. I think it definitely plays a role in her becoming a cult leader and trying to grow the APEX. Also as a side I think a dance background is a good interesting background for a fighter so I liked that she had one. Dance is one of the best non martial arts bases for a fighter and would help explain allot of her physical prowess and dexterity.

I Heard if Infinity Train gets more support, the creator would go as far as in total 8 seasons. And I am daring to say, if we can get that full support and have a perfect run. This show could genuinely have a chance to rival Avatar: the Last Airbender, in story telling in animation There is a good chance that this show is a second lightning in a bottle. And we can all be able to confirm that, if it goes as far as Owen Dennis' vision.

but it's a HBO Max exclusive, which makes it basically impossible for them to get all that support. I love the show, but they basically shot themselves in the foot

Maybe they can steam it on another cute like Netflix? HBO Max is expensive though. You can always do the free trial. They need to make it accessible for everyone not just the US. But how?

I find it very interesting that Grace and Simon don't actually believe getting your number down to zero leads to being obliterated but instead just going back to life outside of the train. To me that says that the true purpose of the Apex is to look into escapism from the "real world" rather then claiming the train as your own, a goal that oddly mirror's Amelia's.
@CoolCrimsonJaguar

I gotta love that Grace wears an entire ball gown and Simon just wears a jacket *over* his jacket. I also find it interesting that in cars like this one where everything is indoors from start to finish, you can get "outside". It makes sense that there'd be nothing beyond what is supposed to be projected inside the car, but in this instance it's possible to leave that one area. It's like Simon found a glitch in a video game and clipped through the walls, seeing the sky box.

Infinity Train might be one of the best cartoons of all time. That is not a hyperbole. I seriously believe that. Everything about this show from its engaging premise, breathtaking animation, multi-faceted characters, incredible voice-acting, and stunning music makes it such an invigorating and wonderful experience. It also happens to have some of the best writing that I have ever seen from any show - animated or not. It's about as close to perfect as you can possibly get.

1. I think the fact that Grace was looking at the crowd and not at Simon while he was dipping her in the dance implies Grace doesn't care about Simon as a person but as what he represents to her- a friend she can be "honest" with and still have him adore her. 2. I think when Simon talks to Hazel about the song he was letting Grace be alone with Toba on purpose, so that Grace could wheel her if she wanted to The fact Grace did nothing is what brought her number down.

I really love Grace’s head shake, raspberry combo when she makes a decision. It’s actually very similar to something I do when I need to compartmentalize a fear/anxiety and gather resolve. The attention to detail as well as how kinetic the action is really makes her feel like a full person; it’s her “I’m making it work” side as opposed to just the binary “elegant and confident / frazzled” that you often see w/ archetypes like Grace

One of the things I love about Infinity Train's character writing, is how every human character has a hobby that directly reflects on their personality and character flaws without being heave handed about it. It makes the characters fleshed out and really without the details seeming irrelevant or arbitrary.

I don't think Grace necessarily picked up her manipulation ways after she boarded the train. Children that grow up surrounded by adults tend to gain some social skils that other kids don't always have. They learn to talk not with other children, but with adult, that doesn't make them adults but it makes them SOUND like on. So those children can be made fun of becouse of that...or...claim superiority over the other children !

4:10 I get the impression that Grace and Simon know that exiting the train would lead back home and they were lying to Hazel and Tuba to have them perceive the Apex in a high regard. They could see leaving the train as essentially the same as receiving a “Game Over” where your score hits 0 and you lose the game. So in that regard they would still perceive the point of the train as to keep your number high and to avoid getting booted from the game at any cost. In this sense they would feel justified in lying to Hazel about the exit because they feel that they’re doing the right thing by making her want to stay on the train.

Yeah, that's why Grace said "We just lost a boy, Simon, have some respect". This, while it doubles as saying "we lost a cult member", it can ALSO be read "Someone lost their lives, have some respect".

I’m not entirely sure mostly because the look they give each other when Tuba asks about where the kids go gives me the impression that they know there’s a way home but they don’t want passengers to know for their own good. Also the way they phrase Jesse’s escape as an “exit” leads me to believe that they know he’s actually going somewhere instead of just being evaporated.

Great reviews! It's a preasure to watch your videos. I miss the days when I just found your channel and could just binge watch them! Speaking of this video: I'd think Grace actually was a skilled manipulator before the train too, since (spoilers) in her flashbacks she knew exactly where to hit and which words to use to start a fight between four friends while being an outsider; even more, later she convinced a group of friends - presumably also wealthy and usually well-behaved kids - to steal at a mall just for her to get some attention. Learning to read moods and appease different people in different situations is one of the ways to deal with detached and abusive parents, as well as a way to make "friends", when a person just never learned to trust natural, genuine connections.
@zer0w0lf94
@zer0w0lf94 3 жыл бұрын
There’s also the flashback of Grace’s mom getting her servants to take Grace out of the house so as not to embarrass the Monroe family in front of an ambassador. Grace was well aware that authority and control are things that come with having power before boarding the Infinity Train, and her encounter with Amelia and The Steward served as both a reminder of this fact and inspiration to attain power for herself by founding the Apex.

3:48, with them calling it "exit", I think they know the person leaves the train and is not incinerated, so they must know you go back to the old world. But I also believe that you are right that they avoid thinking about it. They see the train as a "colony" they are entitled to and must conquer (back) from the machines, so I suppose someone taking their exit is like defecting for them. And I wonder how much of their worldview is due to them, especially Grace, not wanting to go back to the "real" world/not being willing to face their trauma.

I’m surprised you didn’t analyze this line Grace says in reference to The Conductor - whom we know to be Amelia - when explaining the Apex to Hazel: “He has the highest number in the world, and even saved my life once! So, we wear the red wave on our faces to honor him!” Not only is it the first instance of the Apex displaying accurate knowledge about the Infinity Train (Amelia having the highest number), but it gives us our first piece of lore in regards to the Apex’s creation (they all wear red waves on their faces like the one on Amelia’s mech because Amelia saved Grace’s life). This line is our first clue that Grace and Simon genuinely believe high numbers are a good thing and founded the Apex out of a misguided desire to help people like how Amelia helped Grace, rather than being formed solely out of a desire for power like Book 2 implied. However, Simon and Grace’s awareness of Amelia’s number contradicts the masculine language they use when describing her (man, he, him). If they know about Amelia’s number, then they’ve seen her outside of her mech, and thus know she’s a woman. So why do they say “man,” “he,” and “him” when talking about her? My initial thought was that Simon and Grace had lied to the Apex and were lying to Hazel on the off chance they encountered Amelia in her mech again so the kids would think Simon and Grace were right when they said The Conductor was a man. I’ll tell you how this thought changed as we proceed with Book 3. While we’re on the topic of lying, hearing Grace say The Conductor has the highest number initially made me think she was lying to Jesse when she said she has the highest number back in “The Mall Car” in an effort to get him to join her side. It wasn’t until Grace later clarified that she doesn’t count the The Conductor since “he” was ousted by One-One that I realized she wasn’t.

Do you have reviews out for season 2 episodes 8-10? To me those are still the episodes which are most interesting in terms of doing things other kids shows haven't done, not just in killing villains on screen - and framing that as absolutely the right thing to do - but also in taking a position on individual self determination and identity as the paramount moral imperitive. That's a very different top imperative that nearly all other childrens media, which would have punished Lake for a 'lack of gratitude' for what they had rather than rewarding them for their unwavering insistance on what had been denied to them. It's a rare and important case where an unambiguously happy ending was, imo, significantly more subversive and profound than the bittersweet alternative would have been.
