@@madbioreptiles I'm an enthusiast who lives in Australia and in the past 20 years we've had two bites (that i can recall, may be more) to this species, the US has had more (3), which is crazy in the grand scheme considering they dont naturally occur there. We know not to piss about with these elapids, and have laws ensuring that you basically canot legally own one, for good reason. The Coastal Taipan, due to its twitchy disposition and larger size is actually a much more dangerous specimen to keep in my opinion than the Inland, and i still cant get my head around how its legal for a snake like that to be kept unregulated in certain states in the US. I agree with the Kentucky Zoo, unless they are going to get an instant replacement of their Antivenin which is there to protect certified and qualified keepers/handlers, why should they give it up to unskilled/certified hobbiests who are unlikely to fund the replenishment of stock. I do concede though that i wasnt responding to the actual message the zoo posted from a certain male herpetologist which you were commenting on, i was referencing a female herp's post from some weeks before. After reading the message you refer to, I agree was in bad taste.

I've been an animal lover all my life as a kid growing up back in the 70's I had a wild self-caught garter snake for a few months until it got out of it's cage and scared my mom, then it got released back in the wild. I also used to breed mice for a pet store that sold them as live bait. No, here I am pushing 60 and I live on a farm breeding fainting goats and have rescue horses from the kill pens and 1 rescue mini donkey from the kill pens. I respect all the snakes in my area and even talk to them when I find them in my chicken coop or feed shed. The one in the coop is a Black Rat snake and the one in the feed shed is an Eastern Rat snake. I have a perfect shed from both of them, both are just shy of 6 ft long. This was very interesting to listen to and I look forward to listen to more. Love the learn.

You cannot bash Jim and the Kentucky Reptile Zoo for not supplying him with anti-venom. They hold that for their own staff and family to use if the worst happens; they have every possible right to keep that for themselves. It’ll take months (and thousands of dollars) to restock that should they need it, and seeing as they house multiple animals that may cause a bite, it’s not an impossibility that they would need it. This guy was wildly irresponsible, and did this to himself for him own wacky reasonings. Why should they be obligated and looked down upon because they’re looking out for their own people, rather than a lunatic that played with fire, and ultimately got burnt? 100% I stand by Jim and the zoo’s decision here.

Chandler has really matured over the years. I think Tyler has been a good role model for him. Rewilding captive bred animals is a very complex issue, because you have to look at what factors made them become endangered or functionally extinct in their original habitats. In many cases, their habitats have been razed to the ground. Timber harvesting, monoculture farming, housing developments can all destroy their original homes. Native people use the animals for food, as well as depending on poaching sales and hides. The local people need to feed their kids, so you have to work with the communities to remake their entire economy in order to incentivize those communities to get involved in conservation. The final part of the puzzle is figuring out how to make conservation more profitable than what they've been doing before.

I live in Pennsylvania and I always thought our venomous laws were so insane. You can literally keep any venomous snake you want, no permit needed, as long as it is not a native snake. We have 3 venomous snakes in PA. You can’t have them, but the true heavy hitters, who cares haha

Honestly I was watching NERD's videos at the time and was like man u guys are pretty fucked up to talk that way about him. It felt like a hate video instead of legitimately criticizing on Chandler's practices at the time. Fortunately, everyone can tell that Chandler smartened up. I bet it feels a little awkward though how Kevin keeps showering Tyler with gifts while Chandler and Kevin have some beef going on.

@@InfaredAffliction I don’t have proof but I’m nearly certain that in general venomous are less likely to bite. The problem is if they do it can be serious. Although deaths are much less common than people think in the US. If you check the nation poison control reports there are pretty consistently 30-35 exotic snake bites total per year in the US and no fatalities in most years, there are about 5000 - 7000 bites from native venomous with approx 3-7 fatalities per year.

So no one should say one’s life is greater than the next! Again thanks chandler for your knowledge and wise words keep up the amazing work on educating are world on wildlife.

I'm a bit reserved for one point: antivenom offering is to reverse an accident not to encourage an incident. People are responsible for their own acts. It makes no sense to moral-kinap others for "humanitarian reasons" because those zookeepers are also parents to children. The only difference is they work properly not recklessly. I prefer Viperkeeper's view on this matter.
@madbioreptiles3 ай бұрын
Our point was that is was wrong to publicize it for the man’s family to see. He is a father, & the post on social media is just to flex the fact that they had anti venom, were not going to share, & make an example out of him. That is WRONG. If that is the decision youre making the is 0 reason to make a post on how you are going to make an example out of someones life for his family to see

The issue here is that the guy who got bit was horrifically negligent; no game plan for a bite, no idea where to get antivenom (and he publicly mocked people who'd use antivenom, before this happened).

Big CWL fan here, but with that said, I was a tad surprised he was defending fwc about killing that boa, when they were seizing retics. Idk enough about the permit process and all to argue about how long the guy had to do what he needed to do, so forget about that for now. But saying he shouldn't have had the boa in that room is a little weird to me. Honestly idc what room it was in, if you're part of a team that is protecting wildlife, and you're there to seize a certain invasive species, you should absolutely be able to identify it by sight period. And to not be able to recognize the boa constrictor, one of the most common, and recognizable snakes in the pet trade, and not be able to tell it from a Burmese python is freaking wild to see from a professional. When I was a kid the albino Burmese was one of the most sought after snakes in the pet trade. If you can't identify your target species you really shouldn't be doing that job. I think there was a lot of crap happening there, but just based on the fact that they misidentified a boa, and killed it, is completely inexcusable to me. I mean, let's be real here. How!? Wow wtf.

Here's the thing, though. The police report, which was publicized, said that when they entered the house. they found huge numbers of flies around the windows, rotting meat, garbage everywhere, feces and urine soaked cat beds, and all the snakes in Tupperware containers- some with holes drilled in them large enough that the snakes could have gotten through them. They did reach out to zoos, reptile rescues, etc... but no one wanted these snakes because of the gross conditions under which they were kept. They didn't want to risk bringing in parasites or disease to their own facilities. That's why the agreement was finally made to euthanize them. this guy was hugely irresponsible about everything, and now that he's regained consciousness, he's blaming everyone but himself for everything that has happened.

The inland Taipan and the Eastern brown snake I think it is, don't have antivenin of their own. Despite being 2 of the deadliest snakes in the world let alone native to Australia, bites aren't common enough to warrant antivenin. Not sure what they use for Eastern Brown snake antivenin but I know they use Coastal Taipan antivenin for the inland Taipan.

@@joshuastover1047 having your own anti venom is ideal, however it is not a simple process and the thousands of dollars it costs to stock even one vial of Australian anti venom for a snake that has caused no recorded fatalities anywhere and only two bites. It’s easy to understand why he wouldn’t. I’m not saying that Jeff is entitled to their anti venom, I believe in personal freedom. I can’t imagine making the decision not to share it when you know it could cost someone’s life though. But that is a moral decision for them to make. I just think it makes KRZ look really like a company that doesn’t care about people at all though. Also unlike what people say, they don’t extract for anti venom there they extract for medical research.

Fortunately Jeff seems to be recovering without their help. To me the idea of not sharing anti venom with someone who you consider careless would be like not donating blood because a motorcyclist crashed doing a wheelie on the highway.
