Walk Summary
This Ingleborough walk from Clapham via Ingleborough Cave, Trow Gill, Gaping Gill and Little Ingleborough in the Yorkshire Dales takes approximately 4 hours and 50 minutes. Ingleborough along with Pen-y-ghent and Whernside make up what is known as the 'Yorkshire Three Peaks' and this walk is one of the most popular Yorkshire Dales walks.
We climb out of Clapham passing the entrance to Ingleborough Cave, one of the best show caves in Britain, then on to and through Trow Gill, a narrow, steep-sided limestone gorge, before continuing to Gaping Gill, a 98-metre-deep pothole and one of the most famous caves and largest underground chambers in the UK.
The hike gets steeper and more exposed now as we head up towards Little Ingleborough and then onto Ingleborough itself, which at 724m high, provides views to the Lakeland Fells to the north and as far away as the Snowdonia range to the south. Walking the edges also provides excellent views across the Howgills, Whernside and the Ribblehead Viaduct.
The return route walks across Simon Fell Breast and then through some limestone pavement before walking down Long Lane back into Clapham.

WALKING BOOTS Unless very wet or winter walking, my preference is boots/shoes without ankle support - that's not for everyone though. Having used fell running shoes for many years, I prefer the lightweight feel.
INOV-8 Trailfly Ultra G300 Max: New to me in 2022, now the choice for 70%+ of my walks. Training shoe cushioning, but fellshoe grip and stability - getting many best in test awards.

Glad you enjoyed this Ingleborough walk. I've uploaded another Ingleborough one tonight from Horton in Ribblesdale, where some of the route is the same as this one, and then the next one is a couple of weeks will be the full Yorkshire 3 Peaks walk...

Superb video - very informative and well made 👍 We are in the Dales in a couple of weeks and will try this route rather than our normal route up from Ingleton. Looking forward to it. No mention of Goat Gap Cafe - we like to stop and eat in there just before Ingleton - that said we did have a good meal in the New Inn the last time we were there.

So glad you enjoyed it! I’ll try to add goat gap and country harvest into future ones - as there were a few places already without leaving Clapham, I thought that was enough for there 🙂

Hi Tracey, glad you are enjoying them - always good to get some positive feedback 👍 Quite a few people have contacted to say they have been able to try walks and paths they weren't sure they would be able to do, but have really enjoyed the walks once they knew what to expect!

You have a subscriber 👍, I can honestly say that is one of the best informative videos I have watched, thanks for sharing pal, I have done the Yorkshire 3peaks a few years ago, but never the route you have just shared, definitely on my list soon pal, thanks again

Thanks and welcome onboard…hopefully lots more to come! This is my favourite way to make a circular walk out of Ingleborough, but I will be adding a couple more including the 3 Peaks route over the summer.

Great idea for a video - best video of a walk that I've seen - very explanatory and loved seeing the whole walk in a short time. Never tried this route - always been up the shorter side from the Hill Inn, but will definitely give this one a go now, when we are next there. Will visit your website to get the gpx before we go

Glad you enjoyed - always good to get positive feedback 👍 If you fancy a longer walk including Ingleborough, our Yorkshire 3 Peaks walk video should hopefully be getting uploaded next weekend around the 12-13th August. That will include the full route from Horton in Ribblesdale and take in Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough.

I have walked through the tunnels and have often wondered why they where there. This is copied and pasted. The Clapham tunnels were constructed by the Farrar family to provide a route underneath the Ingleborough Hall Estate connecting the village of Clapham with Fell Lane, which leads along Clapdale.

Thanks 👍 Always good to learn something new…I knew the Farrar family were responsible for the falls and the remodelling of the estate, but didn’t know about the tunnels…

Hi I see there’s lots of cars parked at the side of the road in Clapham, is there free road side parking as well as the car park (which is to pay for)
@walks4all
@walks4all 2 ай бұрын
Yes - the stream side of the road generally has cars parked on it and it is free road side parking. It can get quite busy, quite early at weekends/bank holidays and in the summer.
