I regularly spun up The Sims 1 not to control the characters, but to recreate areas from the Resident Evil games. Somewhere on a long forgotten PC hard drive I have the Spencer Mansion built.

Staircases can catch on fire in The Sims 1, and even spread it to the second floor! Brutal. Hearing the burglar noise sent shivers down any kid playing.

They always made it so creepy. I think even in later games it wasn't particularly pleasant. Which is fair, it's a game about consumerism and your stuff is about to be stolen. It's like the ultimate nightmare for your Sims.

Making Magic did NOT introduce aging and life stages. It gave the option to turn a child in to an adult via magic, but that was it.

@@rekkisomo not quite. the Beauty or Beast charm lets Sims temporarily switch to a werewolf or vampire skin but it's purely cosmetic and has no gameplay effect. there is a similar effect in Livin' Large with purple potion from the chemistry set replacing a Sim with a Frankenstein's monster NPC that walks around the house and breaks everything. Makin' Magic introduces the "magical" vs. "non-magical" Sim distinction but this is purely determined by whether the Sim has a magic wand in their inventory so isn't really a true life state (and it was directly preceded by the "famous" vs. "non-famous" distinction in Superstar).

Simlish in the sims 1 isn't based on any languages. They wanted to mix several languages, but the results weren't good. Then the actors just improvised. Don't know about later games though, but we talk about ts1, right? "Kearin and Lawlor served as the Simlish actors for the first several iterations of the game, spanning about up until 2006. The two would remain in the booth for unbroken hours in chains of unbroken days, speaking gibberish to one another, playing off what the other just said by extending a syllable to see what happened, or switching out a melancholy “vitash” for a livelier one."

I still remember playing the original back in the day when getting new expansions was exciting. Then the day I got the complete collection and had access to every expansion. I spent so much time trying to be a wizard or make my sim a celebrity or whatever else. I remember dragons being more trouble than they were worth, despite being really cool as a concept. I spent so many days at my grandfather's place sitting on that computer playing The Sims 1 and 2.

Child sims CAN die in The Sims 2 too although it seems not fully implemented as the ghosts are very glitchy.

To be more specific, Sims 2 is programmed to have children be taken home by family members if they're on a foreign lot beyond a certain time. Dead Sims are treated as being in Family 0, and there's no special case to override children in Family 0 from being taken home, so another member of Family 0 spawns.

The game EA executives think players want to buy, the Sims 4, has basically killed the franchise. The game people actually wanted, the Sims 1, was what executives thought no one would want. Really highlights how out of touch those morons in suits really are. It's not shocking or surprising at this point, we all know how dumb they are, but I can't help but feel sorry for those money-grubbing caricatures. They don't understand a damned thing about the world or public perception. Hell, they treat it like a currency they can cash in for money every time they release a shitty live-service game or expensive crappy DLC.

51: Extremely obscure one that I only know from looking through academic journals for my computing degree dissertation/ thesis and had the subject of video games on my mind. An University, maybe somewhere in the UK (this was late 2000s I can't say for sure), conducting research into methods of teaching English as a second language created a English speaking mod of the Sims and had students learning English play it as part of their research. Years later I can't find anything to back this up. Finding journal through the resources my University provided meant it existed but never found any footage from it online. But yeah instead of Simlish they spoke basic English phrases instead. Although on that note: 52: Simlish was created as a way to save time and money from having the game audio translated into all the languages the rest of the game would be. And maybe they thought knowing what they said and hearing the same phrases constantly would be annoying... Or that was just something only the rest of world said

Oooh I can't wait to watch this. Of all the generations, the first one will always be the most addictive and personal favourite. Could only play it on my brother's pc and I used to sit on the steps outside his room until I could play it again. THAT'S how hooked I was. Also had the best soundtracks, sound effects and general randomness. Am sure there will be stuff on this list I've no idea about.

