For the past decade I have been documenting the comment section under news... I haven't made it public because I'm too lazy to spend the 500 hours it would take to upload... I'm Gen-X and Basquiat was more than half a decade older than me. Keep in mind that he passed away in the late 80s. He would be 64 yrs of age today. He didn't get to see the 90s or the 21st century, which is mind-blowing if you stop to think about the generations of visual artists and musicians he continues to inspire. I had the privilege of knowing him in real-time, even though we didn't live in the same city. From 1985 to 1987, we had a snail mail correspondence of letters which included original drawings of his. This was when the Internet did not quite yet exist, Wi-Fi was still just a dream in those days. Cellphones existed, but the technology was primitive and not widely available. I have moved dozens of times since those days, and I don't have a single one of those original hand drawings he shared with me. Even with everything going on in his life, he was really just a misunderstood kid at heart. I was supposed to go visit him in New York the week that he left this earthly dimension. His spirit is still here, even if his body isn't.

@alishadaniels4815 I'm sure worth a lot to some people...but priceless to me. Nobody would believe it, but I wouldn't have sold them. Some people in this world still have honor and integrity. Just the fact that I no longer have them is why I even told the story. I wouldn't want some crazed fan, or just some greedy person, trying to find me so they could break in my crib and steal them. I wouldn't have said anything.

He was always staying at different women's apartments before his art took off because he was homeless. He always had a girlfriend. He was a graffiti artist back then and he would always tag all over the city using the name SAMO. Then his art took him to iconic status and the white racist media was always messing with him and mischaracterizing him. A lot of it was jealousy because he was one of the only black people in those wealthy spaces at a time when whites wouldn't even allow black people in their clubs. I remember those days.
