I had a project once where all I had to do was drill a variety of holes, some with counter-bores, into a piece of wood and then make a mirror image piece for the other side. After hours of confusion I ended up with two good parts and 3 scrapped parts. Some days it can be a real battle lol.

When I was a apprentice, I made one just like that. The only problem and always would roll off onto the floor. So the second one I made up all the hex stock and that stop it from rolling around. Then on the plunger, I put grooves quarter inch apart, so I could tell the depth of the tap. As always great project. I think you’re gonna need a bigger box.

Wonderful tool, beautifully made. My grandpa was an engineer and tool and die maker. He said "Feel free to ignore the problem now. It won't ignore you later." I have often remembered this too late. My wife and I completely restored our 22 room 19th century abbey that would become our home. It took 15 years and in the process, a number of times I saw something that needed to be addressed, but I didn't have time, didn't want to bother, didn't think it mattered. Some of those things never got corrected and still irritate me. I'm too old to start correcting them now, so if they ever do get corrected it will be by someone else. Thanks much for this excellent video. In learning from your mistakes you are helping others avoid making them. That is a true gift.

Great video, thanks for sharing! In our experience, drilling a long hole with a twist drill will always wander somewhat even if you set up your tailstock super carefully and use a brand new high-quality drill bit, so boring is a must. If you can't bore the whole length, it helps significantly if you just bore the first bit so the flutes of the drill bit are a nice fit to help guide the drill bit the rest of the way.

In a pinch, I’ll use a spring impact marking punch as the tap follower. I do have a mounted tap wrench, but I almost always power tap. But then again I’m usually machining more forgiving materials; also I almost never use small taps or threads that have a tendency to have taps break more.

I have a jewelers benchtop laser. If I break a tap, I can use it to either blow a hole in the tap or weld something to it so that I can extract it. I’ve also repaired a hole that didn’t need much strength by drilling way large then press fitting a tube into the hole and then laser welding the seams and finishing the hole to correct size. Smallest focal point is listed at 0.2mm, so I can go after small drill bits too. This laser is probably my favorite benchtop tool, when I got it I didn’t know just how much utility it would have. I can weld, “cut” (more like incrementally vaporize material in a line), solder, ablate coatings, and so much more. Being clever with it has seriously increased my capabilities and saved so much time on a couple of parts that I messed up. Freaking love this laser.

Hey man, it's your friendly tool maker here again. Lots of drills are actually bent from the manufacturer and will cause the hole to walk off center when drilling in a lathe or any time the drill is stationary and the work is moving. Bent drills don't seem to be a problem on mills or any operators where the drill is spinning and the work is stationary. It's a total pain in the ass when I have to make step drills out of supplied drills from companies who don't care about their quality. It happens way more than you know... 😢
@erikkayV
@erikkayV Жыл бұрын
Just wanted to let you know, and I find that even older experienced machinists sometimes don't know this but, in commercial tap followers you can actually flip the 60 degree plunger upside down and on the back is a matching cup so that you can follow small diameter taps that only have the point without the use of a dimpled tap wrench. Something to think about.
@RobB_VK6ES
@RobB_VK6ES Жыл бұрын
Don't back off the tap so often. If the cutting forces are Ok keep cutting. Reversing too often increases the dulling of the cutting edges. Any time you need to remove a significant proportion of the material particularly with combined ext and int details it is best to rough out the entire profile say 1mm over / undersize then come back and finish. Roughing it out like this allows the stock to relax from the previous stressed state and any further distortion should be minimal.

Stefan Gotteswinter, Joe Pie & That Lazy Machinist are great teachers of the craft. They all explain "WHY" not just repeating "old wives'" methods. Thank you for the high quality videos. 100 years ago, I made drawings for the professor's papers, to help pay my way. All done in India ink, mostly cartography. Brandon, really nice work. One wish; you made the body out of free machining steel which is easy to machine. The downside is that its soft and will show war wounds quite fast. How about a surface treatment like nitride or carbonizing (?) to make a hard shell on the tool and grind it to size eventually (I'm not sure if a nitride treatment changes the geometry) Or a new, hardened one. Ground to size would make a cool video too 🙃. Thank you for sharing your work. All the best, Job

