My gut says Mittens is tuned to leverage weak pieces for more advantage rather than taking them, which is a tactic that Bots don't use often. That's why it sits there forking pieces without taking until you make a decision about which one you value more, and uses that time to shore up other parts of the board. It's a weirdly psychological choice that will probably get slapped by Stockfish. Edit: like a cat playing with its food

Mittens is not a cat, it's a Flerken. I doubt it's actually some version of Stockfish, it plays more aggressively it seems. Maybe a deep-learning-based bot that was specifically programmed to win games as quickly as possible. After watching some games it seems its prone to random blunders, which makes me think that Mittens uses Monte Carlo Tree Search and wasn't trained enough in self-play, or with exploration coefficient large enough to avoid those blunders. I have a chess-bot project myself where I used AlphaZero-style algorithm to calculate moves, I rewarded it more for winning games faster, and it suspiciously plays in a similar style, but Mittens is stronger.
