once I get my CNC machine built I could do this. 3d print a part with loose tolarances then cnc it to correct tolarances and presto. I already have experience as a injection mold tool machinist. Designing a mold would be a peice of cake. but of course i can just use aluminum or nylon bricks, but that cost more to mess up with.

@SaltyBrains well cost of making of alu mold cost nice $,and if u make change in design u will pay for 2 or so .. so to make small 1cm2 mold for 1 part u need 2-300$ in cad/cam tooling time plus small q of alu bill = u waste 5-800$ if u need to change something vs 20$ for plastic

One of my acquaintances makes mold inserts using a similar process. A 3D printed "master" gets cast in melted nylon or HDPE and then he machines it down from there to get it mold ready. Once he gets everything up to his standards, he whips out the aluminum for a real try. Once it's all done, he melts down the plastic for the next job.

What material is the plastic mold made of? Not the part, but the green mold itself?
@runcycleskixc6 жыл бұрын
What's the plastic -- is it polypro? Still... a 50% reduction is merely a two-fold reduction. A 10-fold reduction, and I would consider it. At just 2x the cost, I'd rather have a stainless steel mold which is inert, can be machined at 10 micron precision, and melts at 1500C over a plastic of undisclosed composition, 50 micron precision at best, and 250C melting point.

@ojbeez52605 жыл бұрын
2 fold reduction is half price!! Imagine if you have lots of parts. If you get a problem you have to pay once more. Also the lead-in time is much shorter...2-3 days instead up to 2-3 months. Most parts do not need ultra-high precision. Depends on what you want...it's not 100% injection moulded perfection but it's very very close, much faster lead-in and 50% of price. It all depends if that would tip the balance for you..it may do for a lot of people...that's why there is a market for it..just saying.

@darkshadowsx59496 жыл бұрын
it's about as useful as a mold made of butter. silicone expands under pressure of the injected plastic resulting in uncontrollable tolerance loss issues. even with a metal shell. silicone is great for no pressure molding like resin casting. fyi i spent time as a injection mold tool machinist.

Hello, i would like to know how much does it cost to make a mass production of a laptop frame, like for example clevo p870. you said hundred of thousand for one metalic mold, is that that high for just cnc on a bloc?
@aleksandersuur94756 жыл бұрын
If you were simply pricing cnc milling a block of aluminium it would be pretty ridiculous pricing. But molds are nowhere near that simple. You have rectangular undercuts, you need superb surface finish and mating surface flatness, there are bunch of moving parts for election pins and undercuts. You'll end up doing lots of EDM and flatness grinding to get to the end result. Never mind that you need to design it all, it's not exactly simple mechanics. So yeah, once you add it all up you can indeed easily end up in the hundreds of thousands price range for the one mold, especially if you need to do several trial and error iterations to get perfect results.
@J23Ochs4 жыл бұрын
My professord told us prices starting by 10k for very small and cheap molds, 30k for better ones (still small, like mobile Phone Backcover). The top end is open. Depends very much on surface quality, lifetime, cycletime or numer of slides.

Hello! Could you tell me what material was used to make the mold? Since ABS is molded quite hot i cant find a suitable material to withstand it. Thank you!
@san87eee9 жыл бұрын
I think thermoset plastics may be used if you have any idea please let me know.
@Tobi3939 жыл бұрын
+Sankar S I've since figured out that the mold is most likely made out of "Digital ABS". This is, however, nothing like the ABS used in FDM 3D printers since it is a duroplast instead of a thermoplastic and can withstand more heat. As for the mold application, normal thermoplastic ABS is usually injected and should be no Problem. If you're experimenting, PLA is easier to injection mold at lower temperatures than ABS and can be injected in a Nylon FDM printed mold. Greetings!

It seems to be a UV-cured chemical polymer with some high-temperature resilience. If you do a web search for their "PolyJet" system, you can find a working link to a request form for a technical application guide. If I share the link here, KZbin will censor the comment for spam. At any rate, the manufacturer doesn't specify material types on their information page; you must request the technical application guide, which discusses the use of a variety of printing materials.

@Chocolatchips3 жыл бұрын
@@BB-bs7hm Hi! Well, it's a big investment, even if you're just planning to pay someone else to do the job, so the simple answer isn't a good answer. There's a formula for answering your question, and you can undoubtedly find calculators online. In your description here, you would have needed to include either the cavity volume or the material being used (such as polystyrene) because volume can be calculated using the weight of the application's material. A mold flow design textbook would be a very good idea. I recommend, "Plastic Part Design for Injection Molding: An Introduction", by Robert A. Malloy. I see a copy on ebay for about $60 right now.

Hussein Kray - The advantage is to manufacture small amounts of a part for a low price. The break even point of a CNC manufactured mold out of metal is way higher than a printed mold. Also the manufacturing time of a printed mold is way shorter, so you can start to produce earlier.

You still need a mold tooling designer to design the tool(nest the part cavity, figure out mold flow and cavity numbers, draw gates, cooling chambers, ejector pin locations, cav number engraving, size the steel mold base,....etc. ). Then instead of machining from aluminum, hard steel or cutting an EDM electrode he will just 3D print it in a few days vs. 4-8 wks lead time. Just don't expect million shot guarantee for real mass production. Keep in mind if this is a prototype tool when transitioning to a hard tool it's like starting over, again.
