Initial thoughts Stihl MS361

All the non strato last generation stihls are becoming increasingly popular, the 260, 361, 440, 461, it seems now that stihl doesn't make them anymore people realize how good they were. As the saying goes "you don't know how good you have it until it's gone."

Non strato… hmmm idk… my 261 kicks asz and people on the tubes running stupid long (read VERY long) 28-32” bars on them.. yeah poor rings tho.. So are/aren’t the bore and strokes the same? What about the bolt patterns? Can you put the old “0” jugs on new saws?? Stock, the 362’s aren’t impressing me, and a lot of people on the tubes.. but I did run a guys 036 PRO and that thing was a beast! Had an EXCELLENT power to what weight? Ratio.. ran into a toasted roached 362 no-pro at a pawn shop guy wanted 5 bills… I left it there. Jugs were just too high.. also, I think all the 0 saws were made in Germany.

I got a used 361 in 2012 and have been cutting firewood with it every year since. It's never required more than regular maintenance. They're a great, all-around saw.

The 361 has the best throttle response of any saw I've ran. Very snappy and a great thinning saw.

Go buy one of there cars. You’ll love it right until you gotta fix it yourself or pay someone to fix it. They can take the simplest thing and make it extremely complex. Engineer is just a title that most paid for. I have zero respect for anyone’s title especially those engineers that design shit that is impossible to build. On the flip side though we need guys like that because there the ones that come up with ideas that are so stupid there genius.

My first chainsaw was a ms361, bought it brand new, the choice was between a 359 and the 361 and the 361 just felt better to me. I am not a pro, just used it to cut a tandem load of maple a year. It has never caused me an issue and it’s in great shape. Opening the muffler and trimming the limiter caps will wake the saw up quite substantially. Now I have more acreage and I am cutting bigger trees so I have been using a 2171 and ported 365’s. the 361 lives on the shelf in my basement…

It makes sense for Stihl to leave a lot on the table especially with their pro saws. They are beat on day in and day out for much longer intervals.

I believe the 361 has the bigger 460 crankcase bearings in them..🤔

I only run a 20" bar on mine and it more than handled the Pines that I needed to cut when I was relying on firewood, for heating and selling and any big wood I cut was done with my MS460. The only comparable saw that I have is a rebuilt Husqvarna 162SE and the 361 out cuts it. I was by no means ever a pro, just a firewood guy and it fit the bill nicely...I also got mine for around $100 because it was "blown" and had a shop tag on it dated 7 years prior so it was a project saw, well, it wasn't much of a project as the problem was the decompression valve was pushed in!

I've enjoyed watching your videos.... I do have to say that i Really Like plastic top handles. The first advantage is they don't freeze your hands as fast as aluminum, which is like sitting on a bleacher and freezing your n--ts off (ha) A friend offered me a nearly new 361 at a steal, but I turned it down in favor of the 60cc Echo 600p I already had. If i was using it professionally, for the weight savings it would have made sense. But just starting the thing was a process.. The echo starts easy No Matter What. Anyway, After Echo came out with the 600p, everyone bit*hed about the plastic handel. So when came out with the upgraded 620p it had the aluminum handle. If I ever get a 620p, I will for sure be swapping out the handle for my plastic one 💪 Just my $.o2, thnx for the reviews 😉

Btw, running side by side i didn't notice a real power difference. The stihl ran faster the Echo had the torque. The weight loss was what i noticed. Maybe i should've taken it 🤔

If your hands get cold then heated handles are a must.

I've had a 361 since 2009 purchased for $400! 2006 model. Came with a 25" bar. I use a .063 gaugel full skip chain. I feel like it's the only saw I need.

Enjoyed the video from the start. It will be interesting . I have 2 clean, decent saws missing a few intake parts etc. Everything else looks great on them. Why? IDK. I'll get to them sometime. Excided to see how you make out. Thanks.

The 361 has a really nice cylinder design. Quad loop transfers, nice intake and exhaust ports. I got an eye out for one, my 036 pro is a great runner in the meantime though.

I hate those 361 mufflers with a passion. Hands down one the worst designed and most restrictive mufflers made. They suck to modify. Great saw other wise

They will not hang with a stock Husky 562, I've ran both side by side in oak and walnut.

Im glad i watched your other video's and got the echo 620p for the money stock to stock. Im on the west coast and i like that its a lot lighter than my ms440. The 620 i got with a 27" and its ok buried but i got it to spend more time standing. I plan to muffler mod it but not until it runs a few more tanks.

interesting to see you sponsored by / using Longer gear, clever marketing name for sure. Their bars are good, I used their chain first about 15 years ago, the tooth profile was very tall compared to the big brands, and as you say, a bit all over the shop straight out of the box, with many hardened rakers, I hope they get the quality control dialled in a bit tighter. Great price point though, especially if you're not a pro. Look forward to seeing the 361 built up.

I have been watching some of the video clips of TAZAPALOOZA and noticed the majority of saws there were Husky's. Does this mean that we are smarter than the rest of the country here in the PNW as it pertains to the best saws? Just kidding. Sounds like it’s running a touch fat also seems like that chain ant much to brag about? But I feel like it could run like a hot saw and you’d say eh it’s ok. Lol it’s obvious you don’t like Stihl. I’ve had both the early generation husky’s auto tunes broke me from using husky and there heavy. I’ll take two seconds longer in a cut all day long vs carrying a pound / pound n half heavier saw. Also husky warranty isn’t worth squat. The husky 372 / 395 s good saws. Got a two auto tunes now with bad crank bearings and seals. Got Stihl saws still running. I do like husky but just not Ben a good saws for us.

I think his point is that stihl lovers brag about them being the best and fastest and longest lasting saws ever made. That's just not true. As a mechanic, I've worked on just about brand and model of most saws out there. Every single one of them have their issues and most of them have their strong points. I will say the stihl saws generally last longer without issues than husky for sure. I will say echo saws rarely ever fail from the normal or pro user I've serviced. Almost everything that I've seen fail on those is point blank worn out parts. But just like every brand they also have their weaknesses. They are underpowered out of the box for damn sure and husky and stihl spank echo in stock form on almost every level. Not by a lot, but enough to stay ahead. The echos just always stay reliable and start and run without issues. I think that's mostly because they're so simple in design compared to the newer electronic models.

Hmmm... literally THOUSANDS of people care what I think. Thousands. How many folks care what you think? 🤔 The MS361 has long been considered among the very best 60cc saws. And at 12.3 pounds, it is far from a "heavy old saw".
