Hi Ashley. It's a bit high tech. I use a Zefal Z-eye. It sticks on your bike helmet and has a convex mirror attached to a stalk. You need to add some extra tape to keep it (mine's still in place after 8 years). The image is small (convex mirror) but the advantage is that it moves with your head so from your eye's point of view it does not vibrate. Also as you move your head from side to side you can scan a huge area behind. As you say it is not a 100% replacement for looking behind. I find it indispensable. Sometimes I forget when out walking and try to look at it to see what's behind even when it's not there (muscle memory). Costs about £10.

I've mentioned this in the first video but this is a good reason to keep your old phone when replacing it with a newer one. You can then put your old phone to good use for something like this and keep your new phone free for other cycling functions such as sat nav, speedometer or whatever. Or just put your newer phone away and save wear and tear on it.

A combination of rear-facing radar such as a Garmin Varia paired to a proper head unit such as a Garmin 530/830/1030 is much safer in my view. I wouldn’t want to spend the required time staring down at an image on a phone and process what I see. The radar detects vehicles approaching from behind and you get an audible notification on the head unit, plus a visual one which illustrates the distance. For recording footage, Cycliq Fly cameras are excellent for both forward and rear facing units.

@@AshleyNeal-JustCycling does this mean some longer rides on national limit country roads? I find that's where the Varia comes into its own. It allows you to relax and not worry about missing an approaching vehicle. In town there's just too much traffic for it to be much benefit, I don't bother with it for those sort of trips, just a mirror does the job.

Just a thought ( I'm no expert) as the comms with the phone is WIFI part of the delay/freezing may be partly due to the phone, there will likely be a delay in the camera processing the image but the phone may have it's part to play as well.

Lag is enough to make this a no goer for the cost you could do the same with any WiFi enabled action cam like the brave 7le or get a small mini HDMI screen for a wired connection. Ultimately a helmet mounted mirror work really well and handle bar ones work if a bit prone to vibrations

Just fit a mirror or a pair of bar end mirrors. Cheap, no lag or freezing, no batteries to charge, no bags, no wires and highly likely not to get nicked. Real time rear vision. When I returned to cycling after many years of motorcycling I felt naked without mirrors. It confirmed what I already knew: that I use my mirrors a lot.

I prefer my wing mirrors on my dutchie bike. No lag, not as valuable as well. Also its easier to mount and repair. I do recommend to all riders to have at least one wing mirror because it really helps out with spotting dangers from behind, and if you ever do something silly like i do which is riding on very fast moving dual carriageway, seeing whats behind you is a must.

Tiny screen, push button or touch screen to display 30 seconds of live rear view. That's all I need. I'm even willing to run wires to reduce feed latency. Using my phone drains the batteries too quickly and I don't need a constant rear view. I currently use a hand mirror (usually used by atv enthusiasts).

Hi Ashley, I thought you were being overly generous with your review after seeing the lag and the freezes, but it good to see these things in action rather than a picture in a sales display. I was getting interested with the memory card side of it, but the earlier comments I mentioned has put me off. I have one already which I bought from Amazon UK. This one has a very small camera that is permanently fixed at the back of the bike, with a wire running to the front monitor. (which is where the batteries are). It comes with a little monitor that is fastened to the handle bars with a little bracket and the monitor is also the battery pack and you just plug it in to recharge it using a Micro SD cable. (a 'C' cable would have been better. It doesn't have a memory card slot, so you cannot record on it like the one you are showing which would have made it perfect for me. The camera plugs and unplugs into the monitor with a 3.5 headphones type plug and the monitor also detaches from the bracket for you to put in your bag or pocket till you come back and all that is showing is a little bracket that stays on the bike, so nothing really shows if you leave your bike. I agree with you about still looking around and over your shoulder as that is very good advice and is what I do but I mainly use mine whilst riding on straight runs when I just keep an eye on what is behind me and I can also see when a car is about to overtake me so I am prepared for it. Most mirrors (for me anyway) don't stick out far enough. and so I find myself having to move my body over slightly to see past myself. (I also had this problem on my motorbike and I'm not a big bloke). So good review and keep them coming. 👍👍👍👍

I've used bar-end mirrors and helmet mirrors, but the best, most stable image is achieved with my spectacle-mounted plane mirror. It's the least vibration of the 3 and doesn't give a minified image like bar-mirrors do. Ooh, and it's real-time and never needs recharging.

Loads of camerae have offered this for ages including Fly 6 and Technologic. The issue is always the same - inevitable lag means that its really bad for actual judgements on road positioning / identification of impending danger Basically, cameras are good for post incident documenting/evidence and for making YT videos where you can align the times retrospectively - but they will never be a good "mirror" if they're relying on wifi connection and processing via an app to display the image to you. To even call it a mirror is misleading. You would actually be much better off just mounting the phone higher and running the selfie cam directed behind you - at least that would give you a pretty much lag-free view.

