@@williambentley5347 Hi William, the best is to follow your dentist’s advise, if you trust him and he’s good. If your tooth is very strong and I’m not sure since you had a root canal done,but if it is a crown is the way to go, but today’s best option would be an implant, the only drawback is the cost….. here in Montreal, Canada the cost of one implant will run you about 3,000$. My crown is still 100% because he was a really good dentist, he did not do a root canal so my original tooth that the crown is over is very strong and alive, once you do a root canal the tooth is considered dead, it will be more prone to cracking, so the minimum you can do right now is to get a crown to help protect it from breaking/cracking, but this option is not 100% guaranteed since you got a root canal done before, so in this case the best solution would be to remove it and get an implant. But talk to your specialist first…… Hope this helps, good luck.

I have been a general dentist for over 40 years and I would like to give my view. Although I agree with the premise that crowns are over prescribed by some dentists, often a crown IS the correct solution for many situations. Yes, front teeth need crowns less than back teeth. The stronger biting forces on back teeth indicate crowning more often. The front teeth are more amenable to fillings and veneers. But sometimes a crown is the best solution there as well! It depends on the judgement of the dentist. I think non-dentists are not able to make this judgement as well as dentists. So if a patient is skeptical, I suggest one or two additional consults with totally different dentists. I have practiced conservatively with the idea that the less you do to a tooth the better off it is. But don't be afraid of crowns; they do an important job in reconstruction of a tooth when necessary. And no need to regret having had them. I as a dentist have had twelve crowns in my mouth. And I am happy with them. They saved my teeth! If faced with many crown recommendations, get multiple consults.

As a dentist, you can afford your crowns. I have a premium dental insurance plan, but front upper incisor crowns were denied as "being cosmetic," even though that is not at all the reason for them. As a 77 year-old, very happily married to a beautiful, very highly educated woman who is 31 years younger than me (she married me for being a medical research scientist, as that is what she is), I most certainly not having crowns to attract 19 year-old bubbleheads!

@freddyaltina27376 жыл бұрын
Way Too Epic Tons of people don’t get dental with their insurance, even working a great full time job. I’m one of them. Thankfully, the dentist office I go to works with people who don’t have insurance. They give people that qualify (which most do) a 30% discount if you don’t have insurance. Still is expensive, but not nearly as bad as most dentists. But main point, stop making such ignorant statements. You don’t know everyone’s lives of their individual situations. You just sound like a brat. 🤮
@npinsk6 жыл бұрын
@@freddyaltina2737 That's amazing that your dentist is able to give the 30% discount, but the reality is that the lab fees, material costs, and fixed cost to run the practice sum up to an average of 75% of the cost of the procedure. Thus, giving even a 25% discount would mean the dentist isn't making any money for his labor and is doing "free work". Dentists are not to blame for the "outrageous" prices, but the dental supply companies are for charging extremely high prices do to their monopoly on medical supplies. Sources: American Dental Association's figures on average dental practice's overhead nationwide
@m.k.15436 жыл бұрын
Way Too Epic hey @WayTooEpic, Please take a deep breath. I think you incorrectly read into what the original poster wrote. I work for a dental office and deal with dental insurance every day, and I used to work for a medical insurance company so I see both sides. What the original poster was saying is that the mouth is the gateway to the body. If the mouth is healthy the rest of the body stays healthier. Its a fact. Even if you are a healthy person but have oral issues you could actually be risking your life by not getting them fixed. The problem is that even some big companies, with good jobs offer crappy insurance just like some Mom snd Pop companies offer good insurance. It’s a crap shoot out there. Also a fact. As a sidebar do you know the history of dental insurance? It was like 1962 and one of the big corporations like GE or something, (I always get the company confused ) wanted to give a benefit to their employees to help them with dental bills. This is where Delta Dental was born. The amount they gifted their employees was $1000.00. The same amount that over 50% of policies still offers today over 50 years later! Inflation has gone up and so have the premiums but the benefits haven’t. They figured out that if the amount of benefits had kept up with inflation then everyone would get about $10,000.00 a year in benefits. Also for any of the big ticket items like crowns insurance only pays 50% and some dont pay at all for veneers. So before ANYBODY gets their panties in a bunch and calls others names, lets read and re read each others posts using different inflection in our heads when we do so we are less likely to judge. As a side-note to all, if you live in CT, MA, Or RI there is an app called Chewsi which offers discounts on all claims that the ins company says there is no benefit for, or you’ve run out of benefits for the year. Its easy to use too. You hook your credit card up to it and pay the dentist with the push of a button and its associated with AAA! Happy New Year y’all! And good oral hygiene to all!

