Me and my GF are going to Korea next year just for their food. Korean food in North America is ok but quite a few of them are operated by Chinese people and obviously it's not the same at all... Eating Korean food in Korea is just.. on another level. We still talk about it even after 5 years since we went lol
@nom928 Жыл бұрын
It's so much more amazing even compared to, say, cooking a perfect medium-rare steak at home alone with all the sides you like. I think the communal experience of eating a splurge-y once-a-month meal with friends/family and alcohol (as seen in this video lmao) makes for a great experience. Have you looked up any KBBQ restaurants in your area?
@SeanHendy Жыл бұрын
@@anthonylim2428 It's quite common for ethnic food to be toned down or adjusted as a result of availability of ingredients, also yes, in the UK we sometimes find 'Asian' take aways, that mainly to Chinese, but then also have a Thai menu too. Often Thai food here is pretty close to what I have experienced in Thailand, but I would say the most authentic experience has been there in the country of origin. I am not aware of any Korean food here in the UK, other than a sushi chain that has 'korean spicy chicken' but that's hardly the same.
@SeanHendy Жыл бұрын
@@nom928 not aware of any Korean food here in the UK. Lots and lots of other ethnic food, but Korean isn't. In terms of communal cooking/eating, fondu is something I grew up with, the meat is fried in a central pot with skewers; also in Belgium a restaurant had a hot stone on the table on which the food was cooked by diners; then also there is a raclette, a grill on a table, and I also like the Thai style bbq, which has a hot pot with stock around the outside and a metal covered grill in the middle. I agree, I think communal eating is a great experience, and also often a great way to try many different dishes too.

Less then $240 dollars for all those water aged Hanwoo steaks is a really good deal. Enough water aged steaks to feed 8-10 people for less then $240 dollars seems cheap. A normal regular steak for one person here in the U.S. at a fine dining restaurant is between $35 to $60 dollars.
@robambrose4199 Жыл бұрын
It's a gimmick, as it's sealed in plastic and not being cooked? So, they'd be better off dry aging it, exposed in a fridge instead? But it would cost the restaurant more, as it weighs less, but it concentrates the flavour, and speeds up the aging as it's exposed to the air. Mmmmm,. Water aged sounds silly to me.

If you go to Korea, don't just wander around looking at strange things, make sure to eat as much food as possible. That's the best way to travel Korea. Korea is a country with a very developed dining culture, as there are a lot of people working in the food industry.

Mark makes a good point where he says that, in Korea, beef is usually thin and not thick. Once you build rapport, some restaurateurs will make exceptions and cut thicker cuts. The charcoal is also key for flavor. Finally, it's always amazing to me how the locals get so excited for beef as it's so expensive in Korea. The world identifies Korean cuisine with BBQ (esp galbi), but the locals rarely have it due to high cost. Pro tip: ribeye cap over the tail flap

The KTO's people also get a chance to eat on-the-house as well. Along with your wife I saw 4 of them enjoying the special steaks! Look at $240 for the Hanwoo beef it's a super deal!
