I love this movie. The interesting part of this movie in my mind is the fact that even though it appears as a thriller with an evil villlian going to end the world and a hero struggling to keep that from happening, it all illusion. There was never any point in the movie where the villain was going to win and there was never any point where the hero was going to fail. Everything that happened in the movie had actually already happened, so it was completely determined before the movie even started. Normally, this would kill the tension of the movie, but the deterministic nature of the movie was camouflaged in all the misdirection of the movie with the core concept of hidden information. In fact the algorithm, the McGuffin of the movie, was a key element of the misdirection of this movie. The algorithm never actually mattered because it would never have changed the outcome, but it kept us from looking too closely at what was happening right in front of us. This movie is such a masterpiece of misdirection, and for this reason, I consider this one of the best time travel movies ever made.

Exactly. To add to your point, people misunderstand why Kat was an important part of the plot. Every sequence that the film shows is *the single series of events* that led to the mitigation of “end of play” as Neil put it. Nolan essentially made it so that there were no plot holes or complaints to be had about the plot - it was simply the only reality and unfolding universe in which the good guys won, period. Brilliant

The helicopters used in the battle at the end of the movie are the Boeing CH-47 Chinook, which not only has a "forward and backward" overall look to it, but also has rotors which spin in opposite directions, one going clockwise and the other going counterclockwise.

I’ve got a few good ones I haven’t heard from anyone else. You can pretty much pause this movie on any frame and see notice some detail you didn’t see before. The clock at 7:53 and 13:23 are almost inverted images of each other Around 15:00, the scientist teaches TP about inversion by reversing footage on a camera, foreshadowing the actual techniques used in the film at 20:30, Neil and TP use the inverted bungee jump to ascend, which employees music which accelerates to a climax of silence (which Ludwig Goransson described as a technique used to emphasize music being backwards) which mirrors the moment at 2:16:45 where Sator is pushed off the boat, falling (opposite of the inverted bungie jump) marked by the same sort of silent climax in the music and follows the theme of the whole movie being a palindrome with its timing being around 14 minutes before the end of the run time The conversation between TP and Sir Michael seems to imply that Sir Michael is Ives because Sir Michael is the only character which informs TP that the battle of Stalsk-12 and the opera siege occur at the same time, as well as having knowledge of underground tests. Given Sir Michael’s age and knowledge of the Tenet operation, it is unlikely that this information would be entrusted to anyone beside Neil, Ives, and TP as anyone with knowledge of what happens under Stalsk-12 is meant to be killed. Sir Michael’s attitude towards TP is also similar to that displayed at the end of the Red Room/Blue Room scene when TP decides to invert. the plane that is crashed is a 747, a palindromic number at 35:45 when Neil is touring the freeport, there is a red shipping container that says “Oslo” which could be the container TP and Neil use later, and at 35:50, there is another two white boxes labeled “Oslo” and “Tallinn” Here you can see different Rotas logos for each freeport at 40:44, the unnamed Tenet operative on the plane steals a gold bar; on Sator’s yacht, we see one of Sator’s goons killed for stealing a gold bar at 44:10, there is a red stripe and matching blue stripe on the walls outside the turnstile, as well as red and blue squares and red and blue windows on the doors matching the red and blue rooms that will later be more obvious at the second freeport At 49:10, we get what I think is the best moment of the entire film when TP says “I would rather it be my decision” and Neil says “So would I” speaking of the Neil’s death. On second viewing, this becomes more meaningful. The conversation leading to this moment appears at first to be TP explaining inversion to Neil, but on second viewing it becomes clear that Neil is pretending not to understand and then begins to explain inversion more accurately. Seeing that Neil is now more aware at this point than he lets on, we can realize that Neil could be aware of his upcoming death and wishes that he had more agency. Refering to his final dialogue with TP, we learn that Neil doesn’t actually have agency, that being aware of his death does not give him the ability to change it. Another layer could be the possibility that future TP did plan for Neil, but current TP does not yet have this information. At 1:27:15, we see Neil begin to become angry that TP described his conduct as “standard operating procedure” even though later, he tells TP that “the policy is to suppress” essentially the same idea. It seems that in this case, his anger is because TP lie appears to be the cause of Kat being shot. After TP advocates for saving Kat’s life and explains they can use the turnstile at the Oslo freeport, Neil becomes less angry and supports the idea of saving Kat’s life. This exchange supports the idea that Neil is actually Kat’s son, as, following the theme of suppressing information, future TP wouldn’t have informed Neil of his mom being shot, just like Neil didn’t tell TP he was fighting himself. This information could cause the characters to act differently and the scene reflects these principles. Further evidence for Neil being Kat’s son is the care he gives to Kat while traveling back to Oslo while TP sits by. Finally, at 2:24:10, it’s Neil’s voice we hear as TP watches Kat walk off with her son. This is the first and only time in the film that we would hear a narrator, a technique which would not make sense to employ at the very end unless it is meant to hint at a something deeper. It would make sense that this is Neil narrating as his is technically on screen, just a younger version of himself. At 1:52:45, Neil also knows the date and location of current Sator when Sator finally dies. While it’s possible someone told him, a simpler explanation is that he knows the date because he is Sator and Kat’s son, and that is why he refuses to tell TP and Kat why he knows it. At 1:49:18, Priya says “mission accomplished” to TP. At the end when TP kills Priya, he also says “mission accomplished” At 2:17:35 there is another instance of symmetry where Neil save TP and Ives by dragging them with a car, while Kat kills Sator and drags his body through the water with a boat Referencing the scenes at 28:20 and 1:54:40, the track “BETRAYAL” is playing in both and the lighting, color, and tone of dialogue match perfectly. At the end of the dinner scene, TP tells Kat he could be her second chance at betrayal, and the scene on the Priya’s boat is a way of recalling that message and foreshadowing the successful betrayal of Sator

