These plagues were also used to disprove a different god of Egypt's society: 1. Nile to blood: Hapi, the God of the annual flooding 2. frogs: Heket, Goddess of fertility, water, renewal (had the head of a frog) 3. lice: Geb, the god of the Earth 4. flies: Khepri: God of creation, movement of the Sun and rebirth (had the head of a fly) 5. livestock: Hathor, Goddess of love and protection (had the head of a cow) 6. boils: Isis, God of medicine and peace 7. hail: Nut, Goddess of the sky 8. locust: Seth, God of storms and disorder 9. darkness: Ra, God of the sun 10. first born: Pharaoh, the ultimate power of Egypt "If you're telling me that your gods are real and mine is fake, but my God controls these things, who actually is in power?"

Very nice video and explanations ! I saw a documentary on this as well. Another theory for the death of the first born children was that after all the previous plagues, the food was scarce and they had to pick from old stored food (stored multiple years or months ago). But this food was contaminated by a bacteria. Since the first born were the ones to which the more food was given, they reached higher levels of toxicity and died from a disease caused by the bacteria.

As an average person who just goes about their day and occasionally watching good videos like this: Scientific explanations like this about biblical events along with depictions in the bible always fascinate me in their perplexing similarity and simultaneous contrast from each other. All these things could, and have, happen naturally, yet at the same time such an apocalyptic event just FEELS like something more was going on. It could go either way. I just love how religious tales and actual science can coexist. "Was it god?" Maybe! "Was it simply a natural event" Definitely! But what I adore is the possibility that it could have been BOTH. Everyone always says God works in mysterious ways, whether referring to his methods, his actions, or the motives behind them. It ain't always to see what he's trying to do, or even what he's doing at all! Perhaps someone who created a world like ours wouldn't need to do much to defend its people. Someone like him would probably already know so much about it's ins and outs that when faced with smiting an entire nation to free an enslaved people of worshippers he may not even need to bring down his godly powers. All he'll need to do is feed the algae!

Here is my theory: Moses and Ra-Moses are the same person or brothers. Let us not forget the brother of Moses - Aaron. Egyptian god Ra or A(a)ron Ra lost his power because of 10 "plagues" ( ecological disasters ) delivered by Jahveh and... the rest is the greatest children telephone game ( Chinese whispers ) ever devised.

I’ve heard that it was Amenhotep II. Here are some reasons they listed. He had lots of slaves. He was known for his cruelty, almost as if he had a hardened heart. His letters to an official in Canaan mention his distrust of foreigners and their ‘magicians’. His mummy was covered in marks that might have been from a disease, like the plague of boils. The later part of his reign is completely absent from historical records. Finally, his descendant Akhenaten tried to completely overhaul Egypt’s religion in favor of monotheism. What could have given him reason for that?

I heard another theory explaining the tenth plague (death of the first born) according to this theory it was common practice for the eldest son to sleep on the floor or lowest to the ground. If the other plague were caused by a volcanic eruption, the toxic gases may have swept through the region during the night. These toxic gasses are heavier than air so if it was a calm night the air would have been much more toxic near ground level where the eldest usually slept. The eldest would be killed and the rest would relatively unscathed. This doesn't really explain why the jews were spared though. Maybe they had different traditions when it came to sleeping arrangements, maybe they were mostly segregated to an area that happened to be at a slightly higher elevation or had some other barrier keeping the low laying gasses out or maybe their homes' architecture was different than the Egyptians in a way that kept them safe. The parting of the sea and the reclosing of it can also be explained by volcanic activity. volcanic activity can aggravate fault lines and cause built up stresses to be released. A fault line could have buckled causing the seafloor to drop several feet, as the sea floor dropped it would have created a vacuum, pulling immeasurable amounts of seawater(or lake water, whatever the case may be) towards itself and away from where the jews needed to cross, (very) temporarily drying up the crossing. As the seawater fills the void created by the seafloor dropping, because of momentum more water keeps rushing in until the water level above where the seafloor dropped is actually higher than the rest of the sea, this very quickly tries to correct itself and the sudden outflow of water generates a tsunami which would come crashing down on the previously dry passageway like an unstoppable wall of water. It is really looking like volcanism was the force behind this story. I wonder what the religious ramifications are if it was actually the world under our feet and not the one above our heads that was responsible for freeing the jews from slavery back then.

There's just one tiny little problem with that it was the first born son of everyone in Egypt that would include adults who were the firstborn son of their fathers so technically it could have been a father losing his son and Grandson in the same night or it could have been the father the Son and the grandson in some cases three generations were wiped out in one night because they were the first born sons of their fathers in Egypt

as a jew, this is a big part of our religion:) it’s a well known story of the book of exodus in the torah (not the jewish bible, we don’t use the new testament.) and we even have a whole holiday dedicated to it and our freedom! the holiday is passover and we celebrate over a seder where we read the haggadah to remember the story, and not eat fermented grains for a week! and yes science can explain all of this, but we believe god did this for us to free his people from egypt. whether it was a coincidence through science or magic, we believe god did it, even through logic!

Exactly. People seem to not realize that God can simply operate through logical activities as he does supernatural ones. It is very likely that the scientific explanations here are the correct ones of what happened, but simply through God who allowed this to happen.

