Similar to my low poly portrait tutorial, only using a quicker method more suitable for this sort of design. This will also be an introduction for the Mesh Gradient tool.
This tutorial is for Inkscape version 0.92 and is intended to teach beginners how to use the software. Inkscape is a great free alternative to Illustrator and Corel Draw.

I FOUND THE SOLUTION. :) Might want to pin this, Nick, as I think it's a problem with newer versions of Inkscape. So, highlight all of your circles and hit Path>>Simplify. This will reduce your circle from 4 nodes to 2. Now, when you run your Voronoi Diagram extension it will work perfectly. I'll also include the current pinned comment here just to provide more helpful info in this comment: "after you colored the first triangle you can just use the "Tab" Key to toggle between the triangles so you don't need to switch the tools every time."

For those having trouble getting the wire frame using Voronoi diagram, select all the nodes (circles) and then use Object to Path before using the Extension --> Generate from path --> Voronoi diagram option. This worked for me. Saw a comment below that discussed this but it's buried way down in the comments, so hopefully repeating this tip in a more recent comment will make it easier to find.

Great tutorial Nick! For those of you who have the problem with messy lines make sure you do not duplicate before using the SPACE BAR duplicate method. It's just enough to grab a circle and use the SPACE BAR to create copies of that. TLDR : Don't CTRL + D before you use SPACE BAR to create copies.

If you use the newer version of Inkscape, I think I found a way to achieve a similar goal. Apparently, the new Vonoroi diagram extension does not like when the dots that outline the square here are perfectly aligned. So the solution I came up with is placing the dots OUTSIDE the square manually. Then place random dots inside the square and perform the extension, as instructed in the video. You should be able to get neat triangles like in the video this way. When you are done with coloring in those triangles with the dropper, then delete the strokes and group all the triangles. Then draw a new square, in the same size as the meshed one. Select the square and the grouped triangles, Object->Clip->Set; you should now have something like th abstract background like the one made in the video, although among the colorful triangles there will be some squares (but I guess the average person won't care. right?)

I had problems with getting the triangles to work properly, as others mentioned in the comments. However, some of the tips others gave didn't work so here's what I tried (not sure if anyone else mentioned it but I didn't see it). I started over with the circles and when I made them I went around the border (clockwise) first then when I made the duplicates inside the box I made them close together as I moved around the box vs making them all over in more random spots. I thought that perhaps an internal layering order in the software might be trying to connect those that had been made (duplicated) close in order of when they were made and not relative to where they were physically. If that makes any sense. Well, that worked for me in any case. Thx!

Make sure Layer 1 is locked! (before selecting all the circles for triangulation) For duplicates, make the circles black with 50% opacity and check them against a white background (by simply clicking Layer 1 visibility off), it's really easy to tell if there's any duplicates that way. I assume the duplicate circles come when people press space bar on the last circle when they should just place the last one by letting go of it (release mouse button) instead of copying yet another one (space bar).

my inkscape is behaving badly!! I got so many extraneous lines going from every dot to eery other dot. so I un grouped, deleted the very large triangles , then added in the shorter missing lines one by one! selected a circle, selected same fill and stroke to delete the circles. also I stayed on gradient fill and as I selected the triangles to dropper color, it created a nice gradient of the color in each triangle. very nice. I don't know why mine came out differently except its 2 years later and the versions may have changed something.

So this is for all who have problems with the Voronoi Diagram tool (including me): I just found a solution that needs a bit more time but works nevertheless. 1. You do everything until 4:04 (including the second layer). 2. On the second layer you now create all the different triangles you want to have MANUALLY. Sounds harder than it is. 3. When finished with creating the triangles you have to use the (I don't know what it's called in English) tool where you can choose a colour from any part of the picture (F7) and pick the colour that is in the middle of every single triangle. Press "Tab" to switch between the triangles. For example for one triangle you take the colour that is right in it's middle. For the other one you choose the colour that is in it's middle. Same with every other triangle. You can check if you coloured every triangle by making layer 1 invisible. 4. Your picture should look like the one in this tutorial (at least mine did). You're finished.

I read on reddit that I needed to ensure that not of the green circles were overlapping, but that didn't fix my problem. Hey Nick! I would like to say that I absolutely love your tutorials so far 👍 Second thing is that I am using Inkscape version 1.1.1, and I followed every step only to land up having the triangulation design with too many weird lines and becoming oversized. The good thing is, I got it fixed (thanks to the Stack Exchange forum) by either converting the circles to paths and then adding in the design, or leaving the circles as it is and downsizing the design to the size of the rectangle with the mesh grid colours. Lastly, make sure to have no overlapping duplicate dots, and the dots along the edge of the rectangle should be random on every edge (number and spacing wise), not copied and pasted. Just wanted to leave this comment here in case anyone stumbles into a similar problem like this. Thank you again! 😄

Dude! Nick! I've been totally digging your videos, and this one is no exception. However, it's the first tutorial I've followed where I've run into some trouble... After putting all my dots in place, selecting them, and running the Delauney extension on 'em, I get a right mess of lines -- overlapping paths, paths reaching to far-away nodes instead of the nearest ones, and even nodes that aren't connected at all! I've tried it on two machines (a Windows PC and my preferred Linux laptop), both of them running Inkscape .92 and all the settings you suggest. And yet... Any idea what could be the matter? Thanks in advance! Thanks to your tutorials, I've been able to impress all my FB friends.

