War Thunder just updated, and one of the most anticipated vehicles is none other than the F117 Nighthawk, the very first stealth aircraft in the game. I take it in with some friends and attempt to carpet bomb with it. The nighthawk is kinda a sitting duck, so luck is on our side in this one. as a kid i remember me and my old man sitting on the porch and seeing a nighthawk fly overhead when i was around 12. were in a flight line between two military bases. we get to see when they go out every third week for drills. but that was the only time i saw one that close to the ground. CORE memory.

There is a reason the nighthawk flew at medium to medium high altitudes, at night, and only opened its bay at the last possible second. Your bay blooms your radar cross section from that of a relatively large bird to something that could be mistaken for a 747. Your flat bottom on the Nighthawk doesnt do you any favors either if you point it at the radar.

The problem with stealth airplanes (like Fox-3 missiles, and glide bombs, and self-propelled howitzers, and and and) is that WarThunder just isn’t built for it. These are systems meant to be used at ranges and altitudes of at least two-, maybe even three-digit kilometers, and Ground RB all happens basically within 10km range and under 2000 meters altitude. In daylight. You’re not getting any advantage with stealth or active radar homing missiles or glide bombs in that tiny little bubble.

I mean, they didn't even get the stealth aspect right. These things flew right over the best Russian radars of the early 2000's without ever being picked up. In this game, the 1982 version of the Tunguska can pick this thing up at 15-12km without filtering, bomb bay open or closed. That's not even getting into the IR sig of this in game. It can be locked out, in front aspect, at 7-6km all the time. For reference, most early afterburning jets can't be front aspected 100% at those ranges. This whole plane was designed to reduce it's IR sig, that's why the engines are shortened and why they sit well inside the aircraft, the exhaust gets extensivly cooled before going out, and then the outlet is further designed to flatten and dissipate that heat quickly. In our test, it's more reliable to lock this thing further out in the rear than a mig-21. What.

I like that you got the different paint schemes, the flag one, the gray one. Pretty cool. Just missing the one they did (I think?) in desert camo. Also, I forgot how ridiculous the forward view from the cockpit was in these things. I was born on Holloman AFB and grew up near by, so I literally grew up with this jet. It’s crazy to see how accurate the game is, those tail markings are pretty accurate, they even have the black sheep lol. We also had the German AF for like 25 years, so the tornadoes would be flying around too.

If the did the Stealth right and this plane (and they did not even up that in the game). The nighthawk can only be spotted on Rader when it opens its bomb bay or landing gear, and if turns on it's radar. The in game plane did not have the Stealth added. Just the plane.

The capabilities of "stealth" aircraft are often misunderstood. "Stealth" does not mean invisibility, but rather a reduction in detection range. Air defense radars are installed on the ground so that their detection ranges overlap, meaning that there is no uncovered area between them. However, radars can only detect "stealth" aircraft from a much smaller distance. When the F-117 was shot down in Yugoslavia, the modified radar detected the aircraft only at about 20 km and was only able to lock onto it at 14 km. The radar was installed in complete secrecy along the expected route of arriving American planes, as the US Air Force had become complacent and did not change its flight paths for several days. In other words, the stealth F-117 remains undetected because, due to the reduced detection range of air defense radars, it can fly through an undetected zone between two radars. Therefore, even before the deployment of stealth aircraft, it is necessary to know the exact position of the air defense in order to plan an optimal and safe route. Stealth can no longer ensure undetectability within a certain proximity.

You should be flying at around 8,000m and only open the bomb bay for about 1 second. At that altitude it would require fighter interception to take you guys out.
