Walk Summary
This Ingleborough walk from Horton in Ribblesdale via Sulber, Trow Gill, Gaping Gill and Little Ingleborough in the Yorkshire Dales takes approximately 5 hours and 20 minutes.
We leave Horton in Ribblesdale by passing over the train tracks that form part of the Settle to Carlisle railway and then pass through fields and through some limestone outcrops before heading along the path towards Sulber, which affords views of Ingleborough ahead.
At Sulber, we head left, where shortly over to our left, there are panoramic views over Thieves Moss and Moughton Scars, with Pen-y-Ghent visible on the horizon. Head on to and through Trow Gill, a narrow, steep-sided limestone gorge before arriving at Gaping Gill, a 98-metre deep pothole, and one of the most famous caves and largest underground chambers in the UK.
This is quickly followed by a steep climb up towards Little Ingleborough and then on to the top of Ingleborough itself, which at 724 metres high is the second highest of the Yorkshire Three Peaks behind Whernside.
Ingleborough summit on a clear day provides views to the Lakeland Fells to the north, and as far away as the Snowdonia range to the south. Wandering the edges provides excellent views across to the Howgills, Whernside and the Ribblehead Viaduct.
The return route is across Simon Breast Fell and then through areas of limestone pavement with excellent views of Pen-y-Ghent ahead.

WALKING BOOTS Unless very wet or winter walking, my preference is boots/shoes without ankle support - that's not for everyone though. Having used fell running shoes for many years, I prefer the lightweight feel.
INOV-8 Trailfly Ultra G300 Max: New to me in 2022, now the choice for 60%+ of my walks. Training shoe cushioning, but fellshoe grip and stability over stoney paths - getting many best in test awards.

Loving these videos. Really helps me to see the whole walk before I try it. Wonderful scenery on this Ingleborough walk - I've never tried it from Horton.

Thanks for the positive comments 👍 It is a longer walk from Horton in Ribblesdale than from Clapham, Ingleton or the Hill Inn, but it is a very enjoyable way to climb Ingleborough with great scenery along the way.

Glad you are enjoying them and finding them useful 👍 I do try to film them in the sun so clear and good visibility…downside is with how much it has rained last 5 months, there isn’t many days I can film!

We;ve done this walk and loved it. Have subscribed in support of your channel. We're a small channel too and know how hard it can be to create good content, and get your channel off the ground. Keep up the good work and we wish you success.

Thanks for your positive comments. It is a very enjoyable walk. Along with the similar route up from Clapham, they are probably my favourite routes to get up Ingleborough. I'm away for a few days' walking at the moment with very little reception, but will have a look over at your channel when i'm back...

Great to see another video uploaded! You had glorious weather for this walk, the views are stunning. I don’t think I’ll be able to walk more than one of the three peaks when I’m over there (so much to do, so little time!!!). Do you prefer Ingleborough or Whirnside?

Unfortunately since then, all we seem to have had is rain! Ingleborough is prob my favourite of the two, as quite a few different ways to get up and down…

Stunning video and weather - very easy to follow and just downloaded the gpx from your website. With all this rain how come it’s nearly always sunny on your walks?

Thank you - glad you enjoyed it 👍 I try only to get out on sunny / good visibility days and then the walks are easier to follow / people can see the views…but on the downside, with all this rain we’ve had of late, it means I’ve videoed very little this last 3-4 weeks! Still…more time to write a few more blogs for the walks4all website!

It's well worth trying this route (or the one from Clapham) - it is longer, but I find it a lot more pictureque than from the Ingleton side up via Crina Bottom...that said, I will be adding the route from Ingleton in a few months as going to try to get all the main routes up...

Which of your Ingleborough routes do you prefer, this one or the one from Clapham? I've not done Ingleborough and was going to folllow your Clapham loop, but this one has thrown a spanner in the works!

There’s not much between them to be honest. The one from Horton has the good view of Ingleborough on the way out and Pen-y-Ghent on the return for quite extended periods and has the added views across Moughton, so maybe that just sneaks it. The walks up Ingleborough from Ingleton and the Hill Inn on the far side are ok as well - both shorter and not quite as much to see though. This route off Ingleborough back to Horton is the route followed by the end of the 3 Peaks Walk, which will be the next one I add in a couple of weeks time. Hope you enjoy whichever you choose…
