I am BACK! I've been through a lot this past 3 months and I wand to share my experience with my Inguinal Hernia Laparoscopic Robotic Surgery to help others having to go through this or any difficult time.
In this Video I describe what an Inguinal Hernia is, how you can get one and what the options are for a fix. Unfortunately, surgery is the only way to fix a hernia, but you have options.
There are 3 main Surgery's to fix a hernia: #1 - Open Incision. #2 - Laparoscopic. #3 Robotic Laparoscopic. I had the #3 surgery and it was quite fascinating to know a Robot did my Surgery, even though it was controlled by the surgeon.
I have had 2 hernias in my lifetime and now have experienced the open Incision way and the Robotic Laparoscopic way. In this video I share my personal experience with both and the comparisons between the two.
Inguinal Hernia surgery is a major surgery but is is very common and safe. I hope this video helps others to see someone who has been through it twice and what to maybe expect. I give my key advice to help make recovery easier.
Inguinal Hernias can be caused by genetics, Coughing, sneezing or lifting something too heavy just to name the main reasons I have researched.
I hope this video helps, and just remember that YOU WILL MAKE IT THROUGH THIS THOUGH TIME!!! Your health comes first and it is important to take care of yourself even if it means taking a pause from workouts for a while.
Take care and we will see you soon on my next video.
*This Video is not meant to be professional advice, but is rather for entertainment purposes only. Take all of my videos as my own opinion, and at your own risk. You should always consult with a professional before starting any fitness routine, diet, exercises or other health related matters.

The best video I've seen until now regarding inguinal hernia recovery. Thanks for giving me hope. It's been 2 weeks after my laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair and I must say the first few days were awful ( i had cc section with my son and the pain was nothing like the now. 2 weeks after now and I still get the burning sensation, stabbing and some other weird feelings after longer walk, twisting my body or driving my car, cant sleep on my sides or belly only on my back😔 l' ve seen some videos ppl struggling with chronic pain afterwards but your video gives me hope that it wont be my case. Thanks again for sharing this video.

I am sorry your dealing with all that pain but at just two weeks out I am confident in 2 months most of these issues will be resolved 😊Both times I had my surgery it took me about a year to be fully back to myself. Of course most things healed within the first 2 months. I wish you the best with your recovery and feel free to reach out at any point if you have questions.

@@markarnoldsfinance2765 exactly! The surgeon is one of the best in Europe in pure tissue repair. @@markarnoldsfinance2765 PS: basically he used part of my muscle as a self “mesh” implant. He reconstructed the deep inguinal ring (where the hernia was) using the transversus and then reinforced the area with a strip of my oblique, as a two layer repair. He has a track record of under 0.5% recurrence and hes been doing 400 repairs yearly for more than a decade, but i believe this is also because his patients are generally much younger and athletic than average, and these patients (like you) already have a much lower risk of recurrence no matter which technique is used

I had robotic assisted bilateral inguinal hernia repair 3 days ago. Actual surgical time after anesthesia was only under one hour. Only had minimal referred shoulder pain on day 1 post op probably due to the CO2 gas irritation under the diaphragms. Not sure if they decompressed the CO2 distended abdomen at the end of the surgery so that minimal re-absorbable intra-abdominal CO2 gas remains. The abdomen only had minimal bloating. Abdomen wall pain was muted the same evening after surgery due to the abdominal wall anesthesia block that was done which lasted around 12 hours. The next day or two, had a bit more abdomen soreness (as expected) which was quite manageable with only occasional intake of 2 extra strength Tylenol. Never need to take the hydrocodone I was prescribed. Some abdomen areas felt like gas pain. Definitely not a horrific post op experience. Started walking around more soon after the surgery, and went out for some short errands on POD 2. Had started taking stool softeners and fiber for several days before surgery. However, had to strain somewhat for my first bowel movement the next day after surgery (did not have BM the whole day of surgery) which concerned me a bit as I did not want to disrupt the fresh sutures that were inside. Increased dose of stool softener which alleviated any more straining the following day. Abdomen soreness already started to be less on day 3 post op. Overall, so far, my experience has been relatively uneventful.

