Here we take an advasnced look at the upcoming Beechcraft Duke from Black Square and JustFlight!This is a highly detailed simulation including schematics, engine physics modelling and some of the best sounds I've ever heard in a sim.

About leaning for taxi. It fouls the Mags due to rich mixture causing rough running engine. Then you’d have to do a burn off at a certain RPM and lean until temps rise. If you have the A2A Comanche PA24 it will happen in that aircraft. It’s fuel injected so you won’t have to lean the engines until setting cruise power much different than an Carburetors engines.

I m really a big fan of BlackSquare, those aircraft really add a lot to the sim with failures system, everything operative, vor signal degradation (it s very nice to feel when you are about to loose a vor signal) and seeing improvment made on this model with airframe "flexibility" (looking at the wings not as static than the rest of aircraft) I will don't speak about sounds 🥰, I m pretty sure they are worth the price !

All the black square aircraft are miles ahead of anything except maybe A2A but I think the duke is the winner. Once you fly black square everything else seems like a toy in comparison.

Great review. However, those poor engines deserved loved during the climb 😢Common piston twin climb sequence is "when height is safe for operations, reduce engine power and rpm to a set value". If i take the PA31-350, which has similar-ish engines, the climb power is achived with the following : 35in.hg / 2500 rpm / Rich of Max TIT by - 100°F (-40°C). Please give the TSIO-541 some love, they are VERY fragile engines !

Brilliant. Well done. Black Square should put you on the payroll. I'm sold. I had never heard of Black Square before the analog Caravan a couple years ago. Now they're on the level of PMDG and A2A, and more prolific to boot.

Great looking SIM. We had the Duke in FSX and P3d and it set the bar back then. Just a caution re SIM update 15 next week. MS are altering the aerodynamics and ground handling so id like to see a review with update 15 installed. I hope they don't mess thing up?

My home airport is at 5,500ft MSL so we have to lean our mixture for taxi and take off otherwise we risk spark plug fouling amongst other things.

I really appreciate these in-depth introductions and reviews. To be honest, this aircraft was not at all on my purchase radar. I've been really enjoying the FSR500 since I picked it up, although sadly I haven't had much time to fly over the last couple of months. This video gave me flashbacks to the Milviz C310R, which I thought was fabulous. I've been flying turbines lately (the Kodiak and the FSR500) and have found that fun, so would probably lean toward the Turbine Duke (despite what @Rhinozherous pointed out about reviewers seeming to favor the piston Duke).

Perfection is finally achieved. Perfection has a name: Black Square. Absolute next-level flying, nothing in the GA sector is comparable and comes closes to this depth of simulation, system failures, electric failures, engine simulation and outstanding visuals. Oh and we all know what is really annoying and expensive in real-life (mechanical or electric failures) is pure entertainment and a thrill in flight simulation, keeping a bird with more and more failing systems in the air while trying to get to the nearest airfield. An interesting amount of failures when setting the chance high enough make every flight unique and unforeseeable. The sound quality is outstanding, the best sounding plane ever so far. Even the loading of the capacitors when switching on the strobe lights can be heard. The best detail about the piston version ist the fully functional EDM700 instrument with full leaning simulation. No one ever has simulated an EDM760 but only added a simplified and dumbed-down version of that instrument. Only with Black Square this instrument is fully implemented.

Nah its not perfect. It's amazing but there is even more they could do. There is no walk around. No airframe failures. It doesn't simulate individual cylinder combustion/failure like the A2A Comanche. Really good never the less, I like BlackSquare planes.

There may no individual cylinder failures - but there are 120 other possible failures ;) All other aircraft literally bore you to death with their simpleness (does this word even exist *gg) and every flight is always the same.... every flight is always the same.... every flight is always the same.... every flight is always the same going from A to B with nothing that really matters, nothing on the instrument panel to take care of, and nothing interesting will ever happen. Nothing. All systems redlined - and nothing will happen. Engine overheats - it just stays in the red area and nothing is going to happen for the next 99999 hours because no failures whatsoever are programed in the code lines. The Black Square planes are the complete opposite of that, if you set the failure rate high enough (maybe 512x for typical 30 minutes to one hour flights) you will end up with at least five or six failed systems. This can be everything from the lights on the instrument board failing to gear not going down or single radio stack panels failing. One time I heard a bang and the engine power went down to I think it was about 200hp or so - and the failure list (shown as an optional menu in that weather radar) showed an exploded turbo. One day a minute before landing the instrument panel lights failed and I had to use the flashlight to see the VOR directing to the airport for the last five minutes. Some day you will get fuel leaks and the imbalance of these tanks is really nasty especially when one of these is full and the other one empty after ten minutes, or the spark plugs are grounded and the engine power goes up and down. So many fascinating stuff going on there, so many awesome interesting things can happen when choosing Black Square. The best most exciting flights I ever had was always with the Black Square Bonanza or Baron. And soon another Black Square masterpiece will be welcomed in the hangar. By the way what happens if a single cylinder fails? Just loosing some engine power? I have never flown the Comanche.