Love this content bro.. I watch This Old Tony and Wonky's workshop also and I have to say it's awesome to watch ppl use Lathes & millings machines to make tools for their shops.. I think this type of skill is being lost today so it's bloody awesome to see it alive and well on YT.. I have a small workshop and I would love to get a lathe but I haven't used one since Metalwork classes in school and even then we never got to spend huge amounts of time on them. Are there any courses I could look to take to become proficient in the use of lathes and Milling machines? I don't have the engineering background u obviously have my bro but I really want to learn these machines correctly so when I finally get one or both I am not letting them gather dust bcos I don't know what I'm doing. I guess I should search online/google but what would the search be centering on if u don't mind me asking u? Thanks for another brilliant video my friend. Salute to ur Grandpa ?? for having a great selection of tooling. What is it with the older generation and their ability to keep stuff for years. I'm 50 now and I've started collecting bits and bobs of machines in boxes. I don't throw away any motors from machines. I take the machine apart and take the motors and any other salvageable parts and keep boxes of them in my home shop. My shop is my garage. It's a one car garage 16'X10' approx. It's really small and I need to be better at storage which is shocking atm. LOL I guess I could put the storage higher up on the walls and keep floor space at a premium but I'm weary of somebody walking around the shop and a load of shelving falling on them bcos I didn't fasten the shelving to the wall well enough. It'd be my bad luck alright..LOL Anyways I better stop now bcos I need to go to work. Again thanks for the brilliant content from all u great guys on YT. U make it bearable on here these days bcos there's a lot of tosh about this medium nowadays. I've always loved watching ppl use their hands to make stuff whatever that may be. The skills involved are immense. Salute from Dublin IRELAND!

A quick way to sweep in a drill (this is how we do it in a gang tool CNC lathe where we don't have a set X position) is to stick your dial indicator on the workpiece in the spindle (or in the spindle directly if you're not mid-process like this) and coaxially indicate the tool or a dowel in the holder. Super quick and accurate.

I made a spring loaded die follower for my lathe since it doesn't have the capability of turning threads. It made all the difference; now it's easier, & in larger diameters, possible. Was the non-concentricity in attempt #3 a functional or an esthetic problem? I can't see it being functional, but it might be a sitch where you don't discover the problem until it becomes a problem. I had a rear disk brake conversion kit project about 10 years ago which needed very accurate, (to 90⁰), threaded holes. Not having a mill, I was researching a solution, & learned about tappers. Curious about used availibilty, I jumped on eBay 10 minutes after someone posted a Ridgid tapper for $50. Used once 15 yrs prior, it'd held down a shelf most of it's life. Grabbed it while I could, & glad I did. Dedicated my drill press to it as an excuse to get a better one. Never have regretted it. Five+ years later, found myself needing accurate 90⁰ threaded holes, again, but on a piece too large for a DP. Got creative & turned an extra $5 garage sale find, Porta Align into a hand tapper. A couple hours & $20 of scrap material & I had a very accurate drill AND tap tool. The $300 store bought unit doesn't have the dual function ability since it won't hold drill bits or chuck in a drill. Keep your eyes open for a $5 garage sale Porta Align & make yourself one, or make one from scratch; if you ever need 42, accurate to 90⁰ 3/8-16 holes in a 3 x 4 ft sheet of 0.50" 6061, you'll be glad you did! LOL GeoD

It's a beautiful tool, excellently explained. I probably would have shrugged at the first mistake, though, and asked "How much difference will it make in the actual tapping of a hole? ANYTHING is a big improvement over free-handing it. Carry on."

Coming from two wildly differing backgrounds (construction and the USAF) I can speak from experience that complacency kills. Never get comfortable to the point you "expect" anything from your day to day life. Always be on your toes. It'll keep you from falling off of things, and keep your from getting squished by falling things.

Hi: a source for the center point rod is the hardened, chromed rod for an old Mack diesel injector. They will never wear out when used as a tap follower. They also work as a center point for layout and marking on soft metals.

