I know he covered being seen, heard or smelled, but it my mind being seen because of movement is the biggest culprit. Deer are way, way better at picking up movement than humans. When I first started bow hunting, I went for the first two years without seeing any deer. The clue light came on for me when my brother-in-law and I were discussing how bad the mosquitos were. He showed how he was keeping them off the eye opening in his head net, using a long twig with just the tinniest bit of movement. some pretty good info. Some other stuff to keep in mind is use the terrain to your advantage. He touched on it a bit with using creek beds and whatnot to conceal your movements but my favorite spot to rifle hunt is a gully. its only about 400 yards from where i park to where i sit but i sit about half way down the side of this gully and I always see deer coming out at the bottom. The design of the gully helps to keep my scent away from the deer because the wind blows it over the top of them. plus they love walking down at the bottom of it because it gives them just enough cover to feel safe and it protects them from heavy winds. Then theres the fact that deer very seldom look up. so even though i sit almost completely open they never notice me.

If you are looking for an animal, you are going to miss them. You look for movement or something out of place. I was a kid and standing there looking at the same tree my dad was pointing out a squirrel in. I couldn't see it. He asked what I was looking for. I said "A squirrel DUHHH!!" He was like that is why you are not seeing it. Look for a flick of the tail, an ear, a tree branch wiggling, a leaf moving the wrong direction based on the wind. I started doing that and the whole woods became full of animals. With deer. Know where the deer hide. Hunt the edges of those areas. Stay out of sight, downwind, and BE QUIET when entering and exiting. I still remember setting in my tree stand on public land and multiple hunters walking past a small wooded area not far from the parking area on private land. After the hunters went into the woods and got up in their trees this huge buck crawled out of that little wooded area and went over and grazed next to their trucks. About 11 am that deer walked back and laid down in that same wooded area when the guys started down out of their stands about 150 yards inside that woods. Heard them complaining that there were no deer in that area that day.

I just popped 6 point last nigh with about 10 minutes of shooting light left. Went back to get my stand out of the land today, and as I pulled up, to guys were coming out around 10:30. They said they saw my truck yesterday and did not come into the woods. That is very courteous of them, but I told them that I view it as it's public land and as long as they're not hunting on top of me, they have as much right to be there as I do. But there are some who set up a blind right on the main trail only about 60 yards from the road, then get pissy when someone crosses their path.

The reason I'm not seeing deer here on public land in lower Michigan is because the DNR has allowed them to be killed off by issuing too many deer tags.

Very true. My friend and I got one by hunting a pressured 2 quarter section crown grazing lease here in Alberta. I came in from the west fence line. Then cut in to the center. Just over a very small hill I saw the ears of mule deer run in the direction of my friend. Less than a minute later...BANG! The plan worked that time. My Whitetail buck was a bit of an accident. I couldn't scout another stricter access controlled grazing lease. Set up looking at where the does were moving last year. Nothing. Late morning I went for a quiet stroll to look for sign. Not much. Went down to the lake along the cow trail to see where they were moving to water to plan for the afternoon sit. Saw the flash of the white tail 60 yards up the hill. Hello 5x4 buck. BANG!

Oh a 100% you’re right, I love when dudes say there’s no deer out here when they go to there stand a half hour after daybreak and stay for a hour or two all while hunting a 100 yards off the track

I don’t necessarily agree with getting in way before daylight and or getting out way after dark, I have done both however it just depends on how the deer move through your property when you do it, this past hunting season I always got into my stand 5 minutes before shooting light because the deer on my property were moving through an hour and a half to a half hour before daylight, and it just so happens I didn’t spook one deer this year, and I saw over 300 deer I would estimate, got a nice 10 point out of it aswell👍
@chadhunts62024 жыл бұрын
The only thing I disagree on is getting to your stand "at least 30 minutes early" and calling them "lazy" hunter's when they might actually be making better timing decisions, sometimes the location, or normal deer movement calls for earlier or later movement, the closer to food sources the earlier you want to be in normally, but some locations close to bedding area's actually will benefit from a daybreak still hunt to the stand site, this also may be necessary when the bedding is very close to the food, it's not a one size fits every situation kinda thing, Up here in Wisconsin we have 2 spots that I can think of that you rarely see deer movement before 8 am, so going in at 5:30 or 6 on a cold day may be deer hunting suicide if you get cold and have to leave when the deer are on there feet, I just think you should add in most of the time going in early is preferable, and don't call all the guys going in late lazy, some of them are doing that on purpose depending on the spot! There are situations where going in 30 minutes early is actually a bad idea if you don't want to bump deer...

i agree, 2 years ago i found a spot where the deer didnt come out in the field till after 9:30am. i could get there at 6am but i knew they wouldnt come out till after 9:30. same with turkey hunting sometimes...it depends on the specific animals you are seeing and hunting.