You should try a radar like Garmin or Magine. If you want to borrow one to test/demo let me know and I'll dop you an E-mail I've got one without the light I keep as a spare, I've even got an old Garmin edge 1000 headunit somewhere it will probably need a power bank attached in use as the internal battery is long past its best though. Another thing I've been using on solo rides this season is something called a Pass-Pixi its basically just a small Hi-Viz speed camera sigh that attaches to your back with magnets to let those behind know you are running a camera, Its surprising how many motorists become super patient when they know their actions are being recorded, sad state of affairs really but it is what it is 🤷‍♂
@RenAigu
@RenAigu 10 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, with encoding video streams and the issues that low latency wifi streaming can have in the best conditions, let alone in an urban environment with all kinds of radio noise, I don't think the delay and the freezing can be improved dramatically with software. It's kind of inherent to the technologies used. So for someone with mobility issues this shouldn't be marketed as a mirror replacement.
@hebijirik
@hebijirik 10 ай бұрын
I like it as a camera setup. The image looks good and I like the powerbank idea - rather than buying a uselessly small battery and charging circuits in the camera I can pair it with a powerbank of the size and weight I want to use. But I have to disagree with the use as a mirror. For a large speed difference by the time you notice a car is coming it is already next to you .Lets say the car is going 90kph, you just 18kph, the difference is 20 m/s. The lens seems fairly wide (good for dashcam function) so a car 20 meters behind you is a small portion of your screen. And yet that car is in fact alreay at your rear wheel by the time you see it as a tiny car on the screen if the lag is just 1 second and the feed never freezes. And the speeds in this example is a normal country road slightly uphill and a car following CZ speed limit for a country road (they go a bit faster most times here). So not an unusual scenario. To me that makes it unsafe to use as a mirror. Even if you think you can keep the lag in mind one day you might slip up and act on what you are seeing without remembering the lag. If you have limited mobility that prevents you from twisting your neck enough to see behind you can always use a mirror. If your bike configuration has no good spot for a mirror you can use a mirror for your glasses or helmet. Those are tiny, but as they are so close to your eye the view angle is just as big as on a car side mirror. And you can point it by turning your head, I use this regularly when watching a curved road behind me. No lag in the image, no risk of batteries running low, tiny weight, low cost. I would always recommend this over trying a phone screen with a camera connected by wifi. And lastly this is just very slightly related to the topic: when they build fully enclosed record breaking recumbents for the Battle Mountain World Human Power Speed Challenge they sometimes optimize the aero drag so much that front window is impossible and a camera-screen setup is used. For years those were incredibly tricky to balance and steer even for veteran riders of these crazy fast machines until the technology improved so much that the lag was reduced to low tens of miliseconds. Then it finally was good enough to have more successfull launches than crashes. BTW the current record for speed achieved by human power on the flat, no motorized vehicle breaking the air up in front of you, just a fully faired bike with one human inside, is 144 kph. Average for 200m with flying start after accelerating for about 5km. From a few hundred watts of power of one human. Thats what I call efficiency 🙂.

Some e-bikes have a USB out or accessory power connection. If the camera system can be wired into that, then I think it could be quite useful for recording evidence. I would ignore the mirror 'feature' though, it's a gimmick in my opinion. Safety equipment that cannot be relied upon is worse than no safety equipment at all. Get a mirror instead - I've tried many and can recommend the Busch & Muller CycleStar range, they are excellent.

It looks like a good bit of kit and should help cyclists keep an eye out for danger from behind. My car dashcam, a Thinkware F200 doesn't have a display and relies on WiFi for if I want a live view and it suffers with the same delay as you're seeing on your cam. My only criticism though, is it looks like the rear view on your camera is a mirror image. Is that how the raw footage looks or is it just the editing in this video?

Off settign the camera onto the seat stays is possible. I even though about using the rear derailleur mount to house a metal mount for it.

I'm interested, but I'd want a dedicated display rather than my cell phone. I need my cell phone for too many other things, such as maps, and when the cell phone is receiving calls or doing other things it would likely cause performance issues. A question, though: What is that black-and-grey mount seen at 0:43 that has ball joints at each end, one for a go-pro mount? I use equipment like that but it's designed more for U.S. motorcycles and is somewhat overkill for bicycles. What size is the ball? 25mm (1 inch)? I might want to see if I can find one like that in the U.S.

Ashley, are you getting paid to promote this gadget? There's so much that can go wrong never mind theft or the risk to your phone that may cost over a thousand bucks itself from the weather or anything else unexpected. If you're going to be in traffic on open roads with no separation from traffic you really need two good mirrors on both handlebars. I've repeated this so often because I use two motorbike mirrors on my bike and they are bloody magnificent. About 10 bucks from Amazon. Yes, I shop around for the bargains! You can see what's behind you all the time on one or both whether you're going around a bend or straight ahead. They keep you constantly informed. The hi-tech options may be cool but sometimes what's simple and just works is the best option. I've tried dinky little bar end mirrors and in comparison they are very limited in they're effectiveness. I'm more concerned with my personal SAFETY on my bike than keeping my bike "minimalist". Just get two good motorcycle mirrors, stick them on your bike and do a review and you will just have to admit that there is nothing better. No lag, no batteries, no fear of constant theft. Add your hi-tech separately but just go sensible and old school please. You know it's the right thing to do.
