Here I verify Inkowl's black catridges not working with the new Brother MFC-J870DW firmware. However, I took down the chip from the original LC101 basic cartridge and put it in Inkowl's LC103 black cartridge, and it works! Now the ink level is back to full. It seems the Brother printer only verify the authenticity of the chip, but not the serial number or anything.

The cartridges are designed to last as long as the printer, very few customers ever need to replace them.

Brother printers are all very reliable, so this a good choice. The MFC-J3520 is not a model we support however, we don't have any cartridges for it.

No, the Brother printer will oblige you to install the original cartridges in the box. After the initialization, you can immediately switch to our refillable cartridges.

I bought a set like these from Nano Digital and they didn't work with my mfc-j870dw. I went back and forth with them and finally they said it was because I am using a printer manufactured after march 2014? That sounded like BS to me, I think they didn't want to refund my money. Does the ink levels show a "?" or an "X"? Normally, with this product, the ink levels should work normally. You may have received a defective set of chips. You should contact your vendor to obtain a replacement.

+Herb Fellows As of today's date (Nov 2 2015), there is mixed information. Firmware version H has existed since 2014 and always worked well with our chips, but some customers do report difficulties. However, upon getting the message that the cartridges are not recognized, by pressing Stop/Exit, some of those customers are able to continue printing. Long story short, as of today's date, we can't guarantee the chips will work. However, in any case, you can always take the chips off your four original ink cartridges and put them onto our refillable cartridges. This always works, 100% of the time.

I am in Canada and I purchased a Brother J875DW printer from Amazon.ca a couple weeks ago. The firmware version on the machine just says "F". Your chips are compatible with this version and will properly reset, correct? Thanks

Hi there! Is it possible to JUST use ONE of these elongated cartridges (the black one) with other standard cartridges until all of my other standard (short) cartridges are used up? 1. Visit www.inkowl.com to buy the refillable cartridges and ink! 2. Brother has done firmware upgrades that caused the printer to not accept compatible chips. However, we constantly update our chip design to work with new firmware versions. As of today's date (Jan 30, 2015), our chips are working with all firmware versions. However, we strongly recommend never updating your printer's firmware (our paper instructions do mention this). Best of all, if ever a firmware update did cause our chips not to be recognized, it's possible to pull them out and put the chips from your original Brother cartridges in, as a quick fix. The ink levels won't be shown, but the printer will work.

If you're using original BROTHER chips, you don't absolutely need a chip resetter, the printer will work regardless. If you do get a chip resetter, then you can make the ink levels appear accurately onscreen, but that's not required. To answer your other question, our chips are auto- reset chips, which means that any time the cartridge is removed and reinstalled, the ink level displayed resets to 100%.

As of March 25, 2015, we are working on all firmware versions on all printers. I can confirm that our chips are one generation above most of the compatible cartridges on the market at this time. In any case, if ever the chips are not recognized for whatever reason, you can always take the chips off your original cartridges and install them onto these refillable cartridges and it will work, just will not show an accurate ink level.

I purchased and tried another ink suppliers "compatible ink" cartridges in this printer and keep getting "Cannot Detect" messages, please reinsert the ink cartridge, ink is low, etc. I believe my printer was updated by Brother shortly after I purchased it. I took the chip off the original LC101BK starter cartridge and put it on the LC103XL "compatible ink cartridge", inserted it and still got the "Cannot Detect" messages. So this may be an issue for some people, but not others, depending on where or who you purchase your "compatible ink cartridges" from. Brother updates, etc. I still get the "ink levels low" messages when I reinsert the "compatible ink cartridge. The ink in the original LC101 starter cartridges doesn't show in the cartridge window, but when you tip the cartridge, the window fills with ink. So there's ink in the cartridge. But the printer wants you to replace the cartridge anyway...$$. The OE Brother LC103 4-pack cartridges are close to $70.00...ouch! My new printer cost about $100.00 plus tax...WT_? Seems the options are buy the original OE LC103 cartridges initially, when the ink runs out, buy bulk ink to refill the original cartridge. But $wonder$ if I would still get "low ink" messages and then the printer won't work until you somehow have a workaround for this? Does inkowl have any "compatible" ink solutions for this situation? For now I'm off to buy some $expensive OE ink$ for my unusable new printer. Being held hostage over ink...? Or I'm being banned by Brother from using my newly purchased Brother printer...Super cool? Even cooler, I can't print out the return label to return the "incompatible ink cartridges" I recently purchased...WT_?