In the "off season" I "dry hunt". That is hunting without a bow or gun. I do this all through the off season. I know my woods. I know my quarry. I know where the deer are going to be and approximately what times they will be there. So when season opens rarely am I skunked. I fill all my tags and the freezer. In other words... you should know what the hell your doin before season opens. Success year after year after year is not accidental or luck.

You have to get serious and sleep at your stand. Where i hunt, the deer bed on ridges looking down at the quarter mile open ground i have to cross. Plus the wind usually carries my scent straight up to them. I dont care how early you go in during dark, if they scent you, you arent seeing big bucks. Gotta get above them and stay above them, till you see the One. Hard-core mode.

So I have roughly 7 acres of land and we mowed a path through the field during summer and kept it trimmed and the deer were moving a lot. We have trail cams up that I’ve checked once a week sometimes once every 2 weeks but now they have all vanished. All I see now is a single doe on cam at midnight. I follow all these steps to the dot but seems like they moved on even though there’s a corn field, grass field and water within a good walking distance. Not to mention plenty of cover. You can hear gun shots 1+ miles away leaving my area pretty quiet. But they seem to keep moving out to them rather than a secluded area here where killing them is pretty quiet due to bow hunters. Any tips?

Watch for movement. I took this advice two or three weeks ago and I've seen about 15 to 20 deer in the 100 to 120 yard range in the forest, deer I'd never seen before. When I watched for movement I could then make out hidden deer and watch them as they moved around - when I saw them, and they were mostly still, I stayed still myself and many came into range. I've taken 3 does since I first watched this video.

I'm a Michigan hunter. Seems like everyone in Michigan is a hunter too. You really have to know the least populated places to hunt in, and it seems to be mostly in the extreme North or the extreme South in this state. Mid-Michigan state land I have washed my hands of. I have had too many bad hunts because locals show up the middle of opening morning and flop down on a bucket not 50 yards from my blind. Meanwhile I have spent months putting in the time to research to prepare in order to be sure I am in a place where hunting pressure seems the lowest. It's gotten to the point that my brother and I are looking for private land to buy to get away from other people who don't put in the time, but also don't care who's hunt they spoil.

Even after I took my deer there last year I left my cell cams up and had dozens coming to feed right up until the heavy snow hit then my batteries in my cam died so this year I thought I would get a early start on the spot I used last year and took a feeder out and some Salk licks and replaced my battery’s in my my cell cam but I haven’t gotten 1 on cam at that spot as of yet April 17 2022. I only hunt public lands. By choice. My favorite stories are of the deer I shot that came right past other hunters who try to stand me off. I have hunted the same 80 acres (opening day of rifle season) for thirty years and can usually tell where the other hunters are going to be. Knowing my woods, I then pick a spot that uses this information. Also, I am ALWAYS the FIRST person on stand opening two days. I let the other hunters move the deer to me. Just a tip at the end there. As I no longer live in the state that I hunt in, my "scouting" is limited to one day and usually the week before the hunt.

I hang all my hunting clothes and boots over a wood smoke fire than store them in a large plastic tote. I store the tote in a shed not in the house. I would say get in your stand an hour before sunrise considering you can legally shoot a half hour before.
@jameslinzmeier3683 жыл бұрын
Opening day (public land hunter here) I get into my stand a full two hours before shooting time. My goal is to be the first shot of the year (legal) and have done so three times. Most years I am done an hour after the season opens. I let the late comers push the deer to me. I think, even if I made some noise getting in, the deer forget about me when the others enter the woods.
@bwilson70004 жыл бұрын
I agree with most you said. But not the get in stand well before daylight. I have this debate every year with hunting buddies. I never go in before daylight anymore. And have had deer by my stand minutes after getting in. The reason I stopped is because of the light. You can see light for miles if open. And the deer do not need a second sense to confirm your not another deer. When I sneak in right at daylight, if they hear me they are real close cause I’m very stealthy. But if I go in before They can see you cause of light. And can bet they would have been bumped off. If you are quiet and a deer does not see you they do not know what you are. And they can’t run from every tiny sound. But a light on the other hand. I have been doing this the last three seasons and have been seeing more deer and bumping less.

I go take your approach sometimes but more often I go in well before sunrise... I only use my head lamp when I have to and it’s a red lamp... so most of the walk in I’m going in without a flashlight or head lamp at all...
