My experience with wheelslip is that they start to hop, which can shear the pinion gear off the motor shaft. I've never heard of a nice, smooth peeeeeeeel like in this film. Very interesting. I'm sure that all the Dash 9s have automatic traction control as it adds considerably (like 20%) to the available tractive effort. I once was on a road switcher job that had two GP-40 locomotives. On our way back to the yard, we managed to gather up nearly two miles of cars, totaling around 11,000 tons. We didn't have too far to go, and evidently the dispatcher didn't mind that we were taking awhile lol. Engineer was doing pretty well at immediately backing off one notch whenever we felt wheel slip. Of course the sanders were on the whole time. Traction motors were running in the non-continuous current range. :)

You have to understand the equipment involved. The GE up front has high-adhesion and steerable trucks that perform much better than the EMD units trailing since they have the older EMD trucks before they started doing high-adhesion models. The engineer, in my opinion, throttled too soon for those units. I get they are probably used to working with newer locomotives that do take that kind of stress - especially AC units nowadays, but to do that with such older power behind you is NOT a good idea as you can see. He likely slowed the whole train down when that second unit lost traction as then the first GE probably took all the stress to make up for it. Basically, slow and steady is sometimes better when you don't have all the right stuff. =)
@mapexmac10 жыл бұрын
Excellent analysis @SanteFebuff - I think you nailed it spot on! My thought was "too much throttle too soon", followed with the realization, "where the hell was the sand when you needed it?" Indeed, slow it back down, and throttle-up with FAR more patience. Give those EMDs a chance for cryin' out loud.

I have loved trains since I was little and this thing sounds like music to my ears. This train i believe is a GE Dash 9-44CW which weighs 425,000 pounds and has a power output of 4,400 HP. Hearing that engine roar is really fun to me; and today as an adult the modern diesel locomotive still blows my mind in terms of sheer power and strength. The M1 Abrams Tank weighs 110,000 pounds; this model of train is almost four M1 tanks, absolutely amazing engineering.

Excellent! I recorded a wheel slip but had weeds in the way.
@KM-leons4 жыл бұрын
Wheel slip happens primarily because of lack of friction between the wheels and the rails. When the connecting rod (of a steam loco) makes an upward movement during rotation a lifting effect is created on the wheels and thereby reducing the pressure between the wheels and rail resulting in the wheel spin. This type of slip usually doesn't happen where a crank rod is not directly connected to the wheel such as in the case of diesel or electrical locos. Wheel slip in diesel or electrical engine and carriages happens due to heavy pulling load, smooth wheel and rail surfaces, uneven rail surface and when wheel is slightly lifted due to faulty wheel carriage balancing etc.

As someone with no technical knowledge in this field, I have a question : how can three wheels be aligned on the same bogie and still be able to take turns ?
@scottfw71698 жыл бұрын
The answer involves several things. One of them being the radius of the curve. another is that the wheel tread is not flat but slightly conical - wheels are fixed to axle and do not rotate independently, but distance on inner rail of curve is shorter than outer rail, so having conical tread helps with that. There is a small amount of side play in axle mountings. And some bogies are now designed with somewhat steerable wheelsets, also called a radial truck (truck is US English for bogie). I'd have to look up where on line to find info, but one book source I have and know where it is, is Bulletin 126 of the Central Electric Railfans' Association, pages 118 to 120 cover wheel forces in curves.
@mikado_8 жыл бұрын
Scott FW Thanks for the extensive and documented answer ! I somewhat find those things fascinating for some reason. I'll look further into that. Cheers !

Steam locomotives had a worse time of it, especially the big 10-driver wheels jobs. Meanwhile on little logger engines with 6 drivers, it was not unusual for the center wheel to have no flange, relying on wider wheels and the flanges of the outer two wheels to hold the gauge.

There is something wrong with that SD50, wheel slip system should have cleaned that up. At the carrier I work for we have GP50s that will do that regardless what notch you are in. Worse, it wont trigger a wheel slip light/bell, so if its a trailing unit in the day you have almost no idea that its doing it. One of our old-head shop guys explained to me once exactly what's broke in the electrical cabinet, but that's not my craft. Just write the engine up for runaway wheel slip in all notches.
@FishplateFilms10 жыл бұрын
That's correct, power should've been backed off by the wheel slip detector and sand applied (if available!) , so definitely a relay or fuse problem? Not my department either, but it almost seems like the track is greased as they are really going for it..LOL We had a similar problem last week with a EMD 2300 class on the railway I work for, drivers reported a broken rail, but it turned out to be wheel burns in the track from a trailing unit behaving like this!! It ruined 20 meters of rail which had to be replaced! The train was later rescued by two extra units to help it to the port. Great catch !! Cheers Gregg

It really started to accelerate once that locomotive stopped slipping. Static vs dynamic friction.

Probably didnt want to stall it. Dont know much about locos. Perhaps traction cant put much power at this very slow without sliping or it would overheat so better let to slip ?. Sure the operator is aware of the situation and has evaluated which thing is best for the train.

Why didn't they use the sander or the locomotive brake? Such a spinning at high rpm can damage the traction motors.
