It's often important not to forget that history in school is divided between american, state and local history through various grades. It's eeked out in bits to suit the grade levels. Anything beyond that is floated to elective classes one can take in high school and beyond. While it's important to be inclusive about the good and bad in US and state history, there is a lot of it and to decry missed opportunities that we, we could have, ourselves missed out of in learning this stuff, is on us. This in-depth history is available in school, if only as an elective. If one to ignore the many options in university, well that's because we really didn't care, and that has to be learned this way, or by our elders.

The Lumber people are very interesting and have an amazing history of self betterment and growth. They have had a history of independence when many native peoples did not. From the 1500"s onward they were never subjected the the level of outside control that most others were. They had their own bank and their own university. Most were literate long before most other native people were. And the Lumbees were often looked on and accepted as regular members of society long before others. Thanks for letting me rant on. Peace

My state has a law requiring you to go to the Sheriff and get a permit to buy a pistol. It is a Jim Crow law that is still on the books. My Father kept his first pistol permit as a memento. On it, part of the text says that the permit holder is "known to the Sheriff to be of good character." In reality, it was a way to prevent Black people from buying guns. Most of my state's Legislature was elected in part because of their supposed pro gun stance, but there has been no move whatsoever to get rid of this Jim Crow law.

@Aniquin NC also for a while was one of the states that required you to either get permission or inform (forgot which) your CLEO of machine gun purchases regardless of what the current federal legislation was at the time (ie: trust could avoid CLEO). actually, that still might be the case, NC isn't an incredibly pro-gun state but it's still not as bad as like NJ, NYC, or Cali. it's honestly just not a good state overall. too many people, not enough land, cities aren't *really* cities, humid, income tax, very much so a purple state with corrupt official on all sides, poorly funded public education system with many politicians being anti-education. the whole state I attribute to being like a "rural home owners association."

@@markfergerson2145 I would like to highlight here that Pelosi's challenger from the left, Shahid Buttar, is a 2nd amendment advocate of sorts, but one very different from conservatives who do not thing beyond the right to own guns, nor similar to liberals who believe no good can be achieved with it. As a constitutional lawyer he takes it as given that American citizens living in the United States and its territories have a right to own firearms and he further affirms that the 2nd amendment is a recognition of a right to resist tyranny by other "arms" as well, which has been eroded by the paramilitarization of police to become enforcers of the state who firearms are simply insufficient to resist when they enforce tyranny. He has further affirmed that gun control without concommittant disarming of police has further eroded that right to resist tyranny. Here's him discussing it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/anLTiJhuiK2shbs And here's him outlining his views in writing: truthout.org/articles/ferguson-and-the-second-amendment/ He has been advocating this nuanced view of the 2nd amendment for years and he could use help spreading it further.

@Russian Bot #568984Normally I would agree on 1st Amendment grounds. But the gathering was with the INTENT to cause a riot. The quote by the "leader" admits to wanting to cause fear. That's literally terrorism.
@neurofiedyamato87634 жыл бұрын
@Russian Bot #568984 The "gathering" was a predecessor to an attack. This isn't the first time KKK done shit like this. They have a rally, then at the climax of their gathering, they burn some house down and kill some minorities. Then burn their cross and run off. It may be unprovoked in the strictest sense, but everyone know what would have happened if the Lumbee were unarmed and not resisting. The specifics doesn't mean much if you ignore the context. The KKK is a violent group that have killed plenty before

@kingemocut4 жыл бұрын
@@johnnypopulus5521 more firearms just means terrorists get easier access to said firearms. it's not impossible to own them in the UK, but they're very tightly controlled. there's a reason terrorists have to resort to machetes and vehicular methods for their attacks, thus meaning the body count is a lot less than what it could be. not only that, but there's not really a desire for firearms among the population. in fact, it's one of the issues that is pretty much agreed with between the vast majority, irregardless of politics.

I have no clue why this randomly showed up in my feed, but am I ever glad it did. I am a Yankee transplant from the horrid state of CT that moved to North Carolina about five years ago. I have come to realize that I was raised in the wrong part of the country. I work for an armed courier service and my routes take me through Pembroke, Red Springs, Fairmont, St. Paul's.......the heart of this very Lumbee nation. Interact with these fine people all the time. Many people in these areas are "poor", but they have a wealth we should all strive to attain. I can't really describe sufficiently, the friendliness and love they have for each other and I always feel welcome, like welcome in a way as if I was I lifelong friends or family, even though I'm just a guy who shows up to provide a service. And, if I may be so bold, the Lumbee women I interact with are beautiful beyond belief! I'm so happy that when I return to this area tomorrow, I will do so knowing a little more about the bravery of a people I already have admiration and respect for.

Karl, I've been supportive(or rather, as supportive I can be) of InRange as a project since the very beginning. Some of my favorite content has always been the historical vignettes, and this has to be my favorite one so far. I can't wait to see what you've got in store for us. Thank you for putting out this content. I am a professionally trained historian. Throughout ten years of higher education, I didn't learn about this type of history until graduate school, and even then in only a few courses. I can count them all on one hand. This type of American history is vastly more important on balance, I think, than what is typically taught in the standard survey classes that so many of our nation's students take for a semester and totally forget later on. Historical literacy is so incredibly important, and it's incredible that you're doing this work. Please, keep it up.

Gun laws have always been written to keep firearms away from the "wrong" kind of people.
@Spetulhu4 жыл бұрын
And in the hands of the "right" people. Pointing out that Hitler made it hard or impossible for Jews and other undesirables to own guns is correct, but he also made it easier for "true Aryans" to get guns. A dictator can't win just by taking guns away, he needs armed people on his side (who then take the guns from the undesirables).
@neurofiedyamato87634 жыл бұрын
@@Spetulhu Hitler got in to power and started rounding up Jews before any gun laws were in place. In fact Nazi gun laws weren't strict at all, quite the opposite. Firearms as a self-defense against criminal is quite valid but is wholly out-dated when it comes to tyrannical governments. We aren't living in a time where the army is using similar weapon as civilian firearms. And modern military weapon is very complex that your average citizen would not know how to use competently if at all. OP is correct. Gun laws, in the past, today and in the future have always been about putting it in the right hands and keeping it away from the wrong hands. Laws have to strike a balance, where that balance lies is a point of contention. Whenever a gun law proposal is made, pro-gun people think it's complete removal of guns when that is not the case if you look at the finer details. The opposite is true, when gun laws are relaxed, the anti-gun people think it is supporting anarchy. The reality is that laws are changed to match the times we live in to strike that balance. We can strike that perfect balance but people will never be satisfied because everyone's opinion is different, even among the same camps.
