Insane Avalanche (scary) - tragic accident

Please guys be careful when heading into back country terrain. Avalanches can occurs even in familiar environments as shown here in the end if he video in a tragic accident. It’s not clear if the hospitalized rider survived or not.

I got caught in an avalanche luckily when it finally stopped my head was above ground, but my arms and legs felt like they were cast in concrete, i couldnt move them at all. Its amazing how the snow just froze rock solid around me

Amazing. Despite the blue sky, the wind along the ridge seems to indicate that slope was still being loaded at the time of the accident. I think wind-loaded slopes like that are the number one danger near where I live.

This is a major failure of avalanche control, that slope should have been bombed and should have avi barriers up on it Edit- To clarify, most comments on this page place criminal blame on the snowboarder. In my limited opinion the ski patrol also carry a lot of responsibility due to a total lack of avi control on a loaded face running fall-line into a ski lift and a busy unloading area. Peace!

given the proximity to the ski lift, that area should definitely have been "bombed" prior to opening up the section of the mountain, Its directly above the lift...! Having said that, the run is right in the middle of a shallow bowl at roughly 35-40º incline which is the sweet spot for triggering slides and he should have known. The rule is that you don't ride into open spaces with virgin snow without checking the snow conditions. 10min into that and he is dead..

Its a MIRACLE he went between the two rocks and survived a pure 18 metres drop off inside the avalanche! That guy lives a second life...if not even 3rd! Never fully trust in-bound control... mother nature or someone's mistake can risk your life! You can see at least 4 people near the lift falling to the ground before the avalanche even arrives and 1 guy on the right. It's not just this video, I see it everywhere.

From a viewer’s perspective, some 9 people were buried in that last clip, I hope they were all safely recovered - and uninjured. Yes, I agree that the snow should have been bombed in that area, but also riders have a responsibility to not endanger others in the vicinity of their actions. I say that riding that drop was reckless, given the prevailing conditions. It’s too easy to blame others, and in my humble opinion, the liability in this instance is shared. Thanks for posting…

Freshly fallen snow weighs around 50 Kilograms per cubic meter, however when you are burried 3 meter deep the snow is way more compact and could weigh over 200 Kilograms per cubic meter.

@@louisegogel7973 fortunately my friends were nearby and saw my glove wiggling as I was reaching up when I got buried.but I was only stuck for over 10 minutes. I could hardly breathe my foot was almost touching the back of my head. If my glove wasnt out of the surface it might have been a long time before anyone knew where I was. I learned that avalanche snow becomes hardened and heavy as soon as it settles stops. There was about 5 of us on the slope that day I'm glad it wasnt any larger

Let's be clear! The boarder is not in the wrong. Not even a little bit. Ski Patrol should never allow a lift to start moving if there's a slab like this. Even if they bombed it (doesn't look like they did) and got nothing, you don't just open it. You wait till it's safe. Not a crowd-pleasing decision, but it is simple

a perfect sliding cut near the top of a steeper slope loaded with fresh powder snow . perfect way to start a avalanche. if he knew..... he should have gone directly over on to the other ridge to safety as the video shows he would have reached there before the slide could take him down instead he turned back into the slide unfortunately. surprising people at the bottom lift just stood there instead of moving sideways to get out of the slide pathway. if the snowboarder made it out alive after all the rock/obstacles that would be a miracle.

Well it was in slow motion, even in real time you would still wait a beat to make sure it was safe to start searching. I worked AC for years, and it’s always a good idea start searching as soon as it safe to do so to prevent adding to the missing.

That is completely the riders fault. The rider chose to ride there, and in so doing accepts the potential consequences. If memory serves this was a heavily wind loaded slope, obvious to anyone there, and that rider went out into it anyway; stupid move. Avy awareness is everyone's personal responsibility.

And I'd say that a person stupid enough to drop into a loaded slope is responsible for all the consequences downstream of what they cause. Read your lift ticket, safety is the responsibility of the individual, not the company running the hill. Risk is part of the equation, it's the cost of admission.