If they made a remaster id so play it, there tons of mysteries as a kid that you solved in this video, like the phone calls and other stuff i felt like i had to go back and fix things as a kid. Never knew if you kissed the toads it would turn into a prince, i thought it was just there for laughs, Never understood why my sims held their ass now i know its because they got a stomach bug (had an idea) but never knew it was from the buffet table, i used to put that in my house to skip cooking lol. Never knew Avril's character had all that coding, i always tried to talk to her and she would give me her autograph thats it. I think that's why they removed these things as Sims games were released in the future cuz nobody even knew about them, but still should be included because even after all this time, there's something new I experienced in the Sims 1.

I'm sorry, I know that moving to full 3D was the obvious step forward for the series and it is never going back, but there is just something so distinctive about the isometric look of the original game, I miss it so much. To me THIS is what the Sims is supposed to be, like looking into a doll house where you just see from a specific angle, I don't want the camera to be able to zoom into their scale. Even if I'm perfectly aware that it's a technical limitation, sometimes limitations add personality. That goes for a lot of games actually, it is so rare to find games that use an isometric look, which used to be a whole style of making games, you didn't just have "third person" or "first person", a game could be isometric, it could be sidescrolling, it could be top-down... Things are so uniform and stale nowadays, it seems like everything is unifying into one mainstream look and feel, unless you tap into the indie scene. Same goes for things like music and HUD.

I've played The Sims 1 for almost two decades (since 2005-ish), and it is my favourite game in the series. I still play it daily. I'm aware of most of the facts in this video. Yes, the game is quite difficult with the Sims' needs going down so quickly all the time, but it remains my favourite due to the nostalgia. It is also extremely difficult for me to get Drew Carey to show up at my parties, because of the party guests' needs dropping as mentioned. I have had him show up, but oftentimes I tend to get Gabby the Mime (showing up at bad parties) or Pete/Paulette Dropinsky (showing up at average parties). If a Sim pleads with the Grim Reaper and loses at rock-paper-scissors, the dead Sim will be resurrected as a zombie and lose all of their personality points. Great video.

Okay, facts that I know. (I only had Livin' Large in case things changed later.) If you place the burgular alarm outside it had a range off detection which can keep him from stealing anything when placed right. If you only have one enterance and a narrow path to it you can place your bills along that path and the thief will take them, then the game will pay you the amount they are worth instead of taking it from you when he is caught. The best paying occupation was in the programming field but it doesn't compare to making gnomes all day. (Stay home, make gnome) The Tragic Clown is only an issue if your Sim is friendly. If they are mean spirited they can literally slap the clown silly which boosts their mood and causes the clown to flee. The Forgotten Guinea Pig picture can get you a rare and deadly disease if you have a guinea pig and don't treat it right. The guinea pig will bite you and the death counter will start...

In the Sims 1, you can create child only households. First create a family with at least one adult and however many children you want in the household (or pick a preexisting family with children). Move them into a lot then kill off the adult/s. Voila, you have a household run by children! 😅 The novelty does wear off as the children can't do a lot (since they can't cook, they can only eat snacks and order pizza) but it is a fun little exploit!

i once had a house party and the clown turned up i also remember trapping a burglar between some fences so he couldn’t escape 😂even though i bought all expansions for sims 1-3 i only ever warmed to sims one as i could easily use photos of celebrities or video game characters faces to make sims.i at one point had a house with all resident evil characters in.

Sims 1 living large also has zombies for the game. When the grim reaper brings a dead sim back, there was a smal change the sim turn into a zombie, they have no personality points, and this can happend with childsims too happend one time for me, I was shocked. I was trying to get a zombie family after this.

The situation with Avril Lavigne reminds me of when Activision brought in celebrities in Guitar Hero starting with the third game. They stopped doing it in Warriors of Rock after they got sued by Gwen Stefani and Kurt Cobain's widow Courtney Love as they didn't quite like what players could do with said celebs ingame. The issue with Cobain is moot point to some tho as some felt that Kurt has a sense of humour and would just laugh at the idea of him singing and dancing to Spice Girls had he lived.