I am a huge fan of innovative dental, but I think its important to understand that both veneers and crowns have their place. Often times we place crowns on teeth that are fractured or structurally impaired, for various reasons, such as large restorations that are failing. I would say that this is the main reason for cutting all the way around the tooth, not because that is what is necessary for temporary crowns. Same goes for front teeth, and I agree that veneers should be used when possible, but sometimes it is the case that crowns are a better option. I just worry that this video will cause people to be fearful of crowns, or not trust their dentist's judgement.
@Briguy10272 жыл бұрын
Yeah -- I have never made a crown because I'm worried about the temporary. Almost always it's because the large filling I've tried to do doesn't stay in place because it's taking too much vertical force, and I need circumferential coverage to displace the forces around the entire tooth. Also, this young buck obviously doesn't remember 3/4 and 7/8s gold crowns or gold onlays. Those were the best restorations as well as being conservative.
@AV-tm5zf2 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with the told onlays. I think technology tries to "fit" the best options when they dont look back what really works. Now these days its about finances and products. Modern dentistry isnt always smart dentistry. _retired DH

I’m 63 and my front teeth had broken because of age, so my only option was to have crowns. My bite was also way off. Most of my adult life, my two middle front bottom tooth were hitting underneath my two front teeth because my but was not correct. My dentist adjusted my upper bicuspids by lengthening them with crowns to correct that problem. So in my case, crowns were a wonderful way to get my smile back. But you still have to be careful and look at your X-rays if a dentist is recommending crown because my husband has healthy beautiful teeth, and when he was in his late 40’s, a dentist told him he needed crowns on EVERY TOOTH! That was an absolute lie. He’s 63 and has had approximately 5 fillings and his teeth are perfect. So you do have to be careful, just as this dentist is saying.

The amount of enamel being removed for my crown really worried me, but at least I got a zirconia one made in one appointment. So, I think less got removed than if I had done it another way. I'll only do major dental work if I felt it absolutely necessary, and I believe it was. i use to go to an old lady dentist , she said i had decay (not visible but she insisted) she said i needed fillings in the front six teeth (minus the front 2) and i was young so i was hoping my grandmother would pick the right choice for my future ... long story short ALL my fillings fell out so she did it again . guess what , all fell out . she blamed it on where i was born , and said “some cities are not financially stable as others or something like that insisting that my teeth cannot hold fillings because the water i drank growing up wouldn’t allow my teeth to hold fillings, and she later refused to do my fillings and left me worse than when i came to her . it’s about 5 years later and i just got my right side done (thank god not from her ) and it got me thinking .. did my old dentist lie to me .. can i sue her for fucking up my teeth ? please respond back
@heliotropezzz3336 жыл бұрын
I don't know whether you can sue. You'd probably need to get some independent evidence or assessment that your dentistry was badly done or not needed at all, in order to sue. I would say to people, if a dentist says you need work and you can see nothing wrong, ask to see the evidence of the problem, and if they can't produce something that satisfies you, get a second opinion from another dentist (not one known to the first dentist). I understand as a child how it's difficult to challenge a dentist.

This video has many errors of omission and I think it risks divisiveness for the dental profession and engenders patient distrust in their dentists. He positions himself as someone doing more considered work than other dentists which isn't necessarily the case. Most dentists consider veneers, crowns, composite veneers, bleaching etc for anterior aesthetics and restoration of damaged teeth and can provide all of these. Our ethical principle of "first do no harm" applies here and all but a slim minority take our roles seriously and don't overprepare teeth when we don't need to. We don't aimlessly hack teeth down for crowns unjustifiably and a good crown prep should not remove the entirety of the dental enamel present. I think this is really an advert for his clinic. While seems like a genuinely nice guy, it comes across as him saying you can trust me over all these other destructive dentists! He's correct that we historically (decades ago) preferred crowns due to the improved wrap around grip they provided when our cements/glues weren't as strong. However, a majority of dentists now accept that our glues are so extremely strong enough these days that we routinely bond/glue ceramic veneers, and provide minimal preparations. The way this video presents itself is to the detriment of trust in the dental profession. In any profession you get bad work of course but I'd think the huge majority of dentists are aware of the pros and cons of each treatment option and are willing to discuss these openly with our patients. The same day dentistry he advocates has its caveats too so I disagree that the suggestion of a temporary restoration is a bad choice. Typically same day dentistry means a machine mills the crown/veneer from a uniform block of strong material so you can have it fitted same/next day which is great; functionally these are strong and effective restorations. But the downside is that you could alternatively have a more attractive result with an experienced lab technician who could spend hours with your photographs constructing a bespoke, characterised individual restoration for your tooth. So just because someone suggests a temporary crown doesn't mean they're doing bad dentistry at all, if the work goes to a top class lab it could mean your result is far better with all of the details of the tooth recreated. We send all our lab work out because the lab is exceptionally good and can provide us a restoration that surpasses anything we could make in office. So milling in office is more convenient but in no other way is it necessarily superior.

