Hawks are very territorial, so you can absolutely expect to see it around. The lean to offers some protection, but the hawk can absolutely fly right through under the roof and will figure that out, Having something lower, hat the chickens can run under but the hawk would have to land to go after them will help. That close encounter was pretty special ;) The opportunity to be that close to nature is one of the joys of homesteading ;)

Sean you have your defence against the hawk in your laying hens. You have at least one black chicken and hawk mistake the black chicken for a crow. Crows and hawks don't get on, so if it thinks it sees a crow the hawk wont bother those chickens. The hawk was properly tempted because you have over 50 chickens, that's breakfast, lunch and dinner all day long. So along with your owl you might try and find a model of a crow and place that near or on the meat birds tractor. Just noticed if you go to 9:38 and scroll through frame by frame I think the hawk did make contact with the chicken but had to drop it because its wing hit the tractor and to save crashing into the ground he let go of the chicken and flew off. It looks like the chick was caught in the hawks left claw. As always thanks for posting.
@TheModernYeoman3 жыл бұрын
It's funny; I was just talking with Holly about this phenomenon today. I really think having the black-feathered chickens (one in each layer flock) has done much to stave off aerial predation. Makes me consider buying at least one or two black-feathered chicken breeds with each new round of layers that I get.

from the short time we could watch the hawk it looked like either a coopers hawk or a sharp shinned hawk....both are very agile fly-guys. unfortunately they are protected so 20 gauge therapy is not permitted. One method you can use if you are willing is put out bird feeders in another part of your property and attract wild birds to the feeder......and the hawk to the wild birds. a full hawk is less likely to go after the meat birds. the other option is to make it so the little bundles of protein can not get out of the tractor while you move it.
@TheModernYeoman3 жыл бұрын
That is a very good idea. We already have a fairly active wild bird feeder in the carport; maybe I can move it slightly so it's more in the open.

Roosters! A rooster will show down or throw down with a hawk to save hens. I've seen roosters fight off predator birds. You need a roo with each pen, or free range roos they will hang close to pen with hens. They will 'call up' hens when danger is near (or food, or time to coop up at night). We have a roo in our run with hens and a roo that free ranges, 2-fer for protection.

After engaging the wheels try just pulling the meat bird tractor along the ground instead of lifting it up with the rope may keep them from escaping outside. Could try putting a shade cloth on t posts inside the electric netting areas to give the hawk less open area to fly into / over and dive to grab adult chickens. Justin Rhodes has a meat shaw for his pastured meat birds to get under at night or if a owl or hawk. It is about 12 +/- inches tall on the under side. Also has guard geese with chickens that deters ariel attacks. It is in a lot of videos last year.

Just came across your channel. Very nice! I found my roosters alerted the girls when predators were present was a great benefit if they had places to hide. They make a long growling noise and the girls will run for cover. My other alerters were crows and blue jays. I fed my crows, starting with one crow and eventually a family. They love dog chow and fridge leftovers. Crows are very protective of their territory and will drive off hawks and even eagles. They also alerted me when foxes come into the yard. I wouldn’t trust the crows with free range chicks, but they are very vocal When something comes into the yard.

Here we have both, guard geese and a large net. We set up a "chicken yard" (30'x30'-coops, goose hut) in the middle of the yard, permanent fence, 8' poles in the corners, 1 in the center at 10', and covered it in net. Put in 2 gates (front and back), and put the electrical nets off the gates so they can be moved around. Anytime there's a predator around, the goose makes a racket and the chickens run under the netted area. So far in 2 years, no casualties. With the fenced areas, we can put in tractors for the grow outs and the geese can still wonder around them. Just throwing another idea out there for ya :) Glad the chickens are safe!

