Who takes a Sawzall to a classic car and rips it up the middle? Jim Stabe did the unthinkable when he set out to widen his tiny 1966 MGB British roadster he'd owned for decades. After 17 years of fabricating all the tools and components to build the car, the blazing red Wide MGB emerged as a head-turning work of wide body art with a supercharged 535 horsepower water-methanol injected LT1 Camaro engine boasting 550 foot-pounds of torque riding on C4 Corvette suspension. Nicole discovers all the details above and below the restomod pro touring Wide MGB and takes Jim for a supercharged trip around sunny San Diego.
MORE ABOUT THE WIDE MGB: Jim Stabe's hand-crafted creation is currently offered for sale. Specifications and contact details can be found at jimstabe.wixsite.com/wide-mgb
OCTOBER 2023: The Wide MGB was sold on Bring a Trailer: bringatrailer.com/listing/196...

@@NicoleJohnsonsDetour "WE" LOVE what you do in America - we have a huge love affair with all things American when it comes to custom/muscle cars etc. Jim's creation manages to undo all the worst aspects of classic cars BOTH sides of the pond. I’m an Ozzie who first drove an MGB in ‘63 aged 18 and this is an excellent example of re-engineering a classic car with a vision and along the way Jim has adapted, adopted, fabricated parts, designed and made tools to complete that next process using technology of today but maintaining the simplicity of the original car. He is a delicate balance of those that have vision of the future, think outside the box, challenging situations are met head on, despair is not a word or feeling in his mind, he’s an engineer, toolmaker, craftsman and inventor. I’m also one who will make something when time is not a factor, even though I could go and buy it “off the shelf” and I truly admire the skills of this remarkable man. Have fun driving your one of a kind car Jim and you have my highest respect 👍👍👌👌 Congratulations on a wonderful winning build.

Watched pretty much all of your episodes Nicole, and what I realize is that as much as you are finding these awesome pieces of ingenuity, it is actually the discovery of the amazing guys that created them, that deserves a special acknowledgement. Your show is a time capsule to an era when America was full of these madmen with a sense of humor and the “can do spirit”…which made the country so great. The show is an mixture of Spirit of St Louis…meets Carol Shelby…meets the mad professor from “Back to the Future”… There is an endless repository of creations in our 50 states…inevitably also on the water, underneath it or up in the air. A lot of the creative spirit in America may have grey hair these days..but it still has swagger and a quiet determination that has always been the hallmark of this country. Thanks for bringing them to us while endowing all the episodes with your bouncy, boundless enthusiasm for this “stay crazy” crowd.

Huge congratulations from the UK! MGBs are the stereotypical classic car in the UK and whilst many have succumbed to the dreaded tin worm there are more than enough to let one transmogrify into such a special special! It's one thing to stuff an old car with horsepower but quite another to make a unique creation that is clearly inspired by the original, maintaining it's elegance whilst giving supercars a hard time! I cannot think of any genuine MG enthusiast who could be mad at what Jim has done to an MGB. Exceptional talent, vision and skill. Top class toolmaker and designer too. In my own way on a far lower level, after my own "creation" or breathing life into an MG someone has given up on, although now I've lost count of the times, I shall never tire of the joyous moment when you turn the key or press the button and that dead engine bursts into life. All for the love of it. Clearly Jim experiences that in spades be it his tool making or MGB creation. .

People been sticking small block V8s in MGs for decades. In fact the factory began the trend in 1973 with the MGB GT V8 as far as I know. When a car gets this heavily modified though, it really becomes something else altogether. I love it, but I’m not sure it’s an MG anymore. I think the owner/engineer is right in labelling it a ‘GM ‘rather than an ‘MG’. Coincidentally, the original MG factory V8 was a GM Buick designed engine that the Brits bought the manufacturing rights of from GM.

@@JimStabe may I ask how many ppl asked to buy it off you and how much? I know you probably will never part with it, unless it was stupid money, but hey it might fund a future build of another project. But we all see how much attention to details you have here, and it's your baby of course. I've only restored 60s mustangs, so I feel your love
