Neck pain is a very common disorder caused mainly by degenerative processes in the spine but also by herniated discs (when the pain is more severe), by so-called "whiplash," a movement that involves sudden extension of the neck muscles that is immediately followed by flexion, or due to the presence of arthrosis.
However, neck pain can also occur due to poor posture or a sedentary lifestyle, with symptoms such as stiffness, pain, and restricted movement that can have a major impact on the patient's life.
The task of the osteopath, is to identify, through a comprehensive evaluation of the patient, the origin of the disorder, to find the right treatment and reduce not only the pain but also the inflammatory process that caused it.
A question that many people ask me is as follows:
"Doctor, how does osteopathy help with neck problems?"
Neck problems can have several causes. Very often neck problems have a postural origin, think of the wrong postures that most workers have by standing 8 hours a day in front of the PC in the office or always keeping the head flexed forward to look at the cell phone.
Another very common cause is neck pain post whiplash or fall trauma. The third origin is dental occlusion and TMJ (temporomandibular joint) problems that can affect the neck causing very painful muscle spasms.
All these case histories need to be treated differently, and the osteopath is able to recognize the cause and treat it as correctly as possible.
That said...see wine at the end of today's case of our patient Simone!
