Tested out with my 3060 12gb, 60 fps with everything on ultra, ray tracing ultra too on 1440p and dlss quality Dlss off 30-40 fps No noticeable difference to justify the fps drop

As a 3d artist, what people need to understand about raytracing is that 10 years ago I was talking about frames per hour. To see it playable today is absolutely crazy. And I get people don't want to give up frames for raytracing today, but that doesn't mean raytracing is crap. I like to compare it to the invention of the airplane, the Wright flyer was able to fly for 12 seconds at 10mph , at a time we had trains that crossed the US at 100mph. I bet there were people saying we didn't need airplanes when we had trains. But, you might say, airplanes have specific benefits over trains as they can move over things. Well, raytracing also has advantages like that, we can't yet see today. For example, it can eliminate individual textures for every object. If today you want a wooden table without paint, the same table with paint, the same table weathered from being outside or a metal table, you have to create 4 different textures. With raytracing you can calculate those different textures rather than draw them. So you can calculate the life cycle of the table starting with a wooden table, then someone paints it, and then someone leaves it outdoor in a game where over time the paint starts fading. All without having to create every state of that table. Think of it like making a cartoon vs filming someone. It's A LOT less work. Not to mention you can do far more complex things with it, like making it look FAR more realistic. So no raytracing won't be the holy grail for War Thunder right now, just another step toward the next thing, where it will be worth it.

I only notice a difference in the weather, as well as slightly more defined shadows. The lighting itself seems mostly the same though. It really surprises me how good WarThunder’s lighting is, while still giving incredible FPS even at higher graphics.

Yeah even when I started WT, I already said that one reason it looks so good was that the lighting didn't have that computer graphics feel to it, because usually games overdo lighting with a higher contrast and brighter colors then in the real world

We passed to devs over 4 years ago the request for FSR 2.0 (now re-passed this year again, but requesting FSR 3.1) support to be added to the game so everyone can enjoy some free performance uplift, with a high quality, non-vendor specific upscaller that works on almost all card withing the last 12 years or so (even works on things past the RX 480 and GTX 9xx generations). Now they just make the game even more hard to run with a feature that very few people where asking for in the first place. :/

We passed it 4 years ago, they have yet to implement it in 4 years, so we re-passed it this year. that is not not being consistent, if anything its the opposite, we are STILL requesting the same feature, just a newer version than we did 4 years ago. Raytacing (as far as i know) has not even ever been passes to developers by the community since its a meaningless feature for like 90% of their playerbase, and even the 10% that have GPU;s that are beefy enough to support raytracing, still wont use it actively since it cuts your FPS in like half for almost no visual upgrade over the traditional lighting method already in the game. It was not something the community actually wanted actively or strongly. So the devs are ONCE AGAIN, implementing whatever the heck they want, in this case, a feature that takes an astronomical amount of engine development time, for a feature that almost no one will actively use in everyday gameplay, but are not actively listening to the needs of the community and implementing the tings we want/need for a better general gameplay experience.

What this game needs is a matchmaking queue where the graphical/sound settings are locked for all players equally (even with grass in sight on), that no one can modify one bit, no ulq, gamma... etc, no advantages - no tricks. I use ulq because I feel forced, for me it's competitive-->graphics, I love the graphics of war thunder and always wanted to play properly, but without disadvantages... A ranked/competitive/locked-for-all style queue would be a good addition

I don't get the jazz about graphically good games being called 'old' and 'inferior'. I mean, I barely notice a difference between raytraced WT and normal WT, so why waste all that FPS and risk crashing your game? It also greatly increases the stress and wear on your computer, lessening it's lifetime. Is marginally better reflection and lighting really worth that?

For now it might very well be a waste, but adapting the game to accept raytracing so that when it becomes as good or better than current lighting techniques it can be added is a forward looking mindset for a game that hopefully has at least another decade ahead of it.

Biggest problem with it is the light bleed and the fact the reflections shimmer a lot and often are very blurry even when completely maxed out. In certain situations I found it looks like a god damn Minecraft shader. However when everything works properly it does look amazing

Agreed, the weird lighting during cloudy weather is still the weakest point and they doesn’t seem to try improving it with ray tracing. EDIT: On second thought, they at least started to play with Ray Tracing so hopefully they will learn better how to use it over time. At this point I am more interested in new antialiasing options.

i havent been able to see the advantage of raytracing from the start. It slows down the game, graphics look extremely similar to raster, and the textures in the game are still the same. What would really upgrade war thunder is having better terrain textures, building textures, higher quality destruction and smoke/dust effects. i also think updating and removing any bugs from the sound engine would be time better spent.

Ray tracing isn't like hugely different to me, but the overall improvement in the graphical settings is very nice. Game looks good and seems to run better on dx12 ( for me anyways). Also since this game isn't too input speed dependent, fsr 3.1 would be nice or some frame generation.

@DanielRodriguez-b2q I've yet to find the best balance but all and all it runes well. On wide open maps or maps with a bit of foliage or trees in getting 100-120 fps. Once I got into urban environments or a forest frames drop to around 70. It's playable but a bit of an adjustment. I'll keep messing with it and find the best settings:)

Raytracing isnt necesarily about lighting as in bright daylight. Depends on what kind of raytracing you use. Look at SOTR. Raytraced shadowes only.

Horrible RT comparison. You need to compare the same exact scenes with the same perspectives. There are subtle changes that need to be observed, and you can't really do that when left and right are looking in different directions and one is zoomed in when the other isn't. You go from dark and cloudy with RT off to a sunny day with RT on. Of course the game will look better on a sunny day. So now how much better would the scene have looked where you were taking off with the SU 24 with RT on? Also don't move the camera around too fast because it doesn't really allow you to pick out differences that well. You were doing fine on chapter 3.

I'm a "poor player" and I run my games on 1080p capped at 60fps, since my monitor is fullHD and 60hz (absolutely no reason to increase fps if your monitor cant support it. If any of you do that, you're an idiot lol). I'd try upgrading to a 2k monitor to spot targets better while using a plane in ground battles, but idk.. maybe in the future

DLSS does weird things in warthunder like making MG tracers thicker and ghosting happens. So I don’t like to run it at all

more like it will be sad playing on that setting because you will not see shit comepared to the guys playng on potato setting firing acrossmap thrue all the stuff that renders only for you. :)

eh even people with 4090s are getting less FPS I think most will keep it off just cause of the massive hit in performance

@@DawgIVLife it effects performance but it’s the most realistic form of rendering, it’s personal preference to keep it on or off but if you want the game to look real you gotta incorporate it