@@juliashenandoah3965 There are a number of planes I fly in the sim that will have engine failures if you just keep it redlined. It's not just a BlackSquare feature. As for a cylinder failure on the Comanche. Loss of power. You can hear the engine running rough. And the cockpit instruments will shake (quite violently if you give it lots of throttle). I highly recommend it to you. Sounds like the sort of plane you would like. Lots to keep you busy mid flight, and plenty of failure options. Also it has a walk around and airframe failures.

@@juliashenandoah3965 Fly the Comanche. I literally did a walk around and was manipulating the Aileron and every time it into the down position it would squeak and pop. I was like wtf and kept moving it up and down messing with it and finally I heard a really loud bang and it stuck. The linkages literally froze and broke on the left aileron. Black square has a nice plane and I will probably buy it because I want a fast little twin GA. But the Comanche will always be my Go To for it's realism and modeling. You literally get Cylinder wear. I had an oil tube finally blow out and drain the oil which then caused the prop to run away because the prop governor didn't work and went full fine. Which then caused the engine to overspeed. Between the Lack of Oil and overspeed it destroyed itself. The A2A comanche also simulates water in the fuel tanks if you don't put the caps back on. It also will destroy its engine if you leave very dirty oil in it and let it sit. Like game closed with dirty acidic oil in it. It's quite remarkable actually.

Super excited about the Dukes! Question: there was a limitation with the Bonanza and the Baron (both Blacksquare and Asobo) where you couldn't move your pilot view high enough (for me at least), making it a bit hard to see the runway over the glareshield. The Duke has a very similar cockpit to those. Does the Duke have this same limitation?

It's not the turbocharging that makes the manifold pressure relevant, it's the fact that the engines have constant speed props. Non-turbocharged engines with constant speed props will also use manifold pressure as a power output indication.

They do work. It has a legacy autopilot system though so you use attitude pitch for vertical speed as opposed to setting a VS. It can be tricky if you don't know the system but once you figure it out, works like a charm

I think these are wildly cheap when you consider what you're getting. FSX addons used to be more expensive for a joke of a simulation compared to todays addons. I'm more than happy to help a one-man team create the addons of my dreams a few years ago.

The developers are getting more and more greedy, prices just keep going up. Eventually the hobby will become out of reach for most people. I understand the level of depth but most users will try those failures and features a few times then will revert to a reliable option. We keep chasing after the next shiny object and then look for the next one

If you aren’t willing to pay for the depth offered, there are other cheaper (and worse) options on the market.. but this is a high end addon, which is not supposed to be cheap (and can’t be, due to how expensive it is to develop).

@@jpmallard Just some balance, the devs aren't getting greedier. They are setting a price that is fair given the quality of the add-on. Not sure how the Fenix A320 is deemed much cheaper. It's not at all. The Duke, from the Just Flight website will be priced at £33.99/€42.95/$47.99. With a cheaper option available for those who want to pick up both aircraft by way of a bundle deal. Last time we looked the A320 was £49.99. Worth it I will say but obviously not much cheaper than the Duke. Hope that helps.

It says “full open” in the check list, which is common on regulated turbo pistons.

@@simonpick2690 understanding airmanship is a different matter. Applying the throttle in that excessive rate induced slight overboost of engines and overspeed of propellers. This specific serial numbers of aircraft (newer engines) have takeoff power and max continuous map at 41.5, that sad you can fly it all day long at that power, but is that what you want to do? The same apply in this video to not carrying about Vmc or cyl. temps and leaving it cowls open the whole time. Pushing the plane from 3000ft/min to 1000ft/min in 1 second is a vomit situation, perhaps exceeding structural possibilities of the airframe.