Thus, Pharaoh had one whole week in which to take breath; the shortest time possible for the practiced eye to discern whether or not the Sun had made any progress in his return from his southern tour. The Lord again egged on the two brothers, and "frogs came up." Pharaoh's "magicians did so with their enchantments" (Ex. 8. 7). The Sun was still in Aquarius, near, or in its first degrees. As these were a peculiar kind of frogs, being bred in mid-winter, and entering into every apartment of the Egyptians' houses, even into their ovens and kneading troughs, I suspect they may not after all have been an animal production. This legend was probably derived from the Hindu story of Bheki, or the Frog-prince, "which denotes the Sun as it rests upon the water," or just above the horizon, as it always does near the winter solstice, sprawled out as in the act of leaping into the water. Thus, when Moses and Aaron, assisted by Pharaoh, stretched forth their hands, up came Bheki, or the Frog-prince, or the winter Sun, with his hateful progeny, in the form of cold windy weather, which entered into every imaginable nook and corner of the land - into their ovens and kneading troughs. (Cox's Myth., vol. 1, pp. 165-400.)

I've seen many movies of the Exudos story. My favorite is the animated "Prince of Egypt". The "Ten Commandments", with Charleston Heston is a good watch if you can stay awake for 3 hours, and is the most faithful adaptation of the Biblical Story. I didn't like Ridley Scott's version of "Exudos: Gods and Kings", it totally secularized and downplayed the supernatural elements of the story and made Moses look like a mad men.

A few years ago while cruising down the Nile our tour guide told us of some nearby rocks that has ancient drawings and writings about the plagues and disasters. Sure enough, behind some metal fences only a few metres from the Nile a dozen or so boulders have the accounts. This is fact. Look it up on the internet. 19:13 I was raised a Christian and I attended University with the goal of becoming a Christian Minister. While I have since turned from faith and question much of that which I was taught, I will offer a defense for the belief. Let's assume that God IS real and everything, including the laws of nature and physics were His creation. If so, it would only make sense for Him to know that performing a specific act would lead to each sequential "plague". Therefore, God only needed to turn the water into "blood" to kickstart the entirety of the ten plagues. Assuming God IS the creator, He alone would have the knowledge (at the time at least) that one thing would lead to another and so on. It only makes sense that He would kickstart a chain reaction. I submit to you that (again, assuming our belief here) the Bible renders things unto the reader from the perspective of the writer. It stands to reason that those in ancient times would not have knowledge of algae and their potential effects on the local ecosystem. Therefore, the descriptions offered - such as turning the River Nile to blood, would've been rendered as the result of the limitation of the knowledge and understanding of the people at the time. I believe, if we assume God is real as aforementioned, it would only make sense that the Almighty who knows EVERYTHING would "dumb down" his actions and explain them in such a way the people of the time would understand. All that said, if God is real, it only makes sense that He, being in control of Mother Nature, would use a natural chain of reactions. It conserves energy (something God is obviously a proponent of as He rested on the Seventh Day.

I'm a Christian and a history major. I know many archeologists and historians dispute the plagues, but it is possible. As a Christian I hold to faith which does not need evidence. My theory is that the plagues were a precursor/cause of the bronze age collapse. The economic and environmental woes of the plagues could have ignited a chain reaction that resulted in the break down of the bronze age empires. The lack of historical record is not an issue. Many ancient texts are lost or destroyed. Plus the Greeks such as Diodorus reference the plagues in his origin of the Jews.

I could honestly see a rational explanation for these "plagues"; Meteor shower, astronomical event, but not unheard of, and it's not hard to see it happening in the length of history we have. As a result of it, animals scattered all across the land, hence the "frogs swarming egypt", the locusts, etc. all being scared off and running around as a result from the impending shower they likely sensed at some point. And the so called final plague which involved the whole "death of the firstborn" thing, easily could've been any sort of sickness that targeted everybody, as a reminder, the adults grew blisters boils and rashes from an unknown cause, and it's very possible the sickness that affected adults was lethal to children. And to anyone wanting to point out the whole "order the plagues occurred" thing, keep one very important thing in mind- this happened literally THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO, not in the last century or two. Who knows what sort of things were changed or altered based on the history of things, including the easy possibility of one thing being changed through the course of time. Like a game of Telephone, you tell one person one thing, by the end of the 30 something people playing it, they'll likely hear something completely different from what it was. So imagine that literally millions of people later over the span of several thousand years. For all we know the order of the plagues was switched or swapped out at some point, maybe one or two never even existed and were thrown in just to make the "miracles" sound more compelling. I'm not trying to disprove a religion or insult peoples beliefs here, I'm just trying to point out- don't immediately jump to conclusions and assume some flying spaghetti monster is responsible whenever some surprising "miracle/plague" occurs~

@@neyou6940 the answer is simple. Pride held them back. The ancient Egyptians didn’t believe in God, and Christianity wasn’t around at that time either. They already had their pantheon that no matter what God did to show it was wrong, they still held to it, because they didn’t want to change their ways. “The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:23. I may not be the best at explaining it, but the best way is to read in the New Testament especially in the epistles. The answers are there.
