Former Prime Minister John Howard has blasted the Albanese Labor government saying inflation is “still too high”.
“Interest rates are a reflection of economic conditions, domestically and internationally,” Mr Howard said during a media conference on Thursday.
“Inflation is still too high and that’s fuelled by government spending.”

John Winston Howard was Australia’s best PM since Menzies and at 85 stellar years of age can still speak profoundly without notes, making more sense than any of today’s political oxygen thieving class…. I had the pleasure of meeting John on several occasions including a round chair discussion at a BBQ. John is an affable, sensible, intelligent, and defining Australian treasure of consequence in the past 5 decades. May John WISDOM Howard live long. A true Australian national treasure.

He's completely right. 50 basis point rise was required six months ago and is still needed now. Inflation in Q2 was still 3.8%, but it should be noted underlying key areas were often much higher e.g. services (4.5%), alcohol and tobacco (6.8%), housing (5.2%), rent (7.3%), health (5.7%), transport (4.6%), education (5.6%), insurance & financial services (6.4% vs 8.2%). We are well outside the 2% to 3% guideline and well outside that for many key areas important to most Australians e.g. Housing, Rent, Health and Education.

In 1996, the Howard government inherited $96 billion in debt and by 2007 had been completely paid off and hence, Australia had a budget surplus of $20 billion. A few years later after Labor came to office the $20 billion surplus was totally spent. Labor is only good at spending but hopeless in economic management. That is why I never vote Labor.

Costello could have rejuvenated the Libs. Many were pro-Republic and pro-Same Sex Marriage, issues Howard spurned to the party's cost. Costello could have led them into the 2000s, not Howard's 1950s. It would have been hard to win in 2007 regardless, but Costello could have reduced the loss of seats.
