INSANE morning of SPILLWAY FISHING (Stripes, Largemouth, Flathead, and new PB?)

Had a crazy couple mornings this week at the spillway! The big fish in this video was an 11pound 7oz hybrid striped bass, which would be my personal best, but I hooked it in the tail. What do you guys think? Should that still count as a PB? I'm on the fence myself. Thanks for watching!

For sure man! But a warning: Our river has been bottomed out for over a month now. Water is super, super low. No current at all so the stripes will be tricky to find! Hopefully we finally get some rain soon!

Thanks Mike! I wish we had as many as the old days, but apparently the largemouth anglers have convinced them to not stock nearly as many stripes as they used to. A 20lb sea-run used to be kind of common here, now I've only seen one that size in the past 3 years. Thanks again for watching!

Great video man you guys were slaying them, we have a good hybrid lake here we can go out and put near 100lbs in the boat! Obviously I see you keep them and read it, you give them to friends and family so you might already know this maybe you don’t when you go to release these guys you have to spend quite some time holding them upright in the water pulling them back-and-forth allowing water to run through their gills so they can regenerate their energy to swim off if not they’ll belly up and die because they’ve just used all their energy fighting for their life! You have me wanting to get back out there on them haha!

Hey man thanks! And yeah I revive any fish I release unless they are tiny and I got them in real quick, but good looking out! Pretty new to Brandon are and live about 3 minutes from that spot, can’t wait to toss a line. Especially them strippers, used to catch in VA and MD, we called them Rockfish but they were striped bass.

We don't have very many true striped bass like you're used to, we call them sea-runs here, but we have a lot of massive hybrid striped bass which in my opinion fight better than the sea-runs. They are mean as hell. Whenever you see some decent current running get after them! And if you ever see me out there come join me.

Yeah we've got some studs! Low numbers right now but the ones that are left are huge. Jackson, Mississippi, and my friend is a biologist with the state and they're gonna shock it this week to make sure they're not white bass. He says if we suddenly have white bass here its a huge problem for some reason so we will see. I forgot to check its tooth patch on its tongue to know for sure, but I'm checking the next one for sure!

Thanks brother! I use the Black Hole Suzuki special 2 rod, which is only 6.3 ounces at 9'6feet. Amazing rod, can't reccomend black hole enough. Been using the Suzuki special 1 for years and just upgraded to the new suzuki special 2.

@@AikenAngling Dang bud, that is investing in quality right there. I've been curious about some Daiwa rods to see if they can handle hybrids. i'm looking for something longer and lighter.

@@FishingWithAhrenAndMary haha yeah since I'm out there 3-6 days a week casting for an hour or two every morning I've made sure to get the lightest/strongest set-up possible. Just makes heavy casting that often much more enjoyable, and there's less chance of throwing my shoulder out lol. My 5000 size exist and this 9'6 black hole rod are under a pound combined at a total weight of 13.9 ounces. And yeah I love Daiwa and they make great rods but I would avoid the $50 air-d x rod. I've owned 3 and none lasted more than 6 months. Other than that I've never had a problem with Daiwa.

What length are those flukes? 3 or 4 inches? Like your videos keep em coming

I almost always use the zoom fluke jr, which is either 3.5 or 4 inches, I can't remember exactly. But I use those because the hybrids seem to prefer that length to full sized flukes. Although when the true stripers get big they want that larger fluke. We just have more/bigger hybrids here at the moment than true stripes so I stick the fluke jr! And thank you sir! The spillway where the pearl meets the rez is where this video was taken. But there's 4 other reservoirs with dams a bit north of me in our state. And they're the best crappie fishing lakes in the world, commonly referred to as "The Big Four": Sardis lake, Grenada lake, Enid Lake, and Arkabutla. I'm also only about 3 hours away from the gulf coast so I take several trips down there every year! @@AikenAngling heck yeah I envy you brother, maybe one day I can come there maybe we can go fishing, I’ve caught a lot of big stripers and wipers in Florida, in June they run up the St. John’s river to ocala then to Rodman reservoir, love fishing there at the Dam off of 19 Best thing to use there is white with a red head husky jerk or a 3/4 ounce buck tail white, then I put a chartreuse trailer on it, caught many over 16 pounds there.

What lb. line, and what rig do you run when fishing the spillway?

20lb daiwa j-braid x8 for my main line, 50lb mono for my leader, I tie a 1/4oz jig head with a fluke on it to the end of my leader, and I tie a 1oz weight to my leader about 8 inches above my jig just to cast far enough.

I use a 1oz when the water is low like this, 1-1/2oz when the water is over those two walls that stick out. But I only do that at this one spillway, if you're somewhere where you don't need to cast 75 yards you can get away with much lighter.

Hey man, A hybrid striped bass is an artificial species that is a cross between white bass and true striped bass. They do not exist in nature, only produced by the state fisheries to stock them for fishing/ shad control. We have a few true stripes around here but a lot more hybrids. Pound for pund these hybrids fight harder than any other species we have around here. Some people call them "wipers" in the rest of the country. "W" from white bass, "iper" from striper.,

In the ross barnett resevoir/ lower pearl river? I would love for that to be true but my friend and my little brother are biologists for the state and he says we don't have any in this river system, and they shock the water all the time. We do have them in north MS, just not in ross barnett/ the Jackson stretch of the pearl. But if you know of a spot around jackson to catch them please let me know and I'll join you some day!
