This is an edited version of the song. Maybe it was a radio friendly edit to keep the song shorter or something but since you enjoyed the guitar, you'd probably like the full length song which includes the extended guitar solo missing here. It's the best part of the song in my opinion!

Mark is a finger picker, never uses a plectrum. It stems from when he only had a acoustic guitar. The guitar you see here is a 1967 stratocaster. Their ALCHEMY live album is unsurpassed as a dire straits masterclass in musicianship and entertainment. The album Brothers in arms is a tour de force of song writing..

The song is about a witnessing a jazz band playing before a very small crowd in a bar and they are good but they are minimal and at the end of their set they call themselves the Sultans of Swing. This is what inspired the song.

Dire Straits ("dye yer stray yits") was a pop rock band formed in the UK in the 70's by Mark Knopfler (vocals & lead guitar)... this was the original line-up and their first hit single (it was edited for the video) in 1978 from their debut album w/ John Illsley (bass), Pick Withers (drums) and Mark's brother David Knopfler (guitar)... David left after 2 albums and Pick Withers played on 4 albums before leaving in 1982... Mark Knopfler and John Illsley kept Dire Straits going w/ session musicians, scoring their biggest hit record in 1985 - 'Brothers in arms'... which sold 9x platinum... Mark Knopfler wrote all the songs and delivered 1 more Dire Straits album in 1991 and tour... He disbanded Dire Straits by 1993 and debuted as a solo artist in 1996, which he still does today. Mark Knopfler is a talented guitarist - he can play any style of music, from blues to jazz... country to rock... pop and prog rock... Dire Straits' music incorporated so many styles of music... Mark Knopfler's vocals were a mix of Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley. Dire Straits biggest hit was the single 'Money for nothing' in 1985 from the album 'Brothers in arms'... Other songs by the band - 'Romeo & Juliet' ... 'Walk of life' ... 'Water of love' ... 'Calling Elvis' ... 'Your latest trick'... 'Tunnel of love'... 🔥🔥

'Dire' to rhyme with 'Higher' - it means 'severe' - so 'Dire Straits' = 'deep sh*t'. The full version goes on with an EPIC solo that is ranked as one of the worlds' best, worth looking it up as I feel you only got a taste of what the band can do.

I always thought this song was interesting because it's a rock song about a jazz band. There's no "honky-tonk" (a piano) or "horns" (which could mean saxes, or actual brass instruments such as trumpets or trombones). But it describes the scene well lyrically and musically and weirdly works.

One of my favourite bands from the 70s. Started by Mark and David Knopfler (rhythm guitar). David only stayed with the band for two albums and then went solo. Mark Knopfler is the best finger plucker I have heard. He is still active today and has written film scores, as well as solo albums too. Dire Straits were admitted tio the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.

In the Alchemy live version they have a new drummer Terry Williams and he's absolutely brilliant and blows this version out of the water. PS he is also a left handed person but taught himself to play right handed My favourite Dire Straits song is Telegraph road and I've listened to it every day for forty years since it first came out. Telegraph road and also Sultans of Swing live versions on the 1983 Alchemy live concert are just unbelievable.

I listened to an interview, and the song is about a (I'm paraphrasing) time these guys went into a little dive bar. They said that while they were having drinks a band was playing, and when the band finished they said, "Thank you, we are The Sultans of Swing." The lead singer said that was the most ridiculous name he could imagine for that band because they did not in fact, swing, or sound good. So, he wrote a song from their perspective, and imagined how they must have thought they sounded, he also gave them back stories, lol.

This song is a classic. I've loved it from the moment it came out, and just grown to appreciate it even more. Quick note that I haven't seen in the comments: It's not "left-handed old guitar", but "dented old guitar". I can assure you as a lefty that our guitars are usually slightly more expensive than those backwards ones the right handers play. Oh, and I'm hooked on your channel now. You have a lovely smile, and I adore a paisana :)

Just so you know it's pronounced "Die-Er" In Britain the term dire straits is slang for financial hardship. If someone says they're in "dire straits" they're saying that they have no money. This band are so underrated and the lead musician Mark Knopfler is an incredible song writer. You should definitely check out more of their stuff. I'd suggest their songs "Money for Nothing" and "Brothers in Arms" for future reaction videos.

In case the lyrics didn't make it clear -- this song is kind of celebrating a certain kind of semi-professional, semi-amateur musicians that played in London pubs and other small venues in the mid 1970s. At a time when most popular music was focused on big arena bands, glam bands, and artsy progressive rock bands, people like the members of Dire Straits preferred a more raw, stripped down and old-fashioned brand of music played by part-timers who didn't expect to make it big. Anyway, that's the mythology of it. This song in particular is praising the unsung bands that didn't have all the money and slick technology that the big time bands and artists had.

Marl Knophler (the lead guitarist, lead singer, and lead song writer) is considered one of the best guitarists ever to chart in the top 100. IMO, he is the best. His solo stuff is also excellent, just not as guitar heavy as the stuff he did with Dire Straights. BTW, Left handed guitars are not cheaper, the lyrics were misquoted in the text. He says; "they say an old guitar is all he can afford", not "left handed guitar is all he can afford".

Mark Knopfler, the lead singer and guitar player, had written this song in 1977, after ducking into a deserted pub one rainy night and witnessing a lousy jazz band. Undeterred by the lack of both talent and punters, their lead singer finished the set with a mildly enthusiastic, “Goodnight and thank you. We are the Sultans Of Swing.” Knopfler at least left the pub with the seed of an idea. Returning home, he wrote this song for his newly formed band, Dire Straits. Mark and his brother got the name for the band, because they could hardly pay their bills. Luckily, Mark stepped into this bar and wrote this song, it changed the bands lives! By the way the "Harry" mentioned in this song is not Prince Harry, as he wouldn't be born for another 7 or so years.
