It would’ve been very fitting to play “The Hebrides Ouverture“ by the German romantic composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy as background music. He composed it after a trip to Scotland in 1829. It’s majesty captures the fascinating landscape very well

Iona was a pagan spiritual centre going back thousands of years, long before Columba's lifetime. The reason is partly geographical as it was at the centre of the ancient Celtic shipping network (which stretched from Orkney to Tintagel and beyond). And it was partly to do with an astrological phenomenon which helped these early seafarers navigate their routes... Every 18 years the moon reaches its lowest orbit in the sky, and as you look east from Iona it appears to roll along the horizon of hills. Over thousands of years (and just like Stonehenge) this phenomenon turned Iona into a gathering place for festivals, where ceremonies like funerals, marriages and alliances were forged in a primitive church/court/parliament. So when Columba founded his church he was re-establishing a capital and thereby attemping to establish an independent kingdom. What's funny is how the superstitious nature of the Iona cult traditions were passed down, spread out and are still visible across society.

The road from Craignure to Fionnphort is totally unsuitable for the large vehicles operated by West Coast Tours. The ancient bridge at Pennyghael has been ruined by the passage of large vehicles.