@@clementwen4973 I am glad to hear you’re doing so well only 3 days after surgery. That means you will heal quick and be back to the things you love before you know it. Had my robotic inguinal surgery 3/1/22. One week post-op and feeling pretty good. What I’ve experienced so far is exactly how you’ve described it. The worst part for me was the the gas, bloating, uncomfortable feeling. I’ve been eating bland, easy digestible food so far, but no doubt, my digestive system is not quite back. There is some pain, getting up from a sitting / lying position. I was surprised to hear you say you couldn’t drive until about 16 days. I have had no trouble driving, short distances, since day 2-3. Hopefully that’s a good sign. I’m beginning to feel the incisions / groin area a bit more as the gas / bloating is subsiding. I’m looking forward to being close to myself after. 4-5 weeks. Thanks for the video.

I believe they told me that at week 6 your surgical area is as strong as it’s gonna be (fully healed) which will be a good feeling when you get there. Wishing you a speedy and 100% recovery! Well I can say that it’s one of the most common surgeries done and make sure your comfortable with your doctor and his history. Make sure you have someone the first couple weeks to help you. Don’t let the fear make you postpone surgery, especially if your having pain and it’s affecting the quality of your life. Overall long term laparoscopic has been easier, just affected my core muscles more than I realized. You will do fine, just accept you will have short term pain but that long term the benefit of having it fixed will provide you more freedom and better quality of life. I wish you the best and am here to answer any questions.

OK, my experience has been a bit different. To preface I am currently 62 and had open surgery on the left side about 30 years ago. At the time, I was told the other side muscles look weak and would probably need it done as well. A few years later open surgery was performed on the right. A couple of years ago, I recognized the beginning of another lump adjacent to one of the previous surgeries. Didn't appear to be a failure, just another location. Went to the doctor for confirmation, and the surgeon recommended robotic laparoscopic surgery. She said while she was in there, she would look around for others that were not outwardly obvious. Earlier this week, the surgery was performed. She corrected another one on the other side as well. Right after the surgery, there is essentially no pain as you are coming off all the anesthesia and meds. My surgery was very early in the day, so I was able to get very short walks around the backyard every few hours. I was told it was important to get up and walking as soon as possible. I continued this for the rest of the day. Durning my first visit to the surgeon, I explained that I am a cyclist and motorcyclist. I was trying to determine when I might expect to be able to return to these two sports (motorcycle is my primary transportation and I mountain bike 3 to 4 days a week). With slight hesitation, she recommended a week off, but said to let the discomfort guide you. I had only taken one day off work and was pretty motivated not to burn up a lot of vacation time, so rode the motorcycle to work the next day. Of course, there was some pain, but I was going to be in pain, no matter where I was. It was a seemingly long workday, but I survived. Did the same the next day, with similar results. The third day was my day off, and quite frankly was relieved. Getting up that morning, actually felt much better. Getting in and out of beds and chairs was easier/ less painful. The thought of sitting in bed for the day watching TV was more pain than I could endure. Decided to try sitting on my bike to see if it was doable. Certainly, no worse than the motorcycle. Spent the day doing short walks around the house and (3) four mile road rides around the neighborhood. At this point, the gas is the worst part. A bit of bloating and pressure. I assume it will pass with time. My goal is to get a few more bike rides in today and continue the progress.

I am glad you are doing good overall! The gas is the worst part in my opinion. I am a pretty thin guy and the doctor told me the thinner one person is the more pain they will have. I had a though week and then it got better from there. My core seemed to be very sore and I slept on a recliner for about 7 nights before I could successfully sleep in the bed somewhat comfortably. I am very active and love my workouts. There was a slow transition into my workouts mainly because my core was the weakest point, but that got progressively better until I finally got to a point I felt I was back to “Normal”. I still get little discomforts here and there but I do intense workouts and assume with probably the scar tissue it’s just is what it is but overall I am back to my old self and it feels good. I wish you a speedy recovery, stay active but step back into your activities slowly would be my only advice. Thanks for sharing your story and I’d love to hear updates if you feel like sharing!

