Ferocious finish by Ingo, who is arguably the most underrated heavyweight champ of them all. That right would have troubled any sub-200 pounder in history, and is on a par with Max Schmeling's delivery.

+Tom B It is a matter of circumstances. First of all - Johansson had one of the hadest right hands ever in HW - and then the fact that it was cold in Gothenburg that evening. And in the ring Machen had to wait longer than he expected before the fight got on. He may have been warmed up and ready entering the ring - but he was cooled down at the first bell.

I have to agree with you Dan... Jack Dempsey said the same about Ingo ... When he developed that hard left jab... the "toonderbolt" became even more lethal... Machen wasn't a slouch .. I think ranked in the top 3 at this fight and Ingo got him outa there in a hurry ... A fighter either has that power.. or he doesn't .. don't think it's an acquired asset...

Agree, Tom B. Eddie was masterful in that Liston bout. Seemed much more determined and energetic in that fight than in this one - maybe he didn't expect as much from Ingo, who wasn't particularly intimidating in his demeanor, while Liston was someone you had to psyche-up for in a big way. It's interesting how Machen v. Liston prefigures Clay/Ali v. Liston. It's clear in the former that a determined, quick boxer with great reflexes and ring skills can give Liston trouble. And boy did Clay/Ali do that. I'll bet he watched Machen v. Liston a hundred times.

Sebastian Engman At least he could be funny sometimes as well as obnoxious. See the lead up to the first Liston fight. Clay was a riot. He didn’t just insult Liston, he did it in a way that was very entertaining to watch. (Not to Liston but to the public) Plus, he was a very great boxer. You have to give him that. But these guys today are not witty - not at all - they’re just completely obnoxious. And worse, they’re mostly third rate fighters! They’re clowns. It’s like pro-wrestling took over pro-boxing.

@@syourke3 The fighters prior to Ali were all about who would earn there way to the top to fight the World Champion. Ali performance against Liston was all about avoiding the top contenders on the list like Machen, Williams and Foley especially. Williams was ranked equal to Ali but his management didn’t want that hurdle. Liston should’ve stood his ground denied him the title shot until he fought Williams or all 3 men and Ingemar Johansson. Ali didn’t want to be asleep on the mat and counted out if and when Williams landed his powerful left hook. Instead gave him a title shot after he was shot by a policeman.357 magnum

Should have been stopped after the second knock down. Machen clearly didn't have his equilibrium. I thought one of the responsibilities of a referee is to protect the fighters. Obviously, no one told that ref that. It was obvious Machen could no longer protect himself, but the ref became a spectator and forgot what his job was. It’s fights like these that made the standing 8-count necessary. My question to that referee, if you can call him that, would be, “What would you have to see in order to step in and call a halt to the bout?”

My dad told me about a colleague who went to this match. He found his seat and sat down and immediately he heard a roaring and everyone sat up. He didn't even get to see a single punch before it was all over. Ingmar had a very close right and not as tucked in. So it was hard to see coming plus he had the force behind it despite it's length. Eddie underestimated this and went right into it as seen here. Floyd would do the same in the beginning. Ingmar said afterwards that sadly he got eager and did a light volley instead of waiting for a single punch. But he also pointed out since it was an american that he had to win by knock out. Otherwise there would always be people who would say "He rose up, there was still a chance he could win". He had to make sure there was no question he was done. Same when boxing in the us. It had to be a knock out, he could never win by points.

That's right. He had one more chance to save the championship portion of his career. Two years after this fight, he met Liston and fought a brilliant defensive fight...went the full 12 rounds with Sonny, longer than anyone had done, or would. Had Machen been more offensively minded, he'd have won the decision. Then, he would have finally fought Patterson for the title. One thing about Machen: he was the only man who fought Liston...until Clay, who was totally unintimidated. At the weigh-in, when Liston tried to psyche out Machen, Eddie laughed and said, "You ain't scarin' anyone, Sonny." One thing I saw Machen do against Liston, that nobody---not even Clay---did was tie-up Sonny...use leverage and strength...and force Liston back onto the ropes. Manhandled him. But those losses to Johansson and Liston, when the big chance was there, and Eddie didn't take advantage of them, he, for all practical purposes, sabotaged his career. But with his looks and physique, he should have tried acting. I never heard him speak, but I imagine he spoke well enough. Too bad.

OBVIOUS that the ref should have stopped the fight after the second knock-down. Even Machen's corner should have intervened.

Strange that Machen went 12rounds with Liston, and got blown away by a one- punch fighter like Johansen, who was KO' 2x by Patterson. Also strange the very long range camera angle except at the very end. Johansen had a great right hand for certain, but Machen was a very tough fighter with a great chin that withstood everything that the monster Liston threw at him.

Aidan Jalbert True. Johansson had a powerful right hand. He could hit very hard. He clobbered Patterson with it in 1960. But then Patterson beat him twice, so like I say, you never can tell.

Ingo undoubtly had a very heavy right hand punch but thats not really the trick that made the difference. He had something very rare as an exact timing of throwing that right hand punch in the exact nano second. That is why Machen nor Floyd ever saw any punch coming. Its a well known fact that the brain can protect itself from a punch provided you eyes notice it upfront. This ability I have not spotted amongst any of the other heavyweight champions. Ingo at his peak during 1957-1959 would have been a very hazardeous oponent to any of the other champions. After gaining the championship belt in 1959 he sort of lost interest of dull training and boxing. The fights afterwards he hit oponents with many right hands with no obvious effect. He simply lost that special talent though still his right hand was as hard as it comes. For instance, Brian London ranked Ingos right hand punch as hard but not spectacular

Yes, I agree with these comments: the ref should have waved his hands much sooner, it didn't look like Machen was getting up. I guess Ingo was the real deal, I was actually 2 weeks old when this bout took place! Also, I highly respect Floyd Patterson, and he showed mettle in his rematch with Johansson in 1960.

You need to realise Ingemar Johansson proved his worth as a fine champion taking the title away from Patterson. Johansson was worthy of that title shot and trilogy that came after it. But yes he could’ve continued boxing well into 60’s and early 70’s had he remained focused. But Machen didn’t know what hit him

Take a look at Patterson Johansson 1. After the first knockdown Floyd thinks HE knocked Johansson down and clearly out of it , starts heading to a neutral corner. Johansson hits him a rabbit punch in back of the head sending him to the canvass again but the ref lets him get knocked down 5 more times!

The referee was slow to react, could have gotten Machen killed. If this fight had been shown in the US, Ingo wouldn't have been a 5-1 underdog against Floyd in 1959.
