"Why would you leave your gun out there?" The question everyone asks, and which I always feel compelled to explain, because it is definitely confusing the first time you see this. The gun isn't Vincent's. The gun is Marcellus's. Marcellus and Vincent were at Butch's apartment waiting for him or searching the place. Marcellus went out to get them breakfast, which is why Butch runs across him moments later, crossing the street while holding donuts and drinks. Since Marcellus was going to the store, he couldn't very well carry a machine gun in with him, so he left his big gun at the apartment but kept his hand gun on him, hidden under his suit jacket. Vincent stayed behind, but since he's a heroine addict and has bowel problems as a result, he had to hit the bathroom yet again, leaving the apartment unguarded for a few minutes. When someone came in while he was in the bathroom, and he no doubt heard them moving around in the kitchen a few yards away, he figured it was just his boss returned from the store, not Butch returned and making himself some Pop Tarts. Should he have grabbed the gun and brought it with him into the bathroom? Probably, but let's be honest, Vincent wasn't exactly the brightest bulb in the batch.

I just think Vincent is messing up because he is taking heroine. And also by that point he has lost his partner but has forgotten that dangerous situations need two people.

TRIVIA: When Tarantino was still working on this script and thinking about who should play the parts he thought of Travolta for the part of Vincent. Tarantino really didn't have a lot of money at the time despite his prior success with selling the "True Romance" screen play and his film "Reservoir Dogs". So he was living in a small apartment in LA. He called Travolta and asked if he would come to his place and talk about possibly being in the movie. When Travolta got there he realized it was the exact same apartment he lived in back in the 70's when he first moved to LA. Weird.

Also, for the role of Vincent, Tarantino wanted the actor Micheal Madsen to do it. However, Michael Madsen was committed to be in the movie Wyatt Earp with Kevin Costner at the same time so he couldn't do Pulp Fiction. So Tarantino went to Travolta which restarted his career to A List status again. Such a great movie!

@@ninjavigilante5311 Vince dissed Butch because: A) He knew OF Butch and while on Wallace's turf, Vincent saw the "For Sale" sign around the mediocre boxer's neck. Contrary to the "Vega" arrogance of being a friend of the "Big Man". Like brother "Vic" and Joe Kappa. Vic's downfall as a former "Enforcer", was being more 'Psychotic' after Prison, then teaming with Heist men who play by different rules. Vince likely returned from Amsterdam LESS functional and prone to low awareness and time-slippage in key moments. Begins job 1 by rolling a smoke rather than securing all rooms with he and Jules' uncertain target #'s. 🤣 (BATHROOMS!). Regarding "the Diss"...I liken it to Burt Reynolds as 'Paul Crewe' in 'The Longest Yard'. His Sugar Mama dissed him, so he wrecked her car on purpose, (Butch/gf's Honda/Oops!). 2 Officers find him drunk at a bar 😉. The "miniature cop" (Inferiority Complex?) goads Crewe and they fight. t In prison, Guards and Convicts all know OF the Superstar who dissed the game for $$. So...they dissed him. A point-shaving pro QB "For Sale". A double-crossing 'end of line' boxer, acting "For Sale". When Butch stops at the Pawn Shop door to rethink the drama in the basement...that was HIS 'Longest Yard'. For his ancestors and the "Warrior Code"...Butch was redeemed. Unlike in 'No Country for Old Men', when Josh Brolin chose to take water to a thirsty man at the O.K. Corral hours after...., he F**KED UP!!

(That is how drug dealers operate in a pyramid type scheme and prevent people from moving up the line of supply) So they’ve been up doin lines all night and probably stopped just before dawn, got a lil nap, and then went about the day. Thank you. That changes the whole dynamic. That means Travolta was armed, but assumed the casual toaster noise had to be Marcelis, never dreaming it was actually Bitch. And once he walked out, Bitch already got the drop on Vincent. Before he could even think about making a reach for his weapon on him, the smoke detector made that choice for the both of them. Amazing. That fits the situation band characters much more soundly. And why Mercelis only has the handgun on him when shooting at Bitch in public. Finally, 25 years later, yet another cool thing to discover about this MN masterpiece. The film is the gift that keeps on giving.

