I think we should think of it like this, mason is dead and throughout the bo2 campaign you won't see him unless you actually shoot him in the legs instead of the head and even then you'll only see him during the post credit scene. Therefore i believe Mason is alive, but no we won't see him in bo6 because during this period mason didnt show himself and kept his status dead till 30+ years later

Mason definitely isn’t dead in the opening scene in bo2 it shows Mason “dead” but he doesn’t have a bullet hole in his head. The only way to kill him is to shoot him in the head