i guess they also dont seem to remember kind of a lot of people do not have dental good enough to just bust into this amazing dental office with no temporary crowns/bridges, i dont think there is one in my entire state, which means it must be new which means it costs more then whatever i just paid for a bridge across like 6 front teeth (i believe i paid 9,000 dollars so far, the vast majority of people just can't afford dental work being done at all) the only reason i have mine done now is because my sister put it on her credit card, the only reason i let her is because i watched the horror my wife went through having to have all her teeth pulled out even though they could be have been fixed, but we just couldn't afford it, the cost of this work is just to high, i dont think there is any justification for an hour and a half of work to cost more then an average vehicle does, i get it, they need to pay off student loans and all of that, but that is rubbish, because at the price i'm paying if they somehow accumulated a million dollars of debt in student loans you'd only have to do 100 bridges to pay all of that off

Really hate myself.. Family convinced me to go to a dental school to save some money... And it seemed nice at first, kinda trusted them, they took care of fillings I needed.. Then I was planning to get more major work done at my original dentist, like implants or fixing my front teeth.. Well the dental student/teacher managed to convince me to let them do more for me.. Originally the said they could do crowns, but then they swapped me to a different student.. and they ended up proposing dentures to replace my 4 front upper teeth, that had apple-cored quite a lot.. I trusted them, so I assumed those teeth just needed to be pulled at that point.. So I let them do it.. (I really regret it cause how hard they were for them to pull out, worst experience of my life..) And now I REALLY wish I had gone to another dentist for a second opinion.. Cause after looking into it, those teeth probably could have been saved.. Even worse, they had to blunt down the tips of my lower front teeth, in an attempt to make the dentures fit better, but that was a bust, and now I've lost my sharp lower teeth, and can't break food with them like I used too.. The dentures they ended up giving me were unwearable, couldn't eat or talk with them, I refuse to wear those... More money down the drain and now I'm toothless.. I've been depressed for an entire year since.. I frequently wake up screaming/sobbing about my teeth..

The reason why the tooth tissue needs to be removed has no relationship to wether the crown is temporary(plastic) or permanent. It is removed so that there is space for the crown itself thus it cannot be avoided. Crowns are a very good solution in cetain cases. For example- teeth which have had multiple obturations and are very carries unresistant - a well made crown can preserve this tooth and put an end to countless dental apointments for new obturations. Another example a tooth with only a few walls left of the crown wich is very prone to fracture. Also a bridge of crowns can stabilize teeth which are shaky and prevent extractions. Ofcourse putting a crown on a healthy tooth just for estetic purposes is a horrible idea due to the reasons stated in the video. The end result of a treatment with a well made crown in a lab and a crown made with the new technology machines is not much different. Thats is beeing real on the subject. peace!
@anu101495 жыл бұрын
I agree. He needs to clarify specifically that he is talking about conservative issues like esthetics or small decay. And youre right, the preparations are done not because of temporary but so thats theres room of the crown and that it is less prone to fracture. Thin veneers fracture too!
@theroadtomastery1238 ай бұрын
Well, in my case, I had to extract 5 and 7, and 6 was missing for a long time, so the only solution was to do the bridge. After examination of my bite, the dentist said that 3, 4 and 8 will have to carry the bridge, because I have a strong bite, so to be on the safer side. She didn't want to include 3, but ended up doing so to be on the safer side. So yeah, sometimes you DO need to put a crown on some of the front teeth. And you never mentioned this situation, which I believe is also quite common.

My teeth are not thick and I would like to retain the real tooth structure as much as possible and my dentist ia able to do it without any issues. I had one tooth with root canal (no crown) and it shattered after 10 years just by me eating an egg roll. This incident led me to think of having crowns on teeth that are prone to get cavities but without rooth canal and it has worked great. My dentist also make sure that the crown have the exact shape of my orginal tooth so that the new crown won't change my bite unless the bite needs to be corrected, then he asjusr the crown (not manipukating the opposite good teeth).

@brianlee51325 жыл бұрын
The non aggressive approach and more conservative approach would be "fillings or bonding". If someone comes on with a small chipped front tooth, a small decay, then a filling would make more sense because with a filling/bonding, there would still be some drilling prior to bonding, but its much more minimal than prepping for a crown. The downside is, a filling in the front tooth has a higher tendency to breaking or chipping. However, it can be rebonded if that were to ever happen. I would say maybe 1/4 time that happens

I happily declined having the front teeth crown, I’ll just continue to get the bonding redone.