@@dmhollenback190 the CO2 gas pains were the worst part for me. My worst pain lasted for 1 day and then went away over the next the few days. Unfortunately I was told there was nothing you can really do to release the gas pain except let your body absorb and release it. Since you mentioned your pain may involve a nerve, I had a non related nerve issue and the doctor told me to place a warm moist towel over the irritated nerve, so maybe that can help. Good news is that once that gas pain is gone you will get rid of 90% of the pain. I wish you a speedy recovery!

Hi, I am sorry to hear you have a hernia. Just know they are very common among males and it’s a very routine procedure so most surgeons have a lot of experience. The main pain I had initially after surgery for about 24 hours was bloating. If you do laparoscopic there is no real way around this, but laxatives will help when you do eventually need to use the restroom. There will be surgical site pain of course but I think it’s manageable overall. I had a catheter on my first surgery but not on my second. I will give you a tip, before they take you back to surgery say you need to use the bathroom and try to empty out your bladder. Later they told me because I used the restroom right before they took me back, they made note of it and determined a catheter was not needed. Of course every hospital and surgeon are different but that’s what happened for me and how I avoided the second one.

I had an inguinal hernia repair via robotic laparoscopic surgery 11 days ago. I have to say that I until now I have felt very little discomfort from it. In fact if it wasn't for the three lapo scars and that fact that my hernia has gone, I wouldn't have know it had been done. 11/12 days later I am getting some mild discomfort near the right most lapo scar which goes across to my right hip bone. Unfortunately I went into urinary retention as a result of the General Anaesthetic, which is not uncommon. To exacerbate it further I had an enlarged prostate before the surgery. This has resulted in my not being able to pee and have to have a catheter inserted when I was sent home. Takes a while getting used to. Didn't help that I got a UTI because of the catheter. It's still in now with a trial without catheter taking place in 8 days. To be honest, the issue with my UTI and catheter has been far more uncomfortable than the operation itself.

I have had open and robotic repairs. The open was uneventful, and I was working and driving on day three. Some mobility issues, having to do some movements slowly. Robotic was a nightmare. The pain from the CO2 was excruciating. I had a horrible sore throat from intubation, and even lost my voice for a day. Open left me with a 3 inch scar, but so far down on my groin, only my doctor would see it. With the robotic I have 4 ugly scars on my stomach. I regret having the robotic surgery. I am very disappointed. For me, I don't see any benefits of robotic hernia repair, it costs more, takes longer, exposes you to more anesthesia, requires intubation, all in all for me for this issue, robotic was not the way to go. I do see many situations where robotic surgery would be the best option. My suggestion is to do your own homework and research, and ask lots of questions because the industry will, for whatever reason force robotic surgery on the patient, like a used car salesman. Open surgery was much better in my personal experience. 😊

Thanks for sharing your story and I am sorry to hear about the negative experience with robotic surgery. The CO2 was one of the worst parts for me! It’s interesting because I had 3 small incisions for mine, not 4. I think a lot depends on the surgeon and their method. I questioned the hell out of my surgeon as I was very nervous to go robotic (more risks like you said). He answered all my questions and took his time with me, which I appreciated and gave me some confidence. So I always tell people to write down and ask all your questions at your appointment as it’s your body and you need to make sure you are confident going through with the option that is suggested. I also think since it was my second hernia, robotic is preferred. Regardless, I have heard many horror stories with robotic surgery but also lots of successes. It’s a newer technology and one that many may want to consider the alternative until it’s more advanced and regularly used. I hope you have fully recovered and have no more hernias!

I feel EXACTLY the same way about laparoscopic surgery, I had an open repair 8 yrs ago and it went very well, quick healing, no reoccurrence, just had the other side done 3 weeks ago robotically and I regret it every day, my surgeon didn't push me but strongly suggested it, hind sight being 20/20 it seems absurd to have holes poked though your abdominal wall (technically is a small hernia, right?) and a repair made on the inside of your abdomen, if something goes wrong now the problem is inside! And the big one for me is the abdomen inflation, I feel like there's still something wrong inside me as a result of that, three weeks out now and still extremely bloated, eating anything is extremely uncomfortable, I guess the only positive is I'm losing weight, 20 lbs in 3 weeks!