I knew Kat was always meant to kill Sator when Protagonist said to her that he might just be her second chance at betrayal - as Kat's lover - even though she says she's never betrayed him. This is also how I knew that "Neil" is MAX... When he asks Protagonist if he's going back to London to check on Kat and he lies to him, but Neil (MAX) knows he lied. Which means that, growing up, Max thought that his father, Sator, died of cancer. But he hadn't learned the *truth* about how his father died until he grew up, got his degree in physics, and became a recruit on the TENET mission thanks to Protagonist. Protagonist is the one who told him to change his name to "Neil", because... "Lying is standard operating procedure", and "The policy is to suppress " . How? because Kat's act of "betrayal" turned real. She really *did* become lovers with Protagonist, and he became young Max's (Neil's) father-figure.
@arijitroy9462

It's just a theory. Neil can also know this via the protagonist as he explains to him in the future what he's gonna do, as he does to him about all the other minute details that neil knows.

I had a theorie, that in the Final fight the Entropy of the area had changed. They once said in the movie that if too many objects get reverted it can change the current of time and i think all the reverted Soldiers and Equipment in that Area did exactly that. After the Highway Heist when the protagonist reverts himself to go to the airport we can see the stabwound from himself appear and getting worse the closer he gets to the moment it happened and dissapear once he got stabbed. So even though he is reverted, everything around him, including his stab wound still follows the forward moving entropy. In the final battle though when neil sacrifices himself, from the forward moving time view he is dead before he gets shot and gets "healed" after the injury occures. The exact opposite from what we saw at the airport. Therefore the backward moving entropy is now the natural flow of time and the non inverts are the ones moving against the flow of time.

@@retroderzauberer4020 you’re kind of confusing yourself, I think. Nolan and company thought this all out very well but ultimately, the deaths break the rules. Inverted-you can walk into a gunfight with a non-lethal bullet wound you hadn’t yet suffered but inverted-you could not walk into a gunfight with the death you had not yet suffered. So, that’s when exceptions or additional inversions come into play - like if the bullet that killed Neil was inverted. That would explain dying after the injury , if it was inverted along with him.

