The opening scene, in my opinion, is the greatest dialog scene in a movie.

Yeah, but it is more or less a monologue. Chris Waltz is doing all the talking. It is an intense interaction, and the guy who plays the French farmer is a great face actor. Editing and camera work is also superb My critique is that it is perhaps too scripted. It is a pretty unnatural interaction, very theatrical, and not the fast-paced natural dialogue that Tarantino is known for.

I don’t know, it’s all a little too smug for me. Tarantino is always so pleased with himself, it comes through in every scene. There is of course a place for this kind of moviemaking, I’m glad that he gets to have fun and we all enjoy it, but when he tries to play things straight, it doesn’t really work: I’m never in the story, I’m always aware that I’m watching a Tarantino movie, wondering what other movies he’s referencing in any given scene etc. He wants us to know how clever he is, and it distracts from the story.

What makes the opening scene even better, that most don't comment on, is that Hans Landa didn't have to do all of that.... he could have just told his crew to shove everyone aside, break everything, and find the family, maybe killing everyone. He decided to go the, kind of "passive aggressive" route, to defeat him in conversation, to exert his strength, to play the game.

@@busimagen It's a pattern of indirectly expressing negative feelings instead of openly addressing them. Like the dude said, he speaks so gentlemanly, so casual, but you know there are violent undertones, he's purposefully building tension, there are unspoken risks, there are hidden meanings in his words. He maintains a passive appearance when his intent is most certainly aggressive. Yes, this is passive-aggressive. I'll admit most people think of the other, more snotty-brat version, yes. But it can be more nuanced than that.

This may sound weird, but you enjoy this movie even more when you're German or Austrian. The attention to detail is insane, so is the dialogue. It's a shame Tom Tykwer doesnt get much credit, he translated the German parts. It was also great to see guys like Christoph Waltz, Daniel Brühl and August Diehl (the other SS officer) on the "big stage". Remember, they were nobodies outside of Germany back then.

The scene where he's imagining getting whipped while the officer explains the drinking game is too funny, and he goes out like a G. He doesn't pop up much in American movies, but it always brings a smile to me when he does.

This is also the only time he has ever worn a nazi uniform on film. In his early days of being an actor ha and a couple other German actors made a personal stance to never wear or a play a nazi in film to 1- show his disgust for for the group and their ideals and 2- to not get typecast as simply a german/nazi actor. He said this was the one exception and it was due specifically to Quentin asking him and his character would be a "nazi" hunter not an actual bad guy.

And sorry for the double comment, but I adore the way you paused to reflect on the nuance of the performances in the opening scene. The way it is done is terrifyingly *normal*, the way the two character interacted; Landa's smile and sense of ease got bigger and bigger until it was literally swallowing the fkn air in LaPedite's lungs, and the micro expression of Landa's charm dropping juxtaposed to LaPedite's internal implosion of emotion that manifests in just uncontrolled quivering and a single damn tear of defeat and guilt and fear, it's the essence of tension in the cinematic form.

Before his role as Hans Landa, Christoph Waltz, an Austrian, had jobs as a stage theater actor in various Austrian and German cities. Later he acted in numerous German television shows. He was making a living, but not the one he aspired to as a young man. He was the last person to audition for the Landa role. If Waltz had not come along, Tarantino has said, he might never have made the film. He was finding out, after many auditions, no one seemed to be able to play the character he had written because of the multiple language fluency required. Waltz's appearance when Tarantino was ready to give up is one of the great miracles of coincidence that sometimes occur in this world.

That opening scene hits me so hard because it reminds me of my grandfather telling me tales of the war. He fled forced factory labor in Germany and hid underneath the floorboards of his fathers (my great-grandfathers) house. He told me how he heard the Nazis ask his father " Well if you are not hiding him beneath this floorboard you would not mind us shooting though it "To which my great-grandfather said. "No, It would change nothing in your day, mission, it would only give me the added labor of having to fix my home". Knowing full wel his son was right there, able to hear him.

Back in the day film had nitrites in it and was highly flammable. In fact it could spontaneity combust just sitting on the shelves for years.

Yeah, film was incredibly dangerous. Old movie theatres had the projector room built as a fire cell. If the film caught fire, the room would be sealed off with heavy steel doors to contain the fire. The machinist would be incinerated. The film could very easily catch fire if there was a mechanical failure of the projector, where the reel stopped, but the light source wasn't turned off instantly. The film could only be exposed to the heat of the light for a second before bursting into flame. Much of the film stock from the early years of cinema have been destroyed, either from entire archives burning down, or it has been deliberately destroyed to prevent accidents.

In the finale, when Aldo and the two other Basterds are pretending to be Italian, Quentin Tarantino originally intended for them to pretend well enough and get by with their facade. But at the table read for the movie with the full cast, Brad Pitt just ended up doing that ridiculous accent as a joke, which made everyone laugh. But then Tarantino couldn’t un-hear it, and it ended up being in the movie. He talks about it on this great interview on the DVD.

This movie is just overflowing with ridiculously tense scenes. For having very little actual "action" it's amazing just how effectively it keeps you on the edge of your seat. Hans Landa is probably Tarantino's greatest creation, and the man has a long history of inventing great characters.

there's not enough credit in the world that can be given to this Bar scene, the brilliance in screen writing is just phenomenal, i mean to us all germans sound the same but the fact that this scene showed us that they have accents and could be identified by their accents was just eye opening and even the hand gestures that gave that British officer away and the tension and the climax was just peak Tarantino, this is hands down his best movie and one of the best movies ever made period

For keeping the screen ‘normal’ and not blurring it or volleying between making it larger and smaller (it’s an irritating thing some other reactors do. A bit disorienting). Whipped cream itself is if made from heavy cream. In WW2 due to dairy rationing across Nazi occupied areas they made it with pork fat, which definitely is not Kosher.

Film used to be made of nitrocellulose, which was extremely flammable. It was reformulated in like the 50's, so now, though not flammable like its predecessor, it's unstable and doesn't hold images well over time, will shrink, etc. We're mostly digital now, though.
