Klayton I just want to clarify as a marine biologist graduate, that the "new Spinosaurus" neotype was criticized because of inaccurate fossils from different locations (Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt), black markets with no information regarding the fossils and different size portions where paleontologists had to guess work how it'll grow. Sigilmassasaurus and Spinosaurus Maroccanus was lumped into being Spinosaurus Aegyptiacus with very little to explanation along with their "Knuckle walking theory". That team pretty much rushed and ignored the flaws to get fame. Luckily though it has back fired. Thus creating what many have dubbed an inaccurate *Chimera*. From what I've seen or read around the web, only fanboys continue to push this false reconstruction. It's most likely similar to what its depiction was prior to this mess. Just like its relatives Baryonyx and Irratitor.

I agree. At first I was open to the idea of a quad Spino, but the more I look at it, the more I realize how. . .unrealistic and unbalanced it look. Yeah, the quadruped/knuckle walking posture has more problems in the that the supposed forelimb material don't show adaptations for weight bearing features for quadrupedal locomotion. If it were, then the hands should have bore more similarities to the forelimbs of something like the giant ground sloths, where their hands were extensively modified into supporting those animals' much larger body masses in comparison to their extant tree dwelling relatives. Their carpals, metacarpals, and digits are bulky, scrunched and fused together, and kinda flattened on the part of the hand that made contact on the ground. Spinosaurus was a much larger animals in comparison to even the largest ground sloth known, so we should have expected to see very similar modifications to its forelimbs if it too were a knuckle-walking quadruped, but the limb bones themselves do not seem to show that. Anyway, that is why I have been siding against the quadruped reconstruction.

Another great showcase, but I am actually more interested in your thoughts of modern paleontology in the public eye. As someone who is entering the field myself, I am curious of outside opinions on how paleontology is presented and you're in a pretty unique position to give that opinion. As for the hybrid idea, it does bring up a thought I've had for a while: what is the limit for what we consider a "hybrid"? Technically no dinosaur in the franchise is 100% pure, since the original film they've been splicing genes together and revived specimens have had features not present in the original species, no matter how close we get. So with that said, technically all dinosaurs are hybrids, some are just "close enough" to be given genus names of fossil species which they presumably share DNA with. I think this is quite interesting since, besides the spino, you have cases like Telltale's Troodon, the Dilophosaurus, and even the Velociraptor.

Although over the years there has been increasing discussion about a number of issues, one thing is clear: The Spinosaurus ran like all other theropods: Biped. Perhaps a bit of both Biped and Quadro when needed, but never on the knuckles. They would break constantly. The eating pattern is gradually becoming clearer: it ate more than just fish (small Dino's, turtles, Pterosauridae etc) Which of the two Spinosaurs I find the best or beautiful (real life or film) both have their charms. But don't forget: It is a film, and therefore allowed to deviate somewhat from reality with fiction 😉 👍

The behind the scenes info says, “The roars of the Spinosaurus in Jurassic Park III were created by mixing the low guttural sounds of a lion and an alligator, a bear cub crying, and a lengthened cry of a large bird that gave the roars a raspy quality”... yet somehow, I have a tremendous amount of trouble hearing those sounds in there. I feel like identifying the real world sounds for most of the the dinosaur’s vocalizations is typically pretty easy, but not here. They created a whole new sound just for this creature! Just another one of the many reasons why I love this franchise so much.

Love this video and always love the JPIII Spino. Always seems to me that the division over the real Spino's bipedal/quadrapedal state is similar to the Tyrannosaurus' status as either a hunter or a scavenger and other divisive debates. It just seems like there either isn't enough solid information to say any which way, or the division of opinion means that the subject could sit in the middle and have elements of both. Personally I think with its sheer size alone, the Spino would be able to gain enough momentum to run on hind legs, but would regularly use all four limbs...Similar to how hadrosaurs are depicted in media. Also, wasn't there an example of a Spino fossil where one of the sail bones was bitten in half by another predator...? (I think that was in the series Planet Dinosaur...)
@Dynotop1a5 жыл бұрын
Adam Mitulinski There is direct fossil evidence of Tyrannosaurus predation on hadrosaurs and ceratopsians. It’s also anatomically impossible for spinosaurus to be a quadruped. It’s arms could not have supported its own weight. Unfortunately a lot of these debates get heavily publicized and misrepresented by the media. And they hardly follow up after the debates are solved. Thus leaving the public behind with an outdated view of the animals. It’s a major problem for paleontology.

I know this comes pretty late, but yes Planet Dinosaur did say the broken spine is bitten in half, but when you look at the fractured bone itself, you se ist broke like a snapped branch and not bitten off, I'm pretty sure that Spinosaurus, Stroner found died because of the injuries of his sail, but rather somthing like a fall that broke the bone rather than a Charcharodontosaurus

You keep singling out the Spinosaurus. You're misinforming everyone. Alteori did a video on Spinosaurus not being a hybrid perfectly well without being biased.

Like a croc getting spooked when sun bathing what if the spino moved to 4 legs to make a fast escape, it's obvious that it doesn't have a bite force for fighting so with the sail what if it was used for: Balance when on 2 legs. Used for display to intimidate stronger predatory Dino's. Used 4 legs for escape when a show of display didn't work out warn away others. Display of size and colour is used even today in our animals, so maybe it's one reason.

@@alpha7even928 A Croc? When did you see this?

@@alpha7even928 a Spino would have been able to stand up against a Sarco on land or on shallow water because Spino had the height advantage, was better-armed and was warm-blooded which means it doesn't tire as quickly as the Sarco and can constantly pin the Sarco down and drain its energy. Also T.rex only had its bite going for it and a T.rex doesn't have as much experience as what alot of people thought it did because it rarely fights other Rexes, loses to Trikes and Ankys more often and only hunts large-hadrosaurs. Spino on the other hand, had problems literally everywhere that it had to deal with. So technically, a Spino wouldn't have been an easy kill for a T.rex. Very recent findings even more stongly suggest it was semi-aquatic. The tail bones discovered are specially adapted for swimming motion with had fin like structure all the way to the tip of the tail (where it was in fact larger). As much as people don't like the 'new' spinosaurus, the Ibrahim research team is not wrong. EVerything about Spinosaurus suggests it was heavily adapted for a semi-aquatic lifestyle and would not have fared very well on dry lands. The nose bones have pressure sensors for detecting fish, the actual nostrils are very high up which would allow the spinosaurus to keep the tip of its head submerged and detect fish as long as it liked without having any issues with breathing. The teeth and jaws are adapted for fish too. And the legs are not inaccurate. It did indeed have short legs. The previous versions of spinosaurus were based entirely on assumptions as no leg bones had ever been discovered. The research team already had more than enough to make them famous so those in the comments that suggest they did this purposely to 'ruin' spinosaurus and become famous, all I can say is that idea is stupid.