The least likely place for Butch to go after the fight was back to his apartment. But it couldn’t be entirely ruled out, so Marcellus took that assignment for himself, and also invited John Travolta’s character along so they could catch up (John Travolta’s character had just got back from four years in Amsterdam). John Travolta’s character had to take a shit, so Marcellus went to get pastries and coffee for them. He was so relaxed because there was basically no chance they’d see Butch, and he was looking forward to a nice relaxing morning of hanging out and talking. Unfortunately, Butch’s character was well named-“Butch” means strong and combative; it does not mean “smart.”

22:33 Goes back to the old saying "I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy". He knew he had a chance to leave, and you even see the Tennessee license plate on the wall behind him at the door, but he chose the honorable path, which is also why he ultimately chose the katana sword, the weapon wielded by the Samurai who lived by a code of honor. Though Butch was far from a Samurai, he was more akin to a thief, which goes back to another saying "Honor among thieves". As perverse as this scene is, it's also very deep and philosophical, as is the rest of the film.

When Travolta's character opened that briefcase and you asked what's inside ? 6:22 It's the shiny middle weight championship belt that belong to the boxer (Bruce Willis' character) the guys in the apartment were holding it as collateral waiting for the boxer to "take a dive and throw the match". He didn't do it and now Marsalles wanted it, but those guys wanted to keep it, which is why they got the visit from the hitmen.

John Travolta's breaking role was in "Saturday Night Fever" wich is a movie about Disco, made at the point of the disco era. Beegees super hit "Stayin' alive" is from that movie. Travolta plays this young working class guy who lives for the weekend, when he is king of the dance floor. It is as silly as it sounds, and it made him forever associated with that cheesy role... Until Tarantino made him a star again, fifteen years later, with "Pulp Fiction". It is almost as an ironic joke that he's in this movie, but Tarantino has this thing where he's trolling his audience with actors that are supposedly "out of date", only to throw it back at us with their best performance ever. This was sort of his schtick in his early films, now the stars are lining up to be in his films, but he can still squeese a performance of a lifetime out of someone like DiCaprio, wich is nothing short of amazing. The guy has an eye for talent.

I think the whole point about the hitmen is this film, especially Travolta's, is that they are very incompetent. Vincent shoots Marvin in the face, he disrespects Wolf who is trying to save him and Jules from deep trouble, almost gets the boss's wife OD'd and finally gets killed because he left the gun for Butch to use. Let's face it. Vincent sucks at being a mob hitman.

"Saturday Night Fever", 1976 - that's the big dancing movie he did (though because of that, more came later). This was Travolta's big comeback, and Quentin wanted to see him dance. Not sure how John felt about it - being the "disco king" was probably hard - but it all worked out in the end. One thing about his character - heroin gives you constipation, which explains why he's always in the bathroom.

In case you don’t know it or someone didn’t tell you, the pawn shop scene was inspired by a disturbing thriller in the 70s called “Deliverance”, about a group of friends who are victims of a group of hillbillies in the woods. the case is what what they call a MacGuffin in the movie business. it's basically an object or a place or a thing or a person that we never get to actually see. but the only purpose that it truly serves is to bring the story along. the identity of the object or thing or person is not important. it can also be whatever you want it to be. there have been a lot of theories and Tarantino has said it's all of the things that you say it is.

I believe the rumor on the grapevine is that the ‘gold’ color from the briefcase is from Marcellus Wallace’s soul. He apparently sold his soul. Hence the bandaid on the back of his neck. That’s where is was removed. The movie doesn’t discuss it, but that’s the rumor. His soul is in the briefcase.
