Infinity - The Sizes of Infinity Explained

This was probably one of the most confusing videos for me to make, but the team over at Brilliant really helped me out and personally helped clear up some confusion I had. I can vouch for them and say that they really played a big role in helping me understand the topics I covered here.
Here are some more videos for you to watch if you're interested (or even confused) about Infinity. It's a really confusing topic, but I find that it's really interesting to dive into!
Michael from Vsauce's "How To Count Past Infinity" & "Supertasks" • How To Count Past Infi...
• Supertasks
Standupmath's "Ordinals vs Cardinals:" • Ordinals vs Cardinals ...
Mathologer's "Pi = Infinity - Infinity:" • Riemann's paradox: ...
PBS' Infinite Series. There's a bunch of good videos covering Infinity here. Some of them get pretty complex, but if you're really interested, I highly suggest you watch them: • An Infinite Playlist

A question.. so when we were adding 10 balls and removing one ball i.e the step number ball..you said we will have zero balls left at the end.. how? What about all the other 9 balls we add each time? There can't be zero balls left..

He said that you were catching up each time. So you would beat him in the race. If (T) starts at 5m and you start at 0 then (T) 6m (You) 2m (T) 7m (You) 4m (T) 8m (You) 6m (T) 9m (You) 8m (T) 10m (You) 10m (T) 11m (You) 12m This is an example of the race. You reached your maximum speed but you are still running at the peak consistently and so is the tortoise. You'll win by that logic.

Its kind of like the aleph null (which I will represent as N'0 ) to aleph one ( N'1) problem My theory is that just like from 0 > 1 , N'0 > N'1 there will be an infinite amount of numbers, as in the real numbers talked about. This would in turn make N'1 infinitely bigger, making the gap between N'0 and N'1 infinitely bigger (repeating the process). I would like to hea- see your reviews on this.. or should i just make this a comment instead of a comment's reply (comment's comment)

@Chillish I just got tired of people saying they didn't understand it. I felt a small uncomfortable pinch in my brain every time a read a comment like that and I unfortunately could not stop myself from posting that in frustration. Lets be honest here, that stuff is not difficult, its fascinating! you just have to adjust your brain correctly to see why it makes sense and how to derive stuff like that on your own. Its great, because there are such few rules, kind of like programming a computer: you are only limited by the space in which you are working.

I use to have the same discussion with my academically talented 8th grade math students. Does a plane actually land if it only descends half it's distance to the ground? Do your feet actually the floor when you get out of bed? If I let you go to the restrooms', will you ever get there in time? Proved to be a very interesting discussion on infinity and the word infinite.

Planck lenght / time breaks the paradox
@RebellionEliteClan
@RebellionEliteClan 5 жыл бұрын
That's exactly what I was thinking because there isn't an infinitesimal number that can not be divided in half, and is seen as not physically significant. It's the plank length, that's not it though. There is also an amount of time that if any smaller wouldn't be considered physically significant, the plank time. which is how long it takes light to travel a plank length. Vsauce explains this well in his supertask video.

Your videos make already quite interesting subjects on a completely new level. For example, i knew about the moon landing, but decided to watch your video anyway. And it blew me away. You would deserve so much more subscribers. I have only recently discovered your channel and now recommended it to a few friends and my family. Thank you. You have taught me a lot things, which i thought i already knew but didnt. I hope you continue to do this for a long time. I look forward to the mid 2020s when we land on mars. Maybe you could make a video about that, because that is also a topic im incredibly interested in. Until your next video, and have a good life. i mean it.

you will surpass the tortoise at a time. In the video,you aren't just dividing length but time too.While looking at smaller length,you are also dividing the time. In effect,you are slowing down time more and more as the man approach the tortoise. Initially you are looking at 50 m in 5 s then 10 m in 1 s.then 5 m in 0.5 s.then 2.5 m in 0.25 s and so on. so the distance they meet becomes 50+10+5+2.5... and the time is 5+1+0.5+0.25.... so you are looking at what value the distance approaches in the limit where the time approaches the time of collision. This is just the basis of calculus. saying the man will never be ahead of the tortoise is wrong

You clearly did not watch the full video if you dont remember him talking about our ability to complete an infinite number of tasks in a finite amount of time
@ThisIsWEB
@ThisIsWEB 5 жыл бұрын
@@ethansadberry6069 i keep typing big replies on here and accidentally clearing out my text :'/ not trying to argue really, i just wanna makes sense of stuff too doing infinite tasks in a finite amount of time is not actually possible because the endpoint given in the video is one we will NEVER reach. Asking for the state of the lightbulb at the end of the hour is meaningless because you will never get to the end of the hour. In reality, yes the hours passes. But in reality, time moves forward (linearly). In the experiment, we observe time that slows down (moving forward, but fractionally). In reality, the man passes the tortoise. We can calculate when this happens. In the experiment, he will never reach it because as he races, time is slowing down indefinitely. Since we cannot break down time into a definable unit, we can *theoretically* complete tasks on and on forever. But the task of catching up simply does not happen unless we allow time to not lose speed. The question of the lightbulb being on or off at the end is invalid because if you could actually switch it in half the time as the tasks, you would also never reach the end of the hour. I explained it way better before but I've written this out like three times lol.

12:00 But in the second example, let's say you end up with infinity, because you infinitely add a net of nine, you still remove 1 ball every step, and 1 ball removed * infinity = infinity balls removed, therefore the amount removed equals the amount inside, and a fundamental law of mathematics is x - x = 0, therefore the amount of balls, is zero.
