Don't understand the construction of your shooting board. Perhaps it's the video, but it looks like the elevated surface that the plane rides against is too thick, and the plane blade would be shaving the guide as well as the workpiece. Otherwise, nice meticulous work. I've always loved working with cherry, it just does everything it is supposed to do.
@FranksWorkbench
@FranksWorkbench 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it's a big 3/4" piece on the top. Needed to make it with what I had (my previous went out of square) and didn't even have time to let the glue dry - hence the thousands of brad nails lol

How many coats of the varnish oil do you put on your projects?
@FranksWorkbench
@FranksWorkbench 2 жыл бұрын
1-2. If the surface prep was good one usually does it, if the surface has grain running out or end grain that wasn't burnished no # of coats will fix the dullness

Looks great. FYI - I have made a couple of cherry pieces (simple stuff) and I have been applying a finish that Chris Becksvoort has uses on his cherry shaker furniture that produces a very nice finish. It's 50% T&T Oil Varnish like you are using and 50% Epifanes Rubbed Effect Clear Satin Varnish (no UV protectors which allows the cherry to darken). You rub it off after an hour and burish in between coats with 4-0 steel wool. It's never disappointed me and provides a durable finish.

Curious if you have tried a black Arkansas stone yet? Looks like yours is the translucent? I’m thinking of trying one out.
@FranksWorkbench
@FranksWorkbench 2 жыл бұрын
Yes I have one and it works exactly the same as the translucent, there is probably a slight difference but it's really splitting hairs at that point, IMO. I don't use the black much bc it's 3" wide and found that with oil stones 2" is actually better (and cheaper).

Beautiful! I'm new to woodworking so I wanted to ask something about chisel technique: what's the rationale for cutting the mortise edge with the bevel edge of the chisel instead of the flat edge in some moments, like at 7:54?

I often use the flat side when working on the edge towards me and the bevel when working the edge away from me. But not always. No rules really, just whichever feels more comfortable

Thanks Frank! I enjoyed the build. I hadn’t ever tried the tenon in support of dado before reading Mike Pekovixh’s first book; the first use went into the first Dutch Tool Chest. It was not as easy (at least to me on first try) at it could have been, but then too I think that I was dealing with a much wider carcass had a vote in the matter. I really think something on the scale you did here is far more appropriate for anyones first attempt and would recommend at least trying it once to all your viewers; especially if you have the place to attempt first on a shop fixture you’re building. As always, I enjoy your content brother and the degree to which you use handtools probably most nearly matches my power to handtool ratio of any YT creator I follow. You are filling an important niche in the creator space and I hope you’re continually encouraged. 👍

@@FranksWorkbench his most recent book “Foundations of Woodworking” builds on the first and is technically more beneficial to me. His first is a practical look at his philosophy and is also really good. They can be read in any order (especially in your case since you’ve got experience in those subjects he covers in the second). The first is “Why and How of Woodworking” and really focuses on getting the most out of shop time. The most beneficial part of his new book to me was his method (a system really) of marking all parts consistently throughout a project; I know I have my methods, but I didn’t have a true system… now I do. You think of a build who’s got many units of work that come together as a greater unit of work and marking can really go a long way in choosing reference edges and faces that will complement operations further down the build plan when they begin interacting with others. He also breaks down in the second book, a more clear eyed approach to timber/cut/grain use in construction to capitalize on form, function, and playing well with others. He really is all about fluent execution of joinery and intertwines projects throughout each chapter. I think the second book will help projects more closely emerge as you intended in your minds eye with more precise execution and his first book will help with productivity and ultimately add to the enjoyment of working in the shop. Usually my go to book recommendations are: -Schwarz’ Anarchist Series; yes, all three. (AWB is free in PDF as a double barrel middle finger to Popular Woodworking since they wouldn’t sell him the rights to his work❤️) -Becksvoort’s “With the Grain” -Walker/Tolpin’s “By Hand & Eye” -Vol III of Charles Hayward’s work: “Joinery” -Peter Galbert’s “Chairmakers Notebook” While the first and third are beneficial to even some beginners if they at least mechanically inclined in the slightest and are beneficial to all woodworkers of every age, stripe, and experience level. If I were to have a young man approach me right now showing genuine interest in beginning hand tool wood working with a foundation in hybrid work, I’d buy them Mike Pekovich’s two books and I think they’d faster make the shift to selling off those powertools to support their desire for timber and handtools 😉. PS: Even if you never build a chair, the Chairmaker’s Notebook is a treasure chest of knowledge and thought starters on improving every facet of ‘making’. Sorry I got long winded 😁 Just my fractured thoughts 👍

@@TheSMEAC I haven't read several of those and just ordered a few, looking forward to reading. For anyone else who happens upon the post the two books I'll add that I've gotten a ton of value from are Working Wood 1&2 Paul Sellers which is amazing, a very practical kind of a "quick start" woodworking but the only downside for a beginner is the projects basically assume all boards come from the store flat and square. and 2. Essential Woodworker Robert Wearing, very solid companion to Paul Sellers' book
