It's not that specific. Mind maps are tools to explore or analyze a topic or a problem, which explains why they are centred around one item, with branches expanding from it. I would describe (personal view) concept maps as a transition toward flowcharts when you shift from the problem analysis to the action stage. You can begin with a mind map used by the group to explore all facets, then move to a concept map when you decide who will do what (with branches containing an action verb that links the person node to the action node. The main difference is between the mind map being centred and the concept map being delocalized. However, at the end of the day, they are tools and only tools to help us make our thoughts real. So, we can use and modify them as we wish.

@@ReddyReddy-yn5uf Mind maps work well with anything that requires an opened creativity: project or problem analysis, group brainstorming. Basically, if you can identify a central topic. A mind map is read from the center to the outside. You identify the main topics (main branches), then explore in detail each of them. You will always start with a mind map. Concept maps: mostly when you must connect people with tasks, the linker being the action. Concept maps can be read from any starting point and are not built around a central topic. They are a way to collect information and review task allocation. They are still a little bit disorganized since it's a creative tool that allows you to explore the whole range of tasks or actions. As you move down a more specific description, the rigid structure of flowcharts with their symbols and their resulting Gantt Chart will help to tighten the screws of the project.

@@ReddyReddy-yn5uf To make the long story short: Mind maps have always a central topic and a star-like structure. Concept maps have not. I cannot go into more detail.

Request. Can you make a video showing a series of analogous concept maps, paired side by side, showing where the analogy between two otherwise different concepts happens, at which orbits, across which branches, where the branch/orbit locations fail to perpetuate the analogy (where the analogy breaks down), and your conclusion as to whether doing this type of analysis (comparing/reengineering analogously paired concepts) can produce insights for how to systematically discover creative solutions?

My knowledge and use of different types of maps have increased since I created this video. I will see what I can do to fulfill your request. My advice would be to keep things as organic as possible. Using maps gives a lot of flexibility in our mind process, to think, review, plan, etc. We shouldn't let us be confined in a definition. I have the outline of a full course on maps and their use. I still need to find time to create it. But I'm sure I can update these videos that are a little be outdated now, and address your request. Best. Eric

@@GigglinHamster I have no FB group for now. I might create one when my course is ready to launch. Your requests entice me to kick my butt...I haven't found fo myself great FB groups, except those created to support a given software. I'm using mostly SimpleMindMap (great for actual mind maps) and XMind8 Pro (more versatile), both for Mac. I paid for both of them. For people with a PC, I recommend VUE (Visual Understanding Environment), a free software created by the University of Delft (vue.tufts.edu/). I used if a lot but they stop upgrading it and it doesn't support the last Mac OS. It's still great for PC. Finally, I'm using also LucidChart (the Pro version), a very complete platform for any type of chart. Best. Eric

@@GigglinHamster Hi Jeff, here are some updates on my previous response. I have rebuilt my company website (www.imi-information.com/) to integrate these tools. I'm planning to do the same with this KZbin Channel (or maybe my Company channel) to introduce more concepts relevant to your request. It's true that the difference between mind maps, concept maps, cognitive maps or flow charts can be confusing regarding the type of application you choose. My opinion on this matter is simple: don't worry about the colour of the cat as long as it catches mice. Same here. It doesn't matter that you create mind maps with longer terms than one single word, or add action verbs on the link. What matters is only: is it useful?

Not totally as the concept map includes actions. I would say that mind map is to explore first options, then set an action plan with a concept mat. However, they are just tools and can be adapted as a function of our needs. A mind map is supposed to have one single entree, the central node, and radiate from it. With a concept map, you can enter wherever you want and follow different paths.

You can draw any type of map as long as it helps your purpose. Mind maps have a central topic (the unique entree point) from which branches and sub-branches radiate. Concept maps have different entree points and connect nodes with actions. Both are specific variations of what we could call "cognitive maps," a more generic term. Flow charts are also cognitive maps with their own structure (shape symbols, decision nodes, etc.). Best. Eric
