You need that slack when the engines cold because all the aluminium expands with heat and grows , tightening the belt . Too tight cold and bye bye money !

Cold motor slack belt as the heat come in expansion happens and the belt tightens a bit.

@@MrHBSoftware With respect I think you are wrong. We use the handle of a hammer to leaver the idler out to put tension on the belt on our door slammer on a cold motor. We very rarely brake belts.

Called backing down. Baring the engine backwards removes any fuel in the cylinders and prevents hydraulic lock.