When the shock wave hits the helicopter in the final scene Neil is in the helicopter, the shock wave is coming from the explosion in the underground tunnel as another version of Neil is pulling Ives and the protagonist out with the hummer which is also taking place at the exact same time as the Opera Heist where Neil saves the protagonist

Tenet isn't a movie that a person can watch once and then decide if they liked it or not...it requires several viewings and each one will make the film more and more enjoyable as you fall down the rabbit hole and understand more and more. A guy I know watched it once, said it didn't make any sense and was an awful movie and just moved on...such a shame. Most movies give you one or two viewings and then it's just rewatching what you know but Tenet keeps delivering viewing after viewing and really gives you the most bang for your buck (or your time as it were). Brilliant.

I was rewatching tenet and I noticed something that didn’t quite make sense. At around 2:17:36-2:17:45ish there’s a shot in the movie of Neil entering the evacuation shipping containers at the start of the stalsk 12 battle (deployment from red teams perspective). But what version of Neil ever makes it to that point? He starts at the end of the battle moving backwards, switches back to forwards to pull the protagonist and Ives out of the hole, then switches back to backwards to open the door where he dies. There’s no version of him that ever makes it to the beginning of the battle. Am I missing something? One theory could be is that when he was sent to the past by the the protagonist in the future, stalsk 12 was his first mission (where he makes it all the way through), then the opera, then the events of the movie, then stalsk 12 again. But if this was true then Neil would have known that stalsk 12 was where the dead drop was and wouldn’t have had to ask, unless he was pretending not to know or was kept in the dark because it was his first mission from the future protagonist.

Whats crazy is that the one who invented the Algorithm is the female scientist he meets in the beginning. Priya makes reference to her but on the first watch I didn't catch it despite how obvious it is lol. Everyone has a closed loop story in this movie.

It’s not confirmed at all. It bugs me when people hear a rumor or a theory and then present it as fact.

@@westmcgee9320 Priya presents "the scientist" as a female who was working on the Algorithm in the future. BUT ask yourself, who else was actually working on the science behind the Inversion algorithm that was a female scientist, who has no name? Look carefully at whats presented in the film. Nolan doesn't need to confirm anything, the movie speaks for itself.

Tenet will be to the movie industry what 808s & Heartbreak is to hip hop. Not too well received at time of release but will become the biggest influence from then on.

There may be no movie that better rewards multiple viewings than this one. So many small details in multiple scenes that are paid attention to. Blue, red, forward and backward audio cues, and excellent fight choreography are all tip offs that you don't see the first time you watch the movie.

I think the biggest issue I have with Tenet is not that it has any inconsistencies in terms of logic or story but rather that it's simply too mind-boggling of a concept for any director to bring to the big screen in a truly faithful way (which is exactly how Nolan chose to handle it). And that's not to say I'm doubting Christopher Nolan's ability, the man is easily in the top 3 of my favorite movie makers - it's just that the scope of this idea is so demanding of viewers that it fundamentally does not make for good film fodder, especially when executed with as much attention detail as Nolan portrayed here. Tenet is a masterpiece but it's the kind of masterpiece that demands to be enjoyed as an intellectual exercise rather than a casual cinema experience and unfortunately, that might be a bit much for some audiences to bear.

The film is clearly not for them. The film doesnt pretend to be easily-digestible. Thats why the opening scene is the most confusing. You have to suspend belief and enjoy the ride

Love this movie but still can't quite fully understand it. As Neil says: I try not to think about it too much because it just fries my brain! Love the breakdowns though. Especially noticing all of the imagery and artistic flourishes by Nolan. One other thing about this: was Sator maybe based on a certain Eastern European who has been heavily in the news of late? Potentially some similar motivations...

For me that's the actual point of the movie. One entropy reverses logic goes out of the window, so you can't criticize the film being illogical (well you can but then you miss the point). The point is to break though our conventional way of thinking and put us into a space that we are unfamiliar with. Expanding our experience of the world by breaking it's rules. Those who reject the movie are simply too afraid to leave their comfort zone and throw themselves into the paradox that existence ultimately is, as Nolan reminds us again.