It's beautiful work, and I really like your videos. Top quality stuff: classy, slick, great choice of subjects, and I'm learning a lot. Unfortunately I'm still brand new to Inkscape (and I only started on Gimp 4 months ago), so 'complicated, intuitive' things like your tool-choice, menu selections and mouse movements happen a bit too quickly for me to follow. I keep thinking 'Huh? What? Why did you need to -?' and by then you've moved on. Of course it will all seem obvious after a while - like developing muscle-memory for playing the violin - but at the moment I haven't quite reached the status of 'Beginner', so I'm having to watch each video in 5 second segments! Ah well; it's a good excuse to watch everything again. And again. And again... :-)

I don't know if something changed in version 1.0 but no matter how many times I try, and no matter how many times I change the circles, I cannot get the Delaunay Triangulation to work right. Some of the lines connect the way they are supposed to, but then there are several nodes around the edges that leave a gap between them with no line, and then others connect to too many circles that are not nearby creating a mess of lines jumbled together. I've checked to make sure I don't have duplicate circles on top of each other. If anyone is still watching this and has it figured out I'd love to know. Thanks!

I had a strange problem that one triangle coudn't be selected to change the color. I tried to select it every way possible, it just woudn't go, maybe for some reason there wasn't a triangle where it seemed, so I created it with the Bezier tool and it worked fine.

I think I found out the solution of this issue. 1) Delete all duplicated circles which accidentally was made during copying (Two circles are located in one place - delete additional circle). 2) Close the rectangle with circles (add more circles on two sides of rectangle). I hope it helps :D

I was having the same issue but didn't find duplicates and the second option helped in some areas but would still create the problem in other areas. I finally found a third option that worked great. I posted that in this comment: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZnGqaitebCibKs&lc=Ugwuwq58pFN0y3eQfgt4AaABAg

I have a question about gradients. Is it only me or Inkscape doesn't handle gradients that well. My partner is using Illustrator and she noticed right away that something is off with those gradients. It was best seen when we used a high-quality Dell monitor. Inkscape gradients seem to be chopped into segment like shapes. It's not smooth, it's like stairs - you can see the lines between the steps. Is there any fix to it?

Hi Nick. . . another great tutorial. I tried another trick to make the lines disappear; instead of deleting the mesh image on layer 1, I copied the group on layer 2 and used the paste size to make the mesh gradient rectangle the same size. I then raised it to layer 2 and lowered it beneath the group and the lines disappeared. I exported it to png to make sure that would work as well. Thanks again for showing one of the new features of 92.

Excellent! I had a little trouble following what you did, but here's what I did which I think is similar maybe just simplified? Before removing the stroke outline of layer 2 I made layer 1 visible, unlocked it, then resized the mesh rectangle to the same size as layer 2, then when I removed the stroke of layer 2, boom no white lines!

I tried to use the Voronoi Diagram extension but the only extension I have in the 'Generate from Path' section is 'Inset/Outset Halo.' Apparently, none of the extensions in the 'Generate from Path' section you have did not come with Inkscape when I first installed it on my computer a few weeks ago. I tried looking for the Voronoi Diagram extension but had no luck. I couldn't find it on the official Inkscape website, either. Any advice on where to look for additional Inkscape extensions besides the official website? Any information you can provide will be useful. Thank you.

Hm, mine went wrong somewhere. You have a set black box around your design but mine is warped. I'm wondering if this is contributing to my second problem, I can't click on the spaces, only the black lines. I also have "ungroup selected groups" rather than "ungroup selected objects"? drive.google.com/file/d/0BxQOPJ-4bAlXTjlQV2R2WWowMUU/view?usp=sharing

My voronoi diagram extension didnt really work well, ended up getting a lot of duplicate overlapped lines and lines between dots very var from one another, creating a pretty ugly frame of triangles. I cleaned it up pretty quickly but im wondering should I reinstall inkscape 0.92 or install 0.91 to avoid this? edit: now this issue is making it nearly impossible to color in the triangles properly, as once I ungrouped the diagram half of the triangles arent actually objects, the individual lines for the sides are their own objects. This is a headache!

Perhaps a silly question, but when I duplicate the layer to make the white lines go away, the whole thing gets way more saturated. I want it rather pale. I don't see a shift in color when you duplicate your layer. What's causing it? Any idea?

The Voronoi diagram makes messy lines, rather than nice triangles. Using the Bezier tool to manually draw triangles opens up even more work. Would be good to know how to have correct triangles from the Voronoi diagram.

Is there a reason why I get an error message when I go to do the Voronoi Diagram process. It'll then make the diagram all weird and the lines don't come out as uniform as yours do. I've added more dots, removed dots, not sure whats happening.

I figured out (at least for my computer) that you can also click D for dropper and S for select. And then I realized if I was using the dropper tool already and hit D again, it went back to the select tool. It made the process very fast!

In case you had the bad-looking triangles problem, if found out that the reason for that its that you have two or more circles in the same spot, one above the other.

Hi Nick, I want to bring something to your attention, I´m getting a "warning : mesh SVG Syntax Subject To Change." I haven´t seen how it affect things yet, also my triangles are equally messed up with many having the same origin point and there are no duplicates. This is what is being said on the Inkscape page about the warning; "WARNING: Mesh SVG syntax is subject to change. Mesh support in browsers is not certain. For web use, one can replace a mesh by a bitmap using Edit->Create bitmap copy. For print, export to PDF supports meshes." Thanks for the great videos, I´m learning loads!!
