the temperature on his freezer is too low for sorbet. the frozen fruit he was using literally had all the moisture frozen solid. that's why it was so hard to use (basically ice cubes). also he didn't break it - that part is meant to come out so you can clean the damn thing.

Or better yet, buy them ice cream or an ice cream maker. The only kids I know who'd want to eat mashed up frozen fruit with no sugars mixed in are the kind whose parents and super, duper controlling about what they eat and the kid's never had ice cream or processed food ever. (And those are the kind of kids whom, once they're off to college, are going to pork out on everything their parents denied them. If not doing it in high school behind their parents' backs. Like the boy of a super controlling vegan mom I knew growing up who'd go to Sizzler for the All You Can Eat Ribs every chance he could get.)

I remember a trick I used for my. Old shaved ice machine that did this. Less preasure helps. You would need to to crank longer but it would reduce strain on the thing. Not that I think it would be worth it. But if you have a power drill with a ratchet attachment I bet you could plug it into where that Handel is/was and get this thing actually working.

This whole product seems to rest on quite a lot of assumptions as to how people have the temperatures set on their freezers and heating/air conditioning systems, doesn't it? Something tells me I'd be better off using my electric blender if and when I want to make something like that.

I sometimes think that the problem with a lot of these devices is that they make them of the cheapest materials possible. If this thing were made of stainless steel, with a long, sturdy handle for plenty of torque, and a heavy base to hold the thing in place, it might actually work, even if it would just produce frozen-fruit pulp, not sorbet. Instead, they make it entirely out of plastic, so it breaks after about a minute.

I had the same flashbacks many have had to Mr Frosty. It's so sad, because it's a concept that has seen at least three incarnations now, and not one has really worked. I feel bad, because I can understand kids wanting to make things. As a kid, I just learned to cook. My parents wanted me to know, so I handled a blade by the time I was in my teens, and I could make a decent meal or follow a recipe with good results. This is a situation where you teach the older kids to use a blender or similar device, and it will make the thing for you faster and just as safely, like removing the container from the motor before you scoop out, which you're liable to do, anyway.

To be fair, it does make sense for the designers to make the grinding components plastic, you wouldn't want some kid putting their hands in there and getting hurt. I remember a childhood friend of mine had one of these ice grinders with metal parts. He put his hand in and turned the crank just to see what would happen and by the time he realized what he was doing he had already ground up his arm up to the elbow. It took the combined effort of both his parents to stop him when he was halfway his other forearm.

This is just a guess but I wonder if Mike was pressing down too hard on the top part putting downward force on the rotating grinder pin thingy. Maybe if he just put the fruit in and then turned the crank without pushing down it might have worked really well. Just a guess. It can't be THAT bad.
@jimstanley_49
@jimstanley_49 7 жыл бұрын
He didn't let the fruit sit out "20 minutes before start". Given that the fruit was still frozen solid, he *was* pressing down with too much force. For being misused the thing was actually working pretty well until he decided the remedy was *moar power!* He could have added a bit of water help defrost and lubricate and it would have worked beautifully.

@ZeroTron

They probably wanted you to take the fruit out of the bag for the defrosting procedure, but that design is fundamentally flawed. The threads are way too shallow so when it inevitably deforms from resistance it pops straight off by simply skirting around the threads. They should've made those at least twice as deep, used a metal insert or not used threads at all to hold that piece on.

I had a Mr Frosty as a kid but it never worked...I think my ice cubes maybe needed defrosting a bit 😂 seriously the ice was too hard and the handle wouldn’t turn to ‘grate the ice’ and so the handle kept jumping off. Worst present from Santa, ever! Apart from a Yahtzee game a couple of years after which I had no idea how to play until this year when I downloaded the app to my mobile and eventually sussed it out.

I saw something like this (can’t remember what is was called) that was instead electric and marketed towards adults. Somehow I think that might be better than this one.

I do put frozen fruit in a BLENDER and make it...into mush. But I must teach the children to call it a "sorbet".

I imagine this product would work if it had actual blades in it. (though of course that wouldn't make it very kid friendly)

Maybe you should wait for the fruit to defrost a bit. Hahaha. Awesome content as usual.

Why did they make the handle removal? It’s like they made this product bad on purpose.

You should redo this, except you should drive the crank with an impact wrench.

That was just an even cheaper and nastier version of the old childhood nemesis Mr Frosty. I still have the scars on my knuckles from using that bugger, swearing in frustrated pain, smashing it against the kitchen wall and using a rolling pin and plastic bag to crush the ice more effectively and speedily. Why not try training the cat to use it as a bog?
