Today I have an insane before and after transformation on this 1975 MG MGB for this weeks episode of Wicked Classic Cars. I found this car via a classic car group for Orange County CA on facebook and fished around for some cars to work. My client reached out to me with her little MG and it fit the build perfectly!
This 1975 MG MGB has a pearly red single stage paint job. The owner had a 76 MG as her first car and decided 30 years later to buy the same exact color but 1 year earlier, a 1975 MG MGB. Pretty cool to have your first car back in your adult life. She's now here for some classic car paint correction to get this ride looking wicked!
This car has extremely dull and reasonably low quality paint, it is likely a repaint judging by the massive burn mark on the fender by the headlight. I measured it at random readings all over the place which is typical and I also removed the rear luggage rack so I could correct the entire trunk area easily. I am going to do a two step paint correction to this vehicle with shine supply classic cut and shine supply classic polish. It has a lot of haze, water spotting, chemical damage and swirl marks particularly notable on the hood/bonnet. I was unable to remove some of this haze with compounding and polishing and it kept coming back. I could not figure out why it was coming back whether I touched the paint with a panel prep or just left it alone, so I called a few friends to try and gather some info as I have never encountered this. Their guess was that it had chemical damage at some point and it left some permanent etching that just would not go away. The paint still glossed up brilliantly well after paint correction and a layer of Artdeshine Graphene wax. It seriously looks like a whole new vehicle and a totally different color car. If you watch to end you'll hear our customer tell us how much she loves her car and that is looks amazing. This was a pretty cool car to work on and massive before and after transformation.
Detailing projects like these are the jobs that make me passionate about what I do which is why I continue to do these types of cars weekly and publish them here on KZbin. The 1975 MG MGB has a little 4 cylinder engine that barely makes any horse power but with that tiny rear wheel drive body style, i am sure it is a blast to drive through the twisties as are many tiny 2 seater vehicles from years past.
If you would like your classic car detailed and featured on this channel be sure to contact us and let us know! We would love to add your classic vehicle to the episodes on our channel and restore shine with added protection for years to come.

For the plastic rear windows/eisenglass use NOVUS plastic polishes. 👍 The car is missing SS wheel trim rings

I apologize for the multiple posts -- but here's another - The wheels are original design and color. Don't do any "glazing" on these. If you want to clean these up, just repaint the black and silver, and replace the lug nuts with new ones. You can also add what was called "trim rings" made of aluminum and add a sharp, classy look to the wheels.

My daughter has a 1972 MGB roadster. I find that securing the top fastenings manually can be a challenge. I use pliers to carefully stretch the fabric and a small rubber mallet really does the trick.

ALso - you need to loosen the front of the soft top and partially unfold it before attaching the D rings and hooks.

Ever notice on MGBs that the trunk never looks like it fits just right? The body gap is inconsistent and I suppose reflective of the limited precision manufacturing capability at the time although other manufacturers seemed able to do this. I had a 73 that I had a love/hate relationship with. That little 1800 cc 4 banger cast iron engine almost seems ridiculous by today's standards. Still, when the car was tuned properly (that meant the valves were properly adjusted and the twin SU carbs were synced, the car was a lot of fun to drive. Not fast by any standard... but nimble, and there are few things more fun than a top down on a twisty country road in an MG. To be young again...

What's your secret to getting the compound stage completed so quickly? To compound that with the issues it had, would of taken me twice the time you took.

Knowing your product and how far you need to go! 1-2 drops of classic cut from shine supply breaks down and cuts hard in 6-7 overlaps. Being that this is single stage paint I’m not chasing any deep scratches. Over the years I’ve learned also what customers can and can’t see. I’m not looking to impress other detailers just my clients, once you figure this out, work becomes a lot easier, but also 6 years of doing the same thing all day long. My employee has 12 years and he finishes compounding his side of the car and the rear end generally before I’m 1/2 down my side. Even I am not the fastest lol

@@WickedAutoDetailing you do amazing work and love the videos. In the very short time I've been doing this, strictly as a side hustlle, I've learned most folks don't see the imperfections like we do. Most, event if they used an inspection light, still couldn't see what our eye picks up. I'm trying to transition to doing more paint enhancements than doing full corrections based on that and that a majority of the clients I have, just don't want to take the time to wash the vehicle afterwards.

Wonder if the paint was just badly dried out. Watched a video recently with with Mike on auto geek about meguirs number 7 to bring some life back to old paint. Wonder if this might be a route fir this one. Too bad really old cars get badly neglected sometimes.

Did you consider wet sanding to see what that would do?
@WickedAutoDetailing
@WickedAutoDetailing 2 жыл бұрын
We rarely wetsand unless it is on a fresh paint job to level off orange peel. Original OEM paints or any paint you are unfamiliar with carries a large risk when wet sanding. Don’t recommend pulling out sand paper on random classic finds.

It wasnt chemical damage. Most likely was repainted directly over old paint without taking off old paint down to metal, repairing where needed, primer 2 coats (not done either), and then finally painted with 2 coats & clear gloss 2 coats. This was just direct 1 coat paint over lightly sanded old paint...hence the haze because no depth of paint was done.

@@WickedAutoDetailing I need to patch a few of the bottom panels this next year and finally repaint it keeping "T" stripes on side as I replaced them already in 1984. I'm thinking '63 Austin Healey "ice blue" color with modified tiny flecks in lacquer (or) '64-'67 British Leyland BU-43 Aquamarine
