🐒 SCARED FOR HIS LIFE! 500HP VAUXHALL ASTRA VXR REVIEW
The Astra H VXR engine (Z20LEH) is a development of the Astra G’s Z20LET power unit. Rather than simply diving straight in with remaps, we stripped an engine down to component form to examine its internals and get a real feel for what has been done. One of the main differences is the block has been equipped with oil spray jets. These jets cool the pistons by spraying oil at the underside of the piston. These oil spray jets were added for manufacturer's durability reasons because the LEH engine produces 240PS as standard (where the LET engine only produced 200PS), and not because, contrary to internet myth, the factory Z20LEH engine runs lean. In fact the Z20LEL and Z20LER engines used in Astra H run at the same target lambda value from the factory as the Z20LEH engine, and the LEL/LER engines do not have under piston cooling.
The pistons themselves are high yield forged items with the skirts Teflon coated to reduce noise and wear. Gone are the Z20LET’s counter rotating balancer shafts. This sharpens response whilst helping the engine rev much more quickly. At the top end the inlet manifold is revised however this revision is across the whole of the MK5 engine range, the VXR though getting new larger injectors. The turbo charger is a hybrid item, equipped with a better A/R ratio and stronger bearings. The manifold it has been built into is cast in a higher yield of material making it less prone to cracking. This turbo unit has been available for a while now from Vauxhall and we have already used many times on the Astra G and the VX220 with good results.
Once we had established the above we then under took mapping our first VXR. The results are very good, however we could not take the car any further than this on the standard intercooler. So extensive cooling modifications were investigated and developed for the next level of power, to ensure the longevity of the engine and surrounding components.
The Vauxhall Astra VXR is a high-performance derivative of the popular GTC Coupe. It’s called an Astra, instead of a GTC, because Vauxhall is keen to highlight the difference between the two models. The VXR is a much more aggressive and performance-orientated car and under the bonnet lies a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that produces 276bhp, allowing the VXR to accelerate from 0-60mph in just 5.9 seconds.
Many may not be entirely familiar with the VXR brand and that’s understandable because it’s not as well-established as the likes of Volkswagen’s GTI moniker. Originally the VXR name was launched with the Lotus Elise-based VXR220 Turbo. The badge and appropriate development was then applied to more mainstream models like the Corsa, Insignia and even the Meriva.
Those looking for rear-wheel-drive performance cars weren’t left wanting either, with cars like the VXR8 also included in the range. The first version of the Astra VXR was launched in 2005 and met with average reviews with criticisms being aimed mostly at an overly stiff ride and a general lack of polish. Its performance was unquestionable though and it attracted many fans thanks to its power and speed.
Volker Strycek, the head of VXR product development and a former race driver, made it clear about what his team wanted to achieve with this Astra VXR. “Our goal was quite simple: to be the best in segment.” Vauxhall also hopes this generation of Astra VXR will become the best-selling model.

Mines only 300bhp, gets full send 90% of the times I get in and it still makes me smile even 3 years on. With a Remus or Piper they’re such a good sounding 4 cylinder. The rear anti roll bar should have come standard though, makes a huge difference to the amount the car tries to throw you in a ditch on the bends without it.

Astra VXR'S are one of the most underrated hot hatches out there, I love mine and the fact it is shocking what badge snobbery you can surprise with these, my EVO couldn't even compete on a long straight with it. when done right they are absolutely no joke.

People fail to forget in its day it was the fastest hot hatch around the nurburgring. Not exactly a track lacking corners. Everyone jumped on the Clarkson bandwagon when he said they understeered, turned out the car on test was a dummy.

Had a few mk4 gsi z20's and a couple of vxr's, great little engines and easy to get reliable power from if done properly. Most I had was 347bhp, that was quick so I imagine 500 is pretty mental 🤯😂 Great video and editing as usual 👌

Personally I liked the proprotional content split here. i don't know anything about these so a crash course was appreciated. Then John having a blast was a perfect balance and the voice overs of the driving experience tells me this'd be completely wasted on me, and would exceed any skills I thought I had in about five minutes. The owners face whn Jon was on it, he wasn't sure but so of the times he looked like he was injoying it and was wanted to smile, I dnt think he's been in the passenger seat of It whn being driven in anger lol. My m8 whn we was 17,18 had a blue 1.2 nova with no rev limiter and absolutely screaming the life out of it in 4th gear it would do 110mph and thn whn you put it in 5th it slowed dwn to 100mph so it got dropped bk dwn to 4th a he screamed the life out of it lol thay were the days, just as stuff like ANPR cameras were coming in so it was abit more doable and cameras wasn't about as much. A well cool motor. I remember people stuffing Calibre Turbo engines into the Mk1 Astras and then tweaking them back in the '90s. They looked well cool with the Irmscher kits on them. Some of the Mk1s were badged as Opel Kaddetts.

For the price and the fun factor I'd recommend one. Mine is only 300bhp but it can still put a big smile on my face. But i just like pissing people off with bangs and how loud it is.. pure asbo car

@@monkylondon The GTC VXR J is a A20NFT Engine and is a GM design. Not very tuneable and the overall car does not have the fun characteristics of the Astra H. Try one you’ll surely agree.

Sick. Reminds me of my mk3 2.0t GSI Astra i had when i was younger, same colour aswell. That thing used to munch m3's all day long and sound better. The shock on people's faces was hilarious when you went tearing past there £50k motors.