Did they explain about the risk of incissional hernia with the laproscopic surgery? The three incisions they place in the abdominal wall cut through the muscle then through the facia which then leaves and open door to future hernias. The facia cannot heal which is why we got a hernia to begin with. They said we will have a 20% loss in abdominal wall strength compared to someone who never had abdominal incisions Surgeons tend not to tell patients this vital information unfortunately. Why did your open surgery take a year to heal was it infection?

I did ask my surgeon about incisional hernias and he told me of all his patients over the years he never had some one communicate to him they had one from the surgery so that calmed my fears there. My 3 incisions were pretty high imo and I wonder if he did that due to my concerns. I did stress each time I am very active and the surgeon who did my open one said he made it very “tight” so I would not get a recurrence, whatever that means. A lot of my issues was nerve damage, is what they determined so it was painful but eventually went away but it took forever. Hope this helped.

I do think they can be more transparent and it’s really up to the patient to ask all the questions. Also, regarding the core strength, I am actually at my strongest core strength ever right now, but that is due to my focus on fitness. So I obviously could not compare to where I could be without the surgery but with a focus on my workouts I’ve reached my goals, so it is possible but was a challenge to get there.

@@markarnoldsfinance2765 I specifically asked my surgeon about this issue He simply said I could go back to my workout without any concern. What he didn't tell me in his reply was the 20% strength loss of the abdominal wall I unfortunately found this out after the surgery The crucial factor is not lifting heavy objects or straining the abs for six weeks Hopefully this is a rare occurrence and we will be ok

@@bluewave7120It’s been a month and a half since my bilateral inguinal hernia surgery. First four weeks my chest shoulders and back were killing me, from what I was told and had figured was combination of the gas pains and from all the strong medicine, my esophagus was hurting bad. So I thought it was my heart or my lungs , I took all tests needed but all was good. Now my testes hurt and the left side that the biggest hernia was operated hurts and the pain goes down to the groin inductor and testes. So I’m wondering if it’s damaged nerves? Does this sound familiar? And I’m doing an ultra sound today to check testes and surgery area.

Please On a scale of 1-10 how painful was the first 3 days?

Well, I would say an 8/10. Of course that’s subjective and a lot depends on The person and how much work needs to be done by the surgeon. For me it was less about the pain and more about the discomfort as you don’t realize how much you utilize your core for and you will be reminded of that often with this surgery. Luckily each week gets significantly better!

I just had double hernia surgery June 28. I am 60 years old. It was laparscopic robotic surgery done by a surgeon with a lot of experience (thousands of surgeries). The pain was the worst for the first 3 days and I took several codone pills they gave me. After that it got better each day. I quit the codone and took advil after 3 days and after 1 week I quit the painkillers all together. I will admit I underestimated the pain threshold. I think like he said in the video some of it is the gas getting absorbed into the intestines. July 4th we went to a fireworks show and walked around a boardwalk for several hours. That was day 6 after the surgery, and I was in quite a bit of pain that night. I had to take advil again. So anyway for the first 3 days expect 7-8 pain. After that it slowly drops to a 2-3. Today is day 9 after my surgery and I am getting around great. I still have pain in the groin area if I strain or twist around but it is definitely getting better. I am not taking any painkillers at all. It's bad but not REAL bad. Good luck!

@@markarnoldsfinance2765 Thanks for the encouragement and for putting up the video. I was curious how other guys did after the surgery. I forgot to mention peeing after I got home from the hospital. OMG it felt like I was pissing razor blades and fire. Must have been from the catheter. Anyway you described it pretty well. Hope you are back to the gym at full speed. That is my goal as well.

@@dirtwhisperer658 yeah that is the catheter for sure. I am back to working out and overall am back to my old self. Sometimes I feel some tension in the area but that’s probably due to mesh being there and not a “normal” part of the body.