Hello from TN! I believe that your Hawk was a Coopers Hawk. Any Hawk will eat a chicken if the opportunity presents itself. It will be back. You might try that "Scare" tape that you can hang at a different angles or levels. There's bird netting also. A good Rooster is your best bet. He will see just about everything that moves! He will give a warning, and the rest of the chickens pay attention! I have seen my hens lay almost flat on the ground when warned! I don't ever intentionally get White chickens! They are just too easily seen. I would bet that your Rooster warns his hens! Most people don't find it interesting to watch their chicken's behaviors, but I find it fascinating. The best defense is a good offense. GOD bless

Your hawks appears to be a Red-tailed hawk. Idea for your chicken tractor to help keep the chick/young chicken stay inside as you move it. Use the plastic fencing as a shirting around the inside of the tractor. As you pick up the tractor, the fencing blocks the escape routes. My dogs have learned to watch out for birds of prey that are either flying overhead and perched in a tree waiting. I have a 9 yr old Maremma, who has taught a 2 yrs old and 1 yr old Heeler/collie/shepard mix to also watch for the these birds. They've gotten so good, the everything at looks like danger is chased out, except for the ok song type bird, woodpeckers and crows. Ravens are not welcome here, but the dogs don't bother with the crows. My dogs are free ranging around the farmyard, so that three additional sets of eyes watching for danger on the ground and above. So with that, have you thought about a farm/protector dog for your yard and flocks?

dude that was a close call, a goose is a great idea and will be your guard dog infiltrated with the laying crew. glad you did not lose any chickens and did not get hit by that thing,, the speed it came down it would have hurt.

I was surprised that he was willing to get that close to me!

Yes hawks r territorial and isn’t going anywhere..we had moved and I had my lil 3lb dog in the front yard and it tried to get him with me just a short distance away.thank god I was watching and reacted fast enough.the darn thing will sit on my fence and watch for him to come out..wildlife nowadays doesn’t seem to b threatened by humans anymore..that was a close call for that chicken..thank god that bucket was there.I think it helped to save that chicken..

I was thinking the same thing about that bucket; I think it confused the hawk!

the hawk looks at black birds as they are crows that will chase after the hawk

That's what I'm thinking. Glad we have black chickens in both laying flocks.

Oh, one more thing! You are going to lose chickens for nature, so get use to it. Sickness, fox, snakes, hawks, owls, neighbors dogs, coyotes, bears...etc... you will have to pain your dues to nature, its the way of things.

I've only had problems with bird's of prey at our new place then at our old place. We have 1 owl this year that is didn't listen & last year it was a stubborn falcon. Like our old house, I told all the bird's they are all welcome here to get all the snake's & rodents that they want & all the song bird's they want, but can't have the domestic flightless bird's, cat's, baby piglets, baby goat's. They're welcome to nest here, unless they start killing stuff. I know it sounds weird, but it's worked. Told the coyotes in both places, they haven't caused us any issue's, so it's worth a shot. I need to talk to the raccoon, I think it's a problem child. 😊 We've had fly-by diver owls (going after a hen) but not as close as your hawk got. 😲

I am very intrigued by this idea. Did you just say these things while you were walking outside?
@AlleyCat-13 жыл бұрын
@@TheModernYeoman yeah. Like I said, it sounds bizarre (to most), but I'd be walking out somewhere & hear the hawks or owls, etc. & tell them hi & they are welcome to be here, but they weren't allowed to go after .... (list the domestic animal's), but they could have the snakes (as long as they left some good one's for us), they could all the rodents, and sparrows, magpies, etc. They could raise their young. But if they killed they wouldn't be welcome here anymore. I tell their babies the same thing. They were here first, but now we have to share space. Worked at our old place & we had coyote scout's go through our field & never bothered our horse or cow/calf. So I think work's? I did it at my parent's place too as they had a hawk that was bugging their chicken's too, they stopped.

@@AlleyCat-1 Thank you for this; I really appreciate it. I think I will give this a shot next time I'm out and walking around.

@@TheModernYeoman your welcome. I hope it helps. I was also going to suggest that maybe you can put some sort of chain net that'll hang down from the bottom of the tractor, so when you pick it up to move, it'll hang down, but collapse easily when it is put down. In theory anyway. 😊
