Don’t take an engine for a walk… that’s how you have wild mechanics follow you home… then you start leaving 100 octane by your back door because you feel bad… Before you know it you’ve adopted a bunch of stray mechanics

@freakineagle~ Sweet sound to my ears! My Dad was 1/4 mile Drag Boat Racer. He built all his own engines for his drag boat. The one he built in 1980 was a Chevy 454 LS-7 (7.4L) bored out to 478, had a blower and ran on Alcohol Fuel. He raced in the "Blown Alcohol Flat" division. His boat was made by the HONDO company in California; it was a v-drive with cavitation plates and prop driven. He blew past 170 MPH in 1/4 mile with that boat, like it was a walk in the park!! There is NOTHING SWEETER THAN THE SOUND OF THAT ENGINE TO ME! Dad worked as a Master Tool & Dye Maker for John Deere for 31 yrs & Mom was an elementary school teacher. We lived in a little house with lots of neighbors who LOVED when Dad would fire up the engine when he was dialing it in before a race! :-) Neighbors two blocks away, still joke about how some of their pictures fell off their walls when Dad started the engine! HAHAHA! When Dad retired from racing, he sold the boat to a young racer, but kept the engine fully intact. It's been sitting in his garage on a custom made engine block, covered up with sheets and an engine cover for the past 20 years!! He'll soon be 83 years old and I wish to God I could get some help to set up a temporary Tach, Alcohol Fuel Tank and Battery ...like what you've done here! It would make my Dad so happy, he'd cry! Now I need to find a couple of people to help me figure how to do this for him! I am so happy I saw your video, thank you so much for sharing Hotrod Ronnie! ~~Christy~~

@@mattg392 The original 454 SS Chevelle in 1970 was coded as an "LS 6" not the same thing as a newbie thinks of today. It was a big block with solid lifters rated 450 HP from the factory. Probably more like 550 but they underrated because of new regs passed by the GOVT butting in with everything. That part we still have today the closer we get to socialism or flat out communism.

My Uncle Jim built an L88 454 for his Mandela Racing Boat he bought back in the mid 1960's... He put it all together by hand. He later bored it out to a 468 and put a roller cam in it with a Hollie double pumper in it and it puts out around 700 horse power now. It's still one of the fastest boats on his lake. Nice engine my friend and nice and throaty also.

Coming home from my mom's family's farm one Sunday, 1971--we got stopped at a red light, on Grand River Ave, I saw a Harvest Gold '71 'Vette, with the L-88 type hood over the engine--it HAD LS-7 badges ON the hood. It was a test car, from the GM Proving Grounds, in Milford, Michigan. You should have HEARD the "lope" that motor had! The ONLY thing close to it I ever HEARD was the State Police cars from that era, with I believe a 426 (wedge) "Interceptor"--THOSE cars ALSO had engines with that "lope!" LOL. My mom had relatives who WORKED at the Grounds--as a kid, my uncle (test driver) used to stop by, in '66 and '67 Chevelle Super Sports, 4 speed, (Hurst shifters!) redline wide ovals, 396 375hp motors. THEY had "lopey" engines--didn't realize it as a 10/11 year old, the boys in the Chevy Garage had likely PUT the 425 hp 396 'Vette cams in 'em! lol

Perhaps Baldwin used the LS 7, but they got it from Tonawanda Engine facility or Chevy parts. The engine was never used in any Corvette and was strictly sold as a crate "off road use only" complete from oil pan to high rise alum intake with a bright red placard taped to the intake stating the of road use only warning. @ 12.5 to 1, it was never a road use motor. Many of Baldwin's cars were based on the LS 6 & LS 5. Joel Rosen built a lot of strong hot-rods, having owned 3 at different times along with Yenko's but the only LS 7 I ever saw in a car was a buddy's 70 Chevelle SS 396 (402) and he built that car after ordering the motor from a local Chevy dealer in Ft.Walton Florida in 1976.

12.5:1 compression, huge solid lift cam, forged TRW's, square port heads with 2.19's (or 2.25's) and 1.88's, 4 bolt mains, 7/16 rod bolts and I'm guessing 2 x 650's sitting on top of that tunnel ram. That's about 700 horsepower and somewhere in the neighborhood of 625 lb ft of torque ready to get down right there. Every man needs to drive something with a big block in it at some point in his life.
