Absolutely fabulous colour and shading, Stephen! Thank you for the great review.

Very nice shading. I love inks with nice shading, although they are often not very suited for writing documents at work or formal things in general. They are great for writing letters though or just writing your diary or whatever makes you happy. Although orange would not be my first choice, this particular one is very attractive and legible. I have no Noodler's ink yet, but these guys produce some great colors, designed for many different occasions, so I will soon give them a try.

after using it for a while, I finally understand why this ink is beautiful. even on cheaper copier paper, just before the ink absorbed into the fiber, the shading that it created is so beautiful! love.

Fellow pen enthusiasts -- help! How does this 'Apache Sunset' compare to Pilot Iroshizuku 'Yu-yake' orange ink? Thanks in advance.
@terrmaci5649 жыл бұрын
+Cactaceae33 Shading. Yu-yake does not have that much of shading comparing to Apache Sunset.

Definitely, absolutely MUST HAVE this Apache Sunset! Great review and liked your page on fpgeeks.com where you showed a close-up of the samples you wrote here.

If there's one ink to have in a collection, this is the ink! Great review.

Thank you for this review from last year. I was wondering what ink would look good inside a Pelikan 400 brown/tortoise and this solved the problem . Just ordered from Goulet!

Wonderful saffron color ink.

Hello Stephen. Question. Is there a big difference between the Apache Sunset and the Montblanc Leonardo Da Vinci Red Chalk? I've never tried the Apache Sunset, but it looks like it's almost the same color.
@michaeljelliot9 жыл бұрын
If you normally use a medium nib would you buy a broad just to get the shading effect of this ink and others. In other words buy a broad in the hopes that you can adjust to achieve the shading.

I find that the longer i leave AS in a pen, the slower it dries when i write with it. Or it could be the humidity of a SE Asia. What do you think of this?
@sbrebrown11 жыл бұрын
I've never experienced that.

This march, one of my friend is coming to India from USA, I will ask him to bring this ink for me. I believe this ink would work well with my eye dropper converted flair Inky Pen. I have one more inexpensive pen worth Rs 5 (0.1 Dollars) which is a demonstrator, This Ink would look sweet in that pen as well. The finnest part of any Noodlers ink, is that its a happy mans ink, its relatively inexpensive and almost anyone can afford it. Great work Doc.

What ink brands would you recommend for high end pens like Visconti? Watermam, Diamine, J Herbin? Others?

i must have gotten a bad bottle as mine is more yellow than anything.
@RezzaCustodioSoriano7 жыл бұрын
Ditto here. I'm just getting ever so slight hints of orange, but mostly yellows! :( I've used it with a Parker Sonnet M nib, and a cheap china pen with a 1.1 italic stub... The predominant yellow is quite disappointing. So is it a fluke or what?
@Crysis4826 жыл бұрын
It's still nothing but yellow. Do not purchase it anymore, they've done something to the formula and ruined what was once a beautiful ink.

Would you use Apache Sunset in your Opera Elements or Opera Crystal (I'm guessing not), how about in a Lamy Safari or Konrad Flex? I'd like to hear your thoughts on this.
@margueritebrainerd868 жыл бұрын
Well, I got my Apache Sunset after both you and Mr. Goulet raved about it. But,alas, I just cannot find a pen that it writes well in. Definitely not a Fine nib pen (Lamy) and then tried it out in Noodler's Flex nib pen. But I cannot get the hang of using the Flex nib. So, tried it out in Lamy Safari Broad nib, and still having a tough time writing with this ink. It just doesn't want to play nice with me. But, golly, I love this color!

+C.E. Parks I shall IF I think about it. I really enjoy using different inks and pens. Usually use Fine points, a very few Extra Fine, and some Pilot Prera

+C.E. Parks .....Pilot Prera CM nibs which they say are 1.1 calligraphy. I like these but not all the time.

I bought this ink based on a great review and have to say I hate it. I tried it in five fountain pens and it is a dry ink. I replaced with Namiki ink just to see if it was the pens or the ink and it was the ink. Not happy with it. Namibia was so much better. Just tossing the Apache Sunset. Hope other Noodler's Ink perform better.
@738polarbear5 жыл бұрын
I tried my bottle in a dozen of my pens . its as dry as sand . As soon as I changed to any other ink the 12 pens wrote wetly .My bottle is garbage . i got it from Goulet but it is not Goulet's fault . too much inconsistency in Noodlers. Nathan Tardif knows his stuff but some of his formulas really suck.
@pubu201012 жыл бұрын
Stephen, I hate the graph paper, way too busy, especially for the fine point. It also affects the color as you end up seeing the blue of the paper lines mixed with the ink sample.
@TheRiz5212 жыл бұрын

You can't get the right shading because you do not hold the pen correctly. This way the spread of the tines is much smoler and the result is quite inferior than if you had holded the pen in the correct way. The nib should be pointing almost at the angle of the vertical strokes. The palm of the hand should stay parallel to the table, and only the nails of the two last fingers touch the paper, any part of the palm should touch the paper, not turned like you are doing. The turned position is suited for ball point pens, cause these pens can't write if lowly inclined, they need a more steep angle to write consistently. Fountain pens have a more wide range of inclination. But, if you wanna to write with line variation the point of the pen should point about 2 o'clock, in relation with the forearm projection on the paper and from a vertical angle of about 30 and a bit higher. Sometimes even lower angles if you are doing a very steep writting. But for spencerian the angles are about these. If you have any interest about how to do it correctly I can send you a demonstration video.

About shadding: Try a large wet nib and a bit diluted ink. This will produce the best results. You can use a bit of arabic glue in the ink and a good paper to higher the effects and to get astonishing results. It is a necessary a bit of testing for found the exact combination to better results. Concentrated dies produced not so beautiful shadding effects, they tend to stay at the collorfull side.
