Inkscape - Create One Piece Stencils

I was just wondering why when you unioned all the little blue bridge pieces with the main red project they turned red?

Is it really necessary to ungroup the letters and then click union? Doesn't "union" do the same thing as group?

beertrain you cannot “union” unless you ungroup them first.