There is so much conveyed in this episode it's difficult to make comment. Cross checking of datum surfaces and indexing, with good tooling and lubrication practices. You Sir, need an apprentice or two in your shop. Perhaps they're already there😊

For want of a CNC lathe, I once used a Trak DPM3 with lathe tooling in the vise just like you did. My supervisor thought I was nuts, but couldn't argue with the results; I finished what was supposed to be a three-day job on the manual lathe, in four hours.

That's the most booboos I've ever seen in a YT video. I respect that. I have a lathe, Horrible Freight Chinese lathe from 20 years ago when they sold metal lathes. I have had simple projects that went like this one w more scrap parts than keepers. Part of being human. Nice to see them shown and not edited out.

I haven’t even finished watching this yet, and I had to comment. Just got to the part where you mention the “Morse Taper”, and it reminded me of the grandfather I barely knew and inherited little because so was I when he passed. At this moment I am unsure of the dates, but he worked his way up from sweeping the floor in Morse Twist Drill and Machine Company to be the president of the company in the 60’s and possibly early 70’s. So now I’ve spent the last three hours looking up facts about tooling and the history of New Bedford and such (I’m not a machinist fyi). So side project 1 for tomorrow, is to talk to my 80 y/o father and get more information about a man I have scant memories of. But now back to finishing this video since I can’t sleep at this point until I do, three hours later than I planned on. I have few things from his time there, an index of drill bits, a tap set, and not much else. Much my father had was damaged in a flood, and I assume is gone. Keep making these videos, it is fantastic watching you make such fine things and also remain entertaining.

This might sound a little mean, but I am looking forward to the episode where you need to make a new "Box of Shame" to accommodate everything that cannot fit in the current one. Otherwise, I love your straight forward and honest videos. Too many other folks will only show all the perfect things they've done. But you are willing to let all of us learn with you. Thank you so much!

I would have thought that an “expert” would get his work done correctly first time around. Not so, an expert persists through failure to produce a perfect result in the end. No shame in interim mis-steps. Magnificent work. That’s a large looking lathe you are doing all this delicate work on. What size is its bore? I used to think delicate work equals a small lathe, but watching you it does not seem to be the case. Cheers.

It is certainly nice to have a part with no runout, but honestly, on a tap follower as this, a 10 thou runout is not really going to influence the threads to the extent that you would end up with truncated threads being formed. During my apprenticeship days at BOSCH India as a fitter, my instructors would always tell - its good to be accurate in the part you produce, but is equally important to know if extreme accuracy on a particular job justifies the effort, which includes time, money and energy put into achieving it.

I watched a This Old Tony video about knurling. In his opinion the diameter for knurling can be anything. With every diameter the knurling sometimes works, sometimes not. He also said that some guy has knurled a taper which would indicate strongly that the diameter doesn't have to be a specific one

One of these days, I might tell my boss that it has been a little while since I had a side project and make one of these. I could order one but, meh. But seriously. This makes me curious about my vertical cnc lathe. This makes me want to be able to use your approach and see if I can use Solidworks and program my machines to cut like that, repeatedly. I love outside the box approached.

Hope you all learned valuable lesson -never trust a twist drill to make perfect holes ! Unless you are using gun drills or boring bar it will never be parallel with outer surface. However if its just one hole not like this one then you can ream it to size,put it between centers by using existing holes and turn outside diameter to be parallel.
@DavidHerscher
@DavidHerscher Жыл бұрын
Take the bulk of your material off the outside. Then drill your hole. Take out of collet and put between centers using the holes at either end. Finish your outside surfaces. Your ID and OD should now be concentric AF brah.
@shutupmeg176
@shutupmeg176 Жыл бұрын
For the first component, Id do things a little differently. First would be to face and centre drill the far end of the part. Then I would do my drilling first, this would give more material surrounding the hole and would prevent you from overheating the part (you could see the brown heat treatment colours creeping in because of the excess heat). Also, you should drop the speed a fair bit for drilling those sizes of drill, especially in a harder and less thermally conductive material like most tool steels. That goes triple for a reaming operation, because reamers arnt cheap! Then, with the holes done, Id put a small boring bar in and bore a 30deg champfer, which will then be suitable for supporting with a live centre. After that, extend the part out of the chuck, turn all of the outer features and then part off. This would give you less drama with heat problems and more of a chance of the central hole being concentric to the outer features. Lovely little project though, well done!
